# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in North Barrwood? Don't Start It

If you have not fired up the engine as yet, don't. A fuel drain and nothing more is nearly always what a vehicle needs while the fuel is still in your tank and your engine has not turned over, which is why it's the following few minutes that count, not how much got in. Petrol in Diesel comes to the car wherever it has come to rest in North Barrwood or the remainder of North Lanarkshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, and drains and cleans it there.

Phone before everything else begins, so you'll know what comes next.

## Your next five minutes: petrol in a diesel

- Give a petrol engine diesel and it will typically fail to run at all, and so the driver stops there and so does the wear. Give a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it ticks over, it moves off — fine enough for a few miles. Motorists have that backwards, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So never fire it up. And having started, never trust it: the fuel system is wearing as you drive.

- Two things, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps that injection pump and injectors greased. Petrol only manages the one. Which is why the ignition remains off as well — flick it on and you often prime your system, and that's petrol leaving the tank for exactly those parts.

- Topping up clears nothing. It hands you a larger tank of the same mixture, because a diesel fuel system does not tolerate petrol by percentage as that guidance suggests — so do not tip diesel on top to thin it. Grade is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.

- We would sooner come to a tricky location than have it started — so if you reasonably can, stay put. Nothing is simpler to handle than a car that has not moved. On the verge on Ladeside Drive, that means hazards on then leave it.

- Check where you are before calling. A postcode that starts G65 0, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise our van circles rather than showing up.

- Call 0333 366 0103. Anticipate three questions — what went in, about how many litres, and whether the motor has been run. Your replies determine all that follows.

The high-pressure pump spent that morning drive running on a fuel that had given up a great deal of the protection it is designed around. Diesel protects that pump, and the injectors with it, before any of your fuel burns; petrol does the burning and none of the oiling. So imagine a diesel Volkswagen Golf, filled at quarter past eight, taken in to work, and left sitting outside Croy until it dawns on you around eleven. Three hours of sitting have altered nothing about it. The couple of miles before that altered a lot, which is why the question our engineers put to you is about distance not time. Ring us. Leave it precisely where it sits.

## On a forecourt: removing petrol from the diesel

A good chunk of the job is finished at a pump, as that is where it mostly kicks off.

If you're still on the forecourt at Shell, that's normally where the drain happens — our technicians work on station forecourts all the time, with the site's permission.

At a forecourt, the mistake gets spotted with your engine never run, and nowhere else manages it.

Our engineers can still deal with it where it is, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, the car has been fired up and moved there, and that drew fuel through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure pump, right from the tank. None of that is a calamity, but the flush then has to go past the tank to the lines and your filter, and the few seconds between checking your receipt and reaching for the keys are what decide that.

The attendants will generally happily roll the vehicle away from the petrol pump so the next driver can get by. That's worth doing.

Shifting the car four bays doesn't justify firing it.

Petrol in your Renault Clio, and it takes diesel? Shopping in your boot, you at Co-op Food, somewhere in North Barrwood? Then call us, and leave the engine out of it — not even to leave the spot. A technician comes to you. Tank drained, fuel lines rinsed, new diesel in, and home you go. Easy throttle over a mile uses very little, and so these are often the easy cases.

## Areas we serve in North Barrwood

North Barrwood is a residential suburb, and we get out to the town and to anywhere near it on the usual rounds: Barrwood, Kilsyth, South Barrwood, Highland Park and Balmalloch.

Not on this list? That means nothing. The names above are just the closest few, and most locations around North Lanarkshire have a page of their own elsewhere on this site.

Call us and ask rather than presuming, particularly if you are on a boundary or anywhere the satnav can't find.

That map is the ground this page covers.

Your vehicle doesn't need to travel to us. We work over all of that — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

## Stuck by the kerb anywhere in North Barrwood?

The opportunity to pull in anywhere sensible doesn't come to everybody.

Hazards going in a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge of Bankwood Drive since you noticed after setting off — we take that call often enough that it is the normal kind.

Whether you remain beside the car or move away from it depends on whether staying nearby feels sensible.

Never fire it up to get to a better place. It'll go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging draws that mixture deeper into the system.

However inconvenient the location, it is no trouble for us to get to it, and that's a lot better for your car than carrying on.

