# Newnham Murren: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Don't turn on the engine. If the petrol is still sitting in your tank and your engine has not been started, a tank drain is nearly always all it takes — and that is determined in the next few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled cars where they are, all over Newnham Murren and the remainder of Oxfordshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive.

Call us and our team shall explain what happens after that before you do much else.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to try first

- Never crank it. Started anyway? Then never depend on it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle generally can't run, so the motorist stops and the damage ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It drives off normally, for several miles. Motorists get that backwards. It is not all right — that fuel system is wearing every mile you do.

- Leave your ignition off as well. Diesel does two jobs: it ignites, and before it ignites it protects your high-pressure pump and the injectors. Petrol does the first but not the second. Switching the ignition on is commonly enough to prime that system, which carries that petrol out of your tank and into exactly those components.

- That advice supposes a diesel fuel system accepts petrol by percentage. It does not. Pour diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you get is a larger tank of the same mix. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.

- A car that hasn't moved is the simplest one to deal with, so remain where you are if you sensibly can. Stopped on the verge on Old Reading Road? Hazards on, and leave it there. A tricky place suits us better than a started engine.

- A van showing up instead of circling rests on two things: a postcode that starts OX10 8, and whatever is next to you with a sign on it. Keep both ready before you dial.

- Ring 0333 366 0103. Say what got in, about how much, and whether the motor has started. Those three replies shape the whole job.

## Forecourt draining for petrol in a diesel

It begins at a forecourt, mostly. Regularly the work finishes at one as well.

We operate on garage forecourts all the time, with the owner's agreement, and so if you're still at Esso that is normally where the drain gets done.

Before the motor has run — the forecourt is the one setting this is spotted.

The few seconds between checking your receipt and going for the keys determine how much needs cleaning. Anywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — your car was started and driven to get there, so fuel was sucked from your tank, through the filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means the fuel lines and your filter require flushing as well as the tank. It is not a disaster, and our engineers can still sort it out where the vehicle sits.

The attendants will usually help you roll the vehicle away from the pump so the next customer can get by. That is worth doing.

Starting the car just to roll four car lengths is not.

## Can our technicians serve your side of Newnham Murren?

Crowmarsh Gifford, Wallingford, Winterbrook, Mongewell, Preston Crowmarsh — each of these on the rounds that carry us over to Newnham Murren as well, a residential suburb.

If yours isn't on this list it does not mean we never come — there are dedicated pages for the majority of towns around Oxfordshire, and the ones mentioned above are simply the nearest neighbours.

Ring us to enquire rather than guessing — county lines particularly, and anywhere a satnav might misread.

Use our map for the area included on this page.

Roadside, forecourt, private drive, car park: every bit of it is ground our engineers serve, and none of that needs your car to come to us.

Nothing warns you, as from behind the wheel there's nothing to be warned about. Your diesel Skoda Octavia will have seemed completely usual on the way back from Crowmarsh Gifford Church of England School, and they all do — which is the catch with petrol in a diesel and not the reverse. Diesel in a petrol car generally refuses to run, stopping the motorist and stopping the wear with them. Petrol in a diesel fires up, ticks over, pulls away as though nothing had happened, and all the while the pump works without the lubrication its fuel is meant to supply. Tell us roughly how far, and how hard. The harder matters more.

## Stranded at the kerbside in Newnham Murren

Some drivers get no sensible place to pull over whatsoever.

Set off, then noticed? Landed by the verge on Newnham Green, or parked in some lay-by with the hazards going? That is a common call here. Not a rare one.

Safe right there? Remain with it. Not safe? Get out and clear of it.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls that mix further into your fuel system — and oblige it usually will, which is why the motor doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere better.

A technician coming to a tricky location is no bother for us, and it is far better for your car than carrying on.

Three replies settle most of the work: what got in, roughly how much, and whether the motor has run since. We ask for them when we get to your car in the car park at The Bell. Next the polluted mixture comes out of the tank, the fuel lines are rinsed, and where your BMW 3 Series has a replaceable filter, it comes off. After fresh diesel is in and the system bled, we start it and make sure it runs properly before you pull away.

## A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

Your M40 is the one which counts here, and it sits under 10 miles from Newnham Murren.

A drop in power, a rough idle, some smoke: those are the symptoms when they come, rather than a neat stop — and a misfuelled diesel will often get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong at all.

Come off at the next sensible junction, switch off, and do not start the vehicle to move it.

