# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Newnham? Don't Start It

With that tank still carrying the fuel and the motor not yet turned over, almost every job requires only a drain, so keep your engine off. That result is decided in the minutes immediately after filling up, rather than by the amount that was put in. Throughout Newnham and the remainder of Gloucestershire, Petrol in Diesel drains the car and flushes it where it is, whether by a roadside, on a drive or at a forecourt.

We can explain what the next stage will be. Phone — it happens before everything else.

## What now? Petrol in a diesel, in order

- Give a petrol motor diesel and it will typically fail to run at all, so the person stops there and so does the harm. Give a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it ticks over, it drives off — fine for a few miles. Most people have that muddled, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So never crank it. And if started, don't believe it: that fuel system is wearing as you drive.

- Leave your ignition alone also. Diesel does two roles: it burns, and before it burns it protects that high-pressure pump and those injectors. Petrol manages the first and not the second. Turning your ignition on is commonly all it takes to prime that system, which moves that petrol out of your tank and into exactly those components.

- Never put diesel on top to water down it. A diesel fuel system won't handle petrol by percentage the way that advice suggests, and topping up clears nothing — it just gives you a larger tank of the same blend. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is just petrol.

- A motor that has not moved is the simplest one to deal with, and so remain where you are if you reasonably can. Pulled up on the verge on Severn Street? Hazards on, then keep the vehicle there. An odd location works for us better than a started motor.

- Before you call, gather your whereabouts. Anything next to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode beginning GL14 1 — that is what decides whether our van arrives or circles.

- Three details determine the full job: the stuff you tipped in, the ballpark measure of it, plus if anything has been going since. The line is 0333 366 0103.

## Pump-side draining for petrol in a diesel

A big part of the work gets finished at a forecourt, since that's where it often kicks off.

Still at Texaco? Then that's typically where it takes place. Station forecourts are normal for us, with the agreement of the owner.

Nowhere else other than a forecourt can it be stopped with the motor still unrun.

Fuel drawn out of that tank and through the filter, all the way to your high-pressure pump, is what occurs when the motor is started and the vehicle is moved to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes your filter and the lines along with that tank. That is still not a disaster, and we sort it out where the vehicle stands. What determines it is whether the ignition was turned in the seconds after the receipt was read.

Attendants will usually pitch in pushing it away from the pump, which lets the next customer get by. Accept the offer.

Moving it four bays doesn't merit cranking it.

How much fuel the pump has sucked is what we're truly asking — not how long ago any of that was. So the call our technicians hope for goes like this: diesel Renault Megane, a few litres of unleaded, a couple of miles done, now switched off at Tesco.

## Service near Newnham

Ruddle, Grange Village, Broadoak, Bullo, Elton — each of these on our journeys that bring us over to Newnham as well, a coastal village.

We still come. The names above are merely the closest neighbours, and a page is there for the majority of towns around Gloucestershire, so an absence from the list isn't an absence from our coverage.

Near the boundary, or anywhere a satnav struggles with? Phone and ask rather than guessing.

The patch this page covers sits on our map.

Your vehicle does not need to travel to us. We operate over all of that — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

You will be urged to shift the car out of the gateway and deal with it later. Please don't. On the zig-zags outside Newnham St Peter's Church of England Primary School, a misfilled Audi A4 running on diesel is in the way, and that's all it is. Start it three more times being helpful and you have turned a tank into a fuel system: every start primes the fuel lines, every prime drags more petrol through the fuel filter toward the pump. Let them complain. Phone.

## Newnham: broken down where you stopped

The opportunity to pull over somewhere suitable does not come to everybody.

Hazards flashing at a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge of High Street because you worked it out after setting off — we take that call regularly enough that it's the usual kind.

Clear of the car while it's not safe to sit in it, with it if it is.

It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that's the problem: start it up to reach somewhere handier and that mix goes further into your fuel system with every mile covered.

We'll send our van to a tricky place without any fuss, and for the vehicle that is far better than pressing on.

## A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?

This is where the M5 comes into it — under 10 miles away from Newnham.

A drop in power, a rough idle, smoke: those are the symptoms when they come, instead of a neat stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong at all.

Pull off at the first safe exit, turn off, and never start the car to move it.

Assume the worst of that on a long run. Anything near the under 10 miles to the nearest city, and the contamination has been through the filter, through your pump, through the injectors. Mention it when you ring. What our technicians bring differs.