Never risk it. The trip home from the pub in the village is entirely possible, which is exactly the issue — a diluted tank doesn't stop a diesel starting or pulling away, it just wears down the parts your fuel is meant to protect. Phone us, and let the Nissan Qashqai stay where it is.

## Some miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?

This is where your M80 comes in, under 3 miles from North Barrwood.

A wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong, and the symptoms when they appear are normally lost power, a rough idle and some smoke rather than a tidy stop.

The next sensible exit is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone.

It alters what our engineers bring, and so mention it when you phone: on a longer run — anything approaching the under 15 miles to the closest city — assume the mixture has been through the filter, your pump and the injectors.

## Where is North Barrwood?

North Barrwood is a suburban area situated on the riverside in North Lanarkshire, with an elevation of around 60 metres. North Barrwood lies near the towns of Kilsyth and Barrwood, and is approximately 10 miles from Stirling. North Barrwood has a population of around 3509 people, predominantly residing in flat-type housing.

## Once our engineers arrive with you in North Barrwood: what we do

- Three things get established before any price — your fuel that was put in, the amount, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.

- Out goes the tainted fuel.

- We rinse your fuel lines and clean the fuel filter, and so what's left in your system isn't what caused the trouble.

- Your system gets primed, on clean diesel.

- It's started with clean diesel in it, and we check that it is running correctly.

That has it ready to set off.

Permanent damage is very rare when it has been caught early, and as all of this is done where the car is, it never has to go to a garage.

Our technicians flush the lines instead of only draining your tank, and the reason is that diluted fuel has already reached your filter and the pump: it was a start and a drive, however short. The drive truly assists — pulled off the forecourt, receipt read, a diesel Audi A3 parked up close to Burngreen Hall a couple of hundred yards later is about as well as this goes once the motor has turned. Phone us then leave it off.

## A separate problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank around North Barrwood

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first instruction is unchanged — your motor remains off — while this problem under it is a distinct one altogether.

The protection a fuel system relies on is stripped away by petrol, which dilutes the diesel.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it causes corrosion and deposits in its place.

Both are ours. There is a separate North Barrwood page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

Most of these occur somewhere unfamiliar, and the cause is mechanical instead of sloppy — almost no resistance meets a slimmer petrol nozzle entering a newer diesel filler neck. Two days into a diesel Ford Kuga, a fill-up by Kilsyth Library that you didn't think about? Phone us from where you are. Courtesy and hire cars go further before anyone notices it, and the further they go, the more petrol winds up at the injectors.

## Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around North Barrwood

One number wouldn't be honest here, as this is not one job. These are the things that shift it:

- Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.

- How much of the wrong fuel got in, measured against how much the tank takes.

- Whether it was petrol or AdBlue.

- Whether a technician can safely get to your vehicle and work on it, which depends on where your vehicle is.

A firm answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: the vehicle, the amount, and if it has run.

If it is not time-critical — the car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

## North Barrwood drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

## Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around North Barrwood?

Yes — forecourts are where a good part of this happens.

Our technicians visit Tesco and the other forecourts locally all the time, with the site's permission — tell us which one you are at when you phone and we'll tell you whether our engineers can work there.

## A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Litres aren't the measure. Ratio is, and a lot more than either, it matters whether anything has been run.

What determines how much work is required is whether that blend has been pulled through your fuel system — because although five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate matter from five in a full one, either way that's the question.

## I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then switch off and leave it off.

It's fixable a lot more regularly than motorists fear, even though driving is what moves the trouble from your tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A drain then flush carried out correctly is not a change and does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty.

Another good reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

What petrol has weakened is not restored by two-stroke oil, which is an old fix for a distinct issue. So no.

The pump still has to cope with it, since that tank still has petrol in it later.

## Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

No. We drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is, so there is no need to bring it to a franchised dealer.

## Standing next to it?

Turned off is how the car remains.

Already driven it? Then pull in somewhere safe, turn off, and let the car stay that way.

This is recoverable from much more commonly than motorists fear, and a still, cold motor is the best place to be in.

Clearing misfilled cars, North Barrwood and the rest of North Lanarkshire, wherever they are. Roadside. Forecourt. Home.
