# Petrol in a Diesel Car in North End

If you have not turned on the motor as yet, don't. A fuel drain and nothing more is nearly always what a vehicle requires while the fuel is still in your tank and the motor has not run, which is why it is the following few minutes that count, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel goes to the car wherever it has come to rest in North End or the remainder of Norfolk, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, and drains and cleans it there.

We can explain what the next move will be. Contact us — it happens before all else.

## The first five steps: petrol in a diesel

- Don't fire it up. Fired up all the same? Then don't trust it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle generally can't run, so the driver stops and the damage ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It pulls away fine, for several miles. Drivers get that reversed. It is not fine — the fuel system is wearing every mile you drive.

- Flicking the ignition on frequently primes your system, and priming is what draws petrol out of your tank and into your pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps protected on its way through, before it combusts. Petrol manages the burning and none of the oiling. Leave the car's ignition off.

- Topping up removes nothing. It hands you a larger tank of the same mixture, since a diesel fuel system won't accept petrol by percentage as that guidance presumes — so don't add diesel on top to dilute it. Octane is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.

- Sit tight if it is sensible to. Hazards on, engine off, leave the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Sir Lewis Street, anywhere — a difficult place for us beats a started diesel, and nothing is simpler for us to handle than a motor that never moved.

- Check where you are before ringing. A postcode beginning PE30 2, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise the van circles rather than showing up.

- Phone 0333 366 0103. Anticipate three queries — what went in, about how much, plus if the car has been started. The responses shape all that follows.

Phone before you fetch it. Petrol into a diesel Volkswagen Golf this morning, and the car at Kings Lynn ever since? Then the day has taken nothing from you: fuel in a tank is inert, and any wear was done on the run in, when the pump was drawing diesel that petrol had weakened.

## Pump-side drains for petrol in a diesel

Most of the work begins at the pump, which means a large chunk of that ends up completed there.

The drain typically takes place on the spot. Still on the forecourt at Morrisons? Given the site's permission, that is somewhere we work, and often.

At the forecourt, this is caught with the motor never fired, and nowhere else manages it.

The few seconds between seeing your receipt and going for the keys decide how much needs cleaning. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the car was started and driven to get there, so fuel was pulled from that tank, through the filter and into your high-pressure pump. That means your lines and your filter need flushing as well as your tank. It is not a catastrophe, and our engineers can still put it right where the vehicle sits.

Clear of the petrol pump, the next customer can get through — so yes, let the staff help you roll the vehicle. Worth doing.

Shifting it four spaces does not justify firing the motor.

The complicated part is the bay, not your fuel. Motors either side of you, a trolley shelter behind, and occasionally a height barrier on the way in that decides whether our van can get to you at all — so when you call from a car park like the one at Baltika, say how much space there is round you and which way round your car is. Those we visit often. Should there be no room to work next to the diesel Renault Megane, it gets shifted with the engine off, and not out of fussiness over a couple of seconds of running: priming takes place at every start, more of the mixture exits your tank for the pump, and two shunts into a better space have quietly made a worse job of what was just a car standing still.

## North End plus the areas next to it

North End is a residential suburb, so our technicians are out to it and to anywhere around it on those same runs: West Lynn, Highgate, Kings Lynn, St James End and North Lynn.

If yours isn't on that list it doesn't mean we never come — there are separate pages for nearly all locations around Norfolk, and the ones listed above are simply the closest neighbours.

Guessing is the thing to resist, especially on the border or somewhere your satnav fails. Contact us and check.

The patch the page spans appears on our map.

We work by the road, on forecourts, on driveways and in car parks across all of it, and your car doesn't need to come to us.

Every restart primes the lines and drags more petrol past your filter then into the pump. So a wrongly fuelled diesel BMW 3 Series on the zig-zags outside Eastgate Academy is a nuisance, while the same vehicle restarted three more times to be courteous is a fuel system rather than a tank. Someone will tell you to shift the car out of that gateway and fix it later. Please don't. Leave it there, let people moan, then call us.

## Broken down on the roadside near North End

Not everyone has the chance to stop somewhere sensible.

Set off, then twigged? Ended up on the verge beside Cresswell Street, or stuck in some lay-by with your hazards flashing? That's a common call here. Not an unusual one.

Remain by the motor when it's wise to be inside, but out of the car when it is not.

