# Northchapel: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Never fire up the motor. While the petrol is still inside the tank and the engine has not yet turned over, a tank drain is almost always all it requires — and that gets decided in the coming few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled vehicles where they sit, throughout Northchapel and the rest of West Sussex, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive.

Contact us before all else happens, and you'll hear what follows from there.

## Your next five minutes: petrol in a diesel

- Give a petrol motor diesel and it will normally fail to run at all, and so the person stops there and so does the damage. Feed a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it idles, it drives off — all right for a few miles. Most people have that reversed, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So never crank it. And having started, do not rely on it: that fuel system is wearing down as you drive.

- Diesel ignites, and before it combusts it lubricates — that injection pump, the injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave the car's ignition be as well: flicking it on is commonly all it takes to prime that system, and priming draws petrol from the tank into precisely those parts.

- That advice presumes a diesel fuel system handles petrol by percentage. It doesn't. Add diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you end with is a bigger tank of the same mixture. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.

- Wait where you are if you safely can. A car that has not shifted is the quickest one to handle, and we would rather drive to a tricky spot than have it started. If you are stopped on the verge on A283, switch your hazards on and keep it there.

- Get your location ready before you dial. A postcode beginning GU28 9 and whatever is nearest to you with a name on it is the difference between our van arriving and the van circling.

- Call 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three things — what got in, roughly how many litres, plus if the motor has been run. The replies settle whatever comes after.

## Forecourt draining for petrol in a diesel

Much of this work begins at a pump, which means a big share of that is finished there.

Still at Harvest Energy? Then that's normally where it takes place. Station forecourts are routine for us, with the agreement of the owner.

Before the engine has started — a forecourt is the single setting it is caught.

Anywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — your car was started and moved to get there, which means fuel was pulled from your tank, through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That is not a catastrophe, and our engineers can still sort it out where it is. It does mean your lines and the fuel filter need cleaning as well as your tank, and that's determined by the few seconds between checking the till receipt and reaching for your key.

Staff will generally help out pushing it clear of the petrol pump, which lets the next motorist get by. Take the offer.

Firing the car over four car lengths? Never.

We're in car parks like the one outside Waitrose often, and it is hardly ever the fuel that complicates them. It's the bay. Vehicles both sides. Trolleys stacked up behind. Occasionally a height limit at the entrance, which determines whether a van gets to you at all. So say how penned in you are when you phone, and which way the vehicle is pointing. If there's no room to work alongside your Skoda Octavia, our engineers roll it without the engine. That is not fussiness over a few seconds: starts prime things, mixture comes out of the tank on to your pump, and a motor shifted twice for a better spot is gradually a bigger job than one no one touched.

## Can our technicians serve your corner of Northchapel?

Being a rural village, Northchapel sees a steady visit, while the villages round about go with it on that same journey: Navant Hill and Hillgrove, Shopp Hill and Fisherstreet, Gospel Green.

If yours isn't on that list that does not mean we never come — there are separate pages for the majority of locations around West Sussex, and the ones mentioned above are just the closest neighbours.

Contact us and ask instead of assuming — county lines above all, and wherever the satnav tends to struggle with.

The ground the page spans appears on our map.

We work at the roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and in car parks across all of that, and your vehicle doesn't need to travel to us.

Nothing alerts you, since from the driver's seat there's nothing to be warned about. Your diesel Peugeot 308 will have felt completely normal on the way back from Northchapel Community Primary School, and they all do — which is the trap with petrol in a diesel and not the reverse. Diesel in a petrol car generally refuses to run, stopping the driver and stopping the wear with them. Petrol in a diesel fires up, idles, moves off as though nothing had happened, and all the while your pump does its work without the lubrication its fuel is meant to supply. Tell us about how far, and how hard. The harder counts more.

## Stopped by the kerb anywhere around Northchapel?

Not everyone finds a sensible place to pull over.

Set off, then realised? Ended up by the verge beside St Michaels Close, or parked in some lay-by with the hazards on? That is a routine call here. Not a rare one.

Wait beside the motor when it is sensible to wait there, yet out of it if it is not.

It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that's the trouble: fire it up to reach somewhere handier and the blend goes further into your fuel system with every mile travelled.

Pressing on causes the vehicle far more harm than a van heading out to an inconvenient location, and that is no bother for us.