Here is the entire mechanism. Diesel needs enough body to seal the fine clearances it goes through, and petrol takes that away. That's it. Which explains the normal Newnham Peace Garden call — a diesel Mercedes E-Class, out there without complaint and back down on power, uneven at idle, maybe a bit of smoke. Injection systems work hydraulically as well as chemically, so the fuel has to hold pressure and not just burn; thinned, it bleeds past those tolerances instead of building, and delivery comes weaker, later, less even than your engine was built about. Not a failing motor, though. Fuel that has stopped acting like diesel. Put that right and it stops.

## Newnham itself

Newnham is a village in Gloucestershire, situated near the coast and approximately 9.7 miles from Gloucester. Newnham sits at an elevation of 33 metres, with its terraced housing reflecting the local architectural style. Newnham is close to nearby places such as Ruddle, Grange Village, and Broadoak, and is located within the South West region of England.

## Once our technicians reach you in Newnham: what follows

- We establish what was put in, how much, and whether the motor has run. The responses shape the work, which is why we ask before giving a price.

- Away goes the tainted fuel.

- What is left in the system shouldn't be what caused the issue, so the lines get rinsed and the fuel filter cleared.

- Our technicians pour fresh diesel in and prime the fuel system.

- The motor is turned on and tested to be sure it runs properly on fresh diesel.

Your car is then ready for you to drive away.

There is no need to go to a garage at any point, since the work is all done where the car is, and when it's noticed early, long-term damage is very rare.

## A separate matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Newnham

If what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the opening step is unchanged — do not crank it — yet this fault isn't.

Petrol weakens the diesel and takes away the protection the fuel system relies on.

Corrosion and build-up are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, because AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Our engineers deal with both, and AdBlue removal around Newnham has its own page with the full story — including why it's usually the more serious of the two.

Petrol in a diesel does its harm as a ratio, which is the reason our technicians ask at all: the same few litres waiting in an almost empty tank make a far stronger mixture than they would in a full one. And petrol is rated on how well it resists igniting under pressure — the opposite of what a diesel needs — so a stronger blend rattles more, smokes more, goes flatter. None of which means you need an answer ready. Almost no one knows how full your tank was in a vehicle picked up two days ago, and our engineers work that out on site. Do call the hire or company firm first, though: some agreements want them to sign off the work, and that's far faster settled before than after. Then call us about the Peugeot 208 near Newnham Community Library.

## What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost in Newnham

What moves the figure is set out below, since the job is not one job and our engineers can't honestly put a single price on this page.

- Whether the motor has been run or driven. This is the big one.

- How much of the wrong fuel went in, weighed against how much your tank takes.

- The sort of liquid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where is it? And can a technician get to it and work there sensibly?

Tell us the vehicle, the quantity and whether it has run, and you will get a firm answer rather than a range.

Car at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is good for that.

Your filter, the fuel lines, the pump and its rail: that's where the mixture is once a diesel has run, and it doesn't come back out with that tank contents. So that tank is not where most of the damage waits by this point, and a diesel Skoda Superb that made it by Saint Peter's Church needs the circuit cleared instead of drained.

## Newnham motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

## Fuel drains on a Newnham petrol station forecourt

Yes, and it is where a large portion of this work happens.

We attend EG on the move and the other forecourts nearby regularly, with the owner's consent — tell us which one you're at when you ring and we'll tell you if we can work there.

## A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Litres aren't the yardstick. Ratio is, and a lot more than either, it matters if anything has been run.

Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that blend been sucked right through, or has it not?

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the vehicle

Turn off somewhere sensible, then keep it that way after you stop.

Driving takes the problem along — out of your tank, into your pump and injectors. People fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one genuinely useful thing left to you isn't restarting the car.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

No. Carried out properly, emptying and rinsing is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it.

A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a separate problem and it does not put back what petrol has weakened.

Afterwards? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to put up with the stuff.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

You do not need one. The car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to take it to a franchised dealer.

## Still with the car?

The motor stays off.

If you have already driven it, stop somewhere sensible, turn it off then leave it off.

Cold and stationary, a car is in the best place available — and people fear this much more than the recovery rate warrants.

Emptying misfuelled vehicles, Newnham and the rest of Gloucestershire, wherever they are. Kerbside. Forecourt. Home.