Don't fire it up to get to a nicer location. It'll go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging draws the mixture deeper into your fuel system.

However difficult the spot, it's no trouble for us to come to it, and that's far better for the vehicle than carrying on.

## Petrol in a diesel, and the motor has travelled

under 50 miles out of North End, the local A1(M) is what counts now.

A misfuelled diesel will usually get you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong, and the symptoms when they arrive are generally a drop in power, a lumpy idle and some smoke rather than a neat stop.

Come off at the first sensible junction, turn off, and do not start it to move it.

Presume the worst of that on a long run. Anything near the under 50 miles to the closest city, and the contamination has been through your filter, through your pump, through the fuel injectors. Say so when you ring. What our technicians bring changes.

## North End itself

North End is a coastal suburban area in Norfolk, situated near the towns of Kings Lynn and West Lynn. North End has a low elevation of around 6 metres above sea level and is located approximately 25 miles from the city of Ely. North End is characterized by a high proportion of flat housing, which is typical of many coastal areas in the region.

## What follows when our technicians arrive with you around North End

- The responses shape the work, which is why our engineers ask before giving a price: what went in, how much of it, and if your motor has run.

- The polluted mixture comes out of your tank.

- Fuel lines are flushed through and your filter cleaned, leaving nothing in your system that created any of this.

- Our technicians put clean diesel in and bleed the fuel system.

- The motor is started and checked to make sure it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.

That leaves the car ready to pull away.

There's no need for a workshop at any point, as the work is all done where the car is, and when it is caught early, permanent damage is very unusual.

Pulled off the forecourt, read your receipt, and left your diesel Vauxhall Astra up by True's Yard Fisherfolk Museum a few hundred yards later? That's about as well as this goes once the engine has turned. Call us then leave it off. The short drive truly assists, but it was still a start and a drive, and so diluted fuel has got to the fuel filter and your pump — which is why our technicians flush the fuel lines instead of only emptying your tank.

## A different job: AdBlue in a diesel tank in North End

Don't crank it: that opening rule applies whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is the problem itself.

The lubrication a fuel system relies on gets stripped away by petrol, which dilutes your diesel.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to rust and residue in its place.

Both are ours. There's a separate North End page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

New locations are where this happens most, and the reason is mechanical not careless: the narrower petrol nozzle goes into a current diesel filler neck with practically no resistance at all. Topped up near The Chapel of Saint Nicholas without thinking, in a diesel Audi A6 you have had for two days? Phone us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars usually get driven further before anyone spots it, and distance is what decides how much petrol reaches the fuel injectors.

## Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around North End

What changes the figure is set out below, because this job is not one job and our engineers can't frankly put a single number on this page.

- Whether the motor has been started or driven. This is the big one.

- Wrong fuel in, against what the tank takes — that proportion.

- Which was put in: petrol or AdBlue.

- Whether a van can safely reach the car and work on it, which depends on where the car is.

Tell us the vehicle, the amount and if it has run, and you'll get a firm answer rather than a range.

Not urgent, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

## Petrol in diesel: everyday questions in North End

## I'm on a forecourt in North End. Can you drain the vehicle on the spot?

Much of what we do gets done nowhere else. So yes.

Tell us which one you are at when you phone and we'll tell you whether our technicians can work there. With the owner's permission we visit JET and the other forecourts locally all the time.

## Is there a sensible amount of petrol in a diesel?

Proportion settles it instead of litres — and more than either, whether your motor has run.

Five litres into an almost dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mix been sucked right through, or has it not?

## Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What now?

Stop somewhere sensible, switch off, and keep the car off.

Driving shifts the trouble along — out of the tank, into the pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one truly useful thing left to you isn't restarting it.

## Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

It's not a change, and so a drain then flush carried out properly doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty.

Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one, which is another good reason to leave it switched off.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

Two-stroke oil solves a distinct fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No.

The pump still has to cope with it, because the tank still has petrol in it afterwards.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

There is no need to bring it to a main dealer, as we drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is.

## Waiting next to it?

Turned off is how it stays.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, switch off, and no restarting the vehicle later on.

Cold, still, going nowhere: that is the best position to be in. People fear this far more than they need to.

At the kerbside, on the forecourt or at home — call-out fuel draining around North End and throughout Norfolk.