Leave it overnight. Phone first thing. Nothing about a diesel Nissan Qashqai parked in the car park by The Half Moon deteriorates as it sits, tank of petrol or not, and this job stays a straightforward one right up till the moment it gets driven home. The query our engineers arrive with is about that trip there: a cold engine over a short run is where petrol combusts least well, and whatever fails to burn can work its way past the rings into the engine oil.

## So you've run it? Petrol in a diesel after a couple of miles

This is where the Waterlooville Bypass comes in — under 25 miles from Northchapel.

A wrongly fuelled diesel will often take you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong, and the symptoms when they come are normally a loss of power, a rough idle and smoke instead of a tidy stop.

The next safe junction is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone.

Long drive? Anything approaching the under 25 miles to the closest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that reached by the petrol. Say that on the call, as it changes what goes in our van.

None of it is the motor failing. That's the bit worth hearing, and it is why the ordinary Little Wood call ends better than it sounds: a diesel Dacia Duster drives out there without fuss, comes back with the power gone, the idle lumpy and perhaps a little smoke, and the cause is the fuel no longer acting like diesel. Diesel has to be thick enough to seal the close-fitting components it runs through; petrol dilutes it; and a diesel injection system is hydraulic as much as chemical, needing the fuel to hold pressure instead of only to burn. So pressure that should build and stay built bleeds past gaps, delivery arrives weaker and later and less even than built, and all of that stops once your fuel is corrected.

## About Northchapel

Northchapel is a small village in West Sussex, situated inland at an elevation of 53 metres, with Navant Hill and other nearby high points offering views of the surrounding countryside. Northchapel has a population of around 616 people, living in predominantly semi-detached housing. Northchapel is located near other local places such as Hillgrove and Shopp Hill, and is within commuting distance of Chichester and London. Northchapel remains a quiet residential community with a strong sense of rural character.

## What we do when our engineers reach you in Northchapel

- Three things get asked before any price — your fuel that got in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.

- We empty that tank of all the contaminated mixture.

- Lines purged, filter cleared. Whatever is left after that isn't the thing that started the issue.

- Bleeding the system follows, once new diesel is in.

- Your engine is fired up and tested to be sure it runs properly on new diesel.

Then it's ready to drive away.

Our technicians do all of it wherever the car has come to a stop, which means it never has to go to a workshop, and if it has been spotted early, it's very unusual for there to be lasting damage.

## Northchapel AdBlue removal is a separate problem

The problem isn't the same, though the opening rule is — never fire it up — if what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol.

Weakened diesel, and no protection left for your fuel system that relies on it. That's petrol.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with your diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus build-up.

AdBlue removal around Northchapel has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it's often the more significant of the two. Our engineers handle both.

## How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain around Northchapel?

Our technicians can't put one figure on this page truthfully, since this job isn't one job. What shifts it:

- Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.

- Wrong fuel in, against what that tank takes — that proportion.

- Which got in: unleaded or AdBlue.

- Whether our van can sensibly reach the vehicle and work on it, which depends on where your vehicle is.

Tell us the car, the amount and if it has run, and you'll get a firm answer instead of a range.

Not pressing, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then does the job.

No dashboard light exists for this, which is why vehicles in that position typically get driven a second time before anybody calls. Don't be one of them. The throttle went dead and the idle turned uneven after a few streets, and the diesel Volvo XC60 is now sitting by St Laurence. Deadness there means fuel that can't build pressure properly rather than a motor packing up. Switch off. Phone us.

## Northchapel motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

## At a petrol station around Northchapel, can you do a fuel drain there?

Much of what our technicians do takes place nowhere else. So yes.

We work at Shell and the other forecourts around town regularly, with the owner's agreement — tell us which one you are at when you call and we will tell you if we can work there.

## How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Proportion settles it instead of litres — and more than either, whether your motor has run.

Five litres into an almost dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mix been sucked right through, or has it not?

## I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?

Stop somewhere safe, turn off, then keep the vehicle off.

It's recoverable a lot more often than drivers assume, even though driving is what takes the issue from your tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart it.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain and flush done to a proper standard, which is no modification at all.

Another good reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

What petrol has weakened isn't replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a distinct fault. So no.

The pump still has to live with it, as your tank still has petrol in it later on.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — essential?

Wherever the vehicle is, our engineers drain and flush it there, so a drive to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

## You, and your car, still together?

Do not turn your engine back on.

If you have already driven it, stop somewhere safe, switch it off then keep it off.

Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that is the best position to be in. Drivers fear this a lot more than they need to.