On a longer drive — anything near the under 15 miles to the closest city — take it the mixture has been through your filter, your pump and the fuel injectors, and mention it when you phone. It affects what we bring.

Normal on the way out, sluggish on the way back. If that's how that trip to Crowmarsh Recreation Ground went, your tank is where to look. Petrol weakens diesel, and thinner fuel leaks past the tightly fitted parts that are meant to build injection pressure — so the farther the Peugeot 308 went, the less well it held that pressure. Pull in somewhere safe, switch off and phone us.

## About Newnham Murren

Newnham Murren is a suburban area in Oxfordshire, situated on the banks of the River Thames at an elevation of around 50 metres. Newnham Murren lies near the town of Wallingford and the village of Crowmarsh Gifford, with the city of Oxford approximately 12 miles to the north. Newnham Murren has a population of around 1329 people, predominantly living in detached houses. Newnham Murren is also close to the village of Winterbrook, and is within commuting distance of London, which is about 43 miles to the east.

## What our engineers do when we get to you around Newnham Murren

- Three things get established before any price — the fuel that went in, the amount, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.

- The contaminated fuel is pulled from that tank.

- What is remaining in your system shouldn't be what created the problem, so the lines get rinsed and the fuel filter cleared.

- We put clean diesel in and bleed the fuel system.

- When it's fired up, we check it runs properly on new diesel.

That has your car ready to pull away.

Everything is done where the vehicle is, so it never has to be taken to a garage, and when it has been caught early, permanent damage is very uncommon.

Pulled off the forecourt, read the receipt, and left your diesel Audi A4 up near Crowmarsh Village Hall a couple of hundred yards later? That's about as well as this goes once the motor has turned. Ring us then leave it off. The short hop genuinely helps, but it was still a start and a drive, so diluted fuel has got to the filter and the pump — which is why our technicians purge your lines instead of only clearing that tank.

## Newnham Murren AdBlue removal is a separate problem

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first instruction is unchanged — your motor stays off — while this fault beneath it's a distinct one altogether.

The protection a fuel system relies on gets stripped away by petrol, which weakens the diesel.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with the diesel and you get rust instead, plus residue.

Often the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the details lives on its own Newnham Murren page. Both are ours to handle.

## Newnham Murren prices for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

One number would not be fair here, as this is not one job. These are the things that shift it:

- Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.

- Wrong fuel in, against what the tank takes — that proportion.

- Whether it's unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where is it? And can a technician get to it and work there safely?

A straight answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: the car, the amount, and whether it has run.

If it's not time-critical — your car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Someone sure of themselves will tell you to drain the vehicle and put clean diesel in. Half true, that. Try it on a diesel Vauxhall Astra close to Wallingford Rowing Club and the motor will start — which is exactly why it sounds like sense. Here's the trouble: there's petrol left in the filter and the feed lines, and the first thing the motor does is suck it back through your pump a second time. Emptying a tank achieves nothing about fuel that already left your tank. Phone us. Your circuit gets purged, your filter comes off where there's one worth removing, and that is what separates a fixed motor from one that only starts.

## Questions our engineers get about petrol in diesel in Newnham Murren

## Fuel drains on a Newnham Murren petrol station forecourt

Yes — forecourts are where a fair portion of this takes place.

Tell us which one you are at when you phone and we'll tell you if our technicians can work there. With the owner's agreement our technicians work at BP and the other forecourts locally regularly.

## Is there a sensible quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Whether the motor has run matters far more, though the proportion counts too, rather than the litres.

An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate scenarios, of course. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether the system has had that mixture drawn through it.

## I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Switch off somewhere sensible, then keep it that way after you stop.

Driving is what takes the problem from the tank into your pump and injectors — but it's fixable a lot more frequently than drivers fear, and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart the vehicle.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A drain and flush carried out correctly isn't a change and doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty.

Another reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one.

## Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

No. It belongs to a different fault from a different era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind puts back.

Your tank still has petrol in it after that, and the pump still has to live with it.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?

Wherever the car is, our engineers drain and clean it there, so a trip to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

## Still with your car?

Shut off is the way the car remains.

Already driven it? Then pull in somewhere sensible, switch off, then let it remain that way.

Cold, still, going nowhere: that's the best place to be in. Drivers fear this a lot more than they need to.

Draining misfuelled vehicles, Newnham Murren and the rest of Oxfordshire, wherever they are. Kerbside. Forecourt. Home.
