# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Northend?

Do not fire up your engine. If the petrol is still sitting in the tank and your engine has not run, a drain is nearly always all it takes — and that gets determined in the following few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled cars where they sit, throughout Northend and the rest of Fife, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway.

Call us before all else starts, and you will hear what follows from there.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to try next

- Never start the vehicle. Fired up regardless? Then don't rely on it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle typically won't run, so the person stops and the damage stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It pulls away normally, for several miles. Most people get that reversed. It's not fine — the fuel system is wearing down every mile you cover.

- Switching the ignition on commonly primes your system, and priming is what carries petrol out of that tank and into your pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps greased on its way through, before it burns. Petrol manages the burning and none of the protecting. Leave the car's ignition alone.

- Never tip diesel on top to dilute it. A diesel fuel system does not handle petrol by percentage the way that advice assumes, and topping up removes nothing — it merely leaves you a bigger tank of the same mixture. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is just petrol.

- Stay put if it is sensible to. Hazards on, engine off, leave it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Main Street, anywhere — an odd spot for us is better than a started engine, and nothing is simpler for us to sort than a motor that never shifted.

- Check where you are before calling. A postcode starting KY1 4, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise the van circles instead of turning up.

- What got in, about how much, plus whether the motor has fired — those three details shape the entire job. Dial 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Nothing about the hours since has cost you anything. Fuel in a tank is inert, so a diesel Volkswagen Passat left outside Glenrothes with Thornton this morning is no worse at five than it was at nine — what pulled weakened diesel through the pump was the drive in. Phone before you head off to fetch the vehicle.

## On the forecourt: removing petrol from your diesel

Most of the job begins at a pump, so a large portion of that gets completed on site.

The drain typically takes place on the spot. Still on the forecourt at BP? Given the site's agreement, that's a spot our technicians work, and regularly.

No place but the forecourt can it be halted with your engine still unstarted.

The few seconds between checking the receipt and going for the key decide how much requires rinsing. Anywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the car was switched on and driven to get there, so fuel was sucked from that tank, through your filter then into your high-pressure pump. That means the fuel lines and your filter need flushing as well as the tank. It's not a calamity, and our engineers can still deal with it where your car is.

Move the car out of the way if the staff offer, and they usually will. The next customer gets through the pump, and that is worth doing.

Cranking the car just for four car lengths? No.

## Service around Northend

The same journeys carry us to Thornton, Stenton, Eastfield, Finglassie and Coaltown of Balgonie besides Northend, which is a residential suburb.

Not on this list? That says nothing. The names above are only the nearest few, and the majority of locations across Fife have a page of their own somewhere on the site.

Phone to check instead of presuming — boundaries especially, and wherever your phone may get wrong.

The ground this page covers sits on our map.

Our technicians work by the road, on forecourts, on driveways and in car parks throughout all of it, and the car never needs to travel to us.

Put diesel in a petrol car and usually it won't run, so the driver stops there and the wear stops with them. Reverse it — petrol into a diesel — and the car starts, ticks over and drives off as though nothing had happened, while the high-pressure pump works without the lubrication the fuel is meant to be supplying. That is the trap, and it is why your diesel Dacia Duster will have seemed completely usual coming back from the local primary school. They all do. From the driver's seat there's nothing to caution you about, so nothing tells you. Call us with approximately how far you travelled, and how hard; the second answer matters more than the first.

## Stopped on the kerbside anywhere in Northend?

Not everyone gets a safe spot to pull in.

Set off, then twigged? Finished up on the verge beside Donald Crescent, or stuck in some lay-by with the hazard lights on? That is a normal call here. Not an unusual one.

Sit with the motor when it is sensible to wait in it, and clear of it if it's not.

Do not fire it up to reach a nicer location. It will go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls the mix deeper into the system.

However awkward the spot, it's no problem for us to get to it, and that's a lot better for your car than driving on.

## Petrol in a diesel, and the vehicle has rolled

This is where the local M90 comes in, under 10 miles out of Northend.

A drop in power, an uneven idle, smoke: those are the signs when they come, instead of a neat stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will usually get you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong at all.

Get off at the next safe junction, turn off, and never start the vehicle to reposition.

It changes what our technicians bring, so tell us when you phone: on a longer drive — anything near the under 15 miles to the closest city — assume the contamination has been through the filter, your pump and the fuel injectors.

Injection pressure is the part being lost. Petrol dilutes diesel, and thinner fuel slips past the tightly fitted parts that are supposed to build that pressure, so the farther a diesel BMW 1 Series travelled, the less well it held. Fine on the way out and flat on the way back is how the run to Thornton Memorial Park went, then, and that tank is where to look. Stop somewhere safe, turn off then phone us.

## Northend itself

Northend is a suburban area situated on the riverside in Fife, with a relatively low elevation of 57 metres. Northend is located near several other communities, including Thornton, Stenton, and Eastfield, and is approximately 14 miles from the city of Dunfermline. Northend is characterized by its predominant housing type, which is flats, and is home to around 2111 residents. Northend is also relatively distant from major cities in England, being around 344.7 miles from London.

## Our job in Northend, step by step

- Our engineers find out what was put in, how much, and if your motor has run. The answers alter the work, which is why our technicians ask before pricing.

- Out goes the contaminated fuel.

- Lines rinsed, filter cleared. Whatever is left after that isn't the thing that started the problem.

- Bleeding the system follows, once new diesel is in.

- It's started with new diesel in it, and we check that it's running correctly.

That leaves the car ready to set off.

Lasting damage is very unusual when it has been spotted early, and because all of it is done where the car is, it never has to be taken to a workshop.

Three things help when you phone from near Markinch & Thornton Parish Church: which side the filler is on, whether a technician can pull up alongside without blocking the road, and if your engine has run since you filled up. On-street is the commonest place our technicians work, and so the place itself is rarely the problem — we'd far rather deal with a cramped parking space than with a motor that has been driven to somewhere more convenient. We'll drain the Citroen C3, change your filter where there's a usable one, flush your lines then put fresh fuel through the whole circuit, as by this point the worst of that is waiting in the lines rather than in that tank.

## Northend AdBlue removal is a different matter

The fault isn't the same, though the opening instruction is — don't crank it — if what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol.

The protection a fuel system relies on is stripped away by petrol, which thins your diesel.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus build-up.

Usually the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the detail lives on its own Northend page. Both are ours to handle.

## What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain costs in Northend

Truthfully, no single number belongs on a page like this. The job varies. Here is what moves it:

- Whether your engine has been started or driven. This is the big one.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.

- Which went in: unleaded or AdBlue.

- Access: the car's position, and whether working on it there's sensible for a technician.

A firm answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: your vehicle, the amount, and if it has run.

Not pressing, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then works.

Somebody sure of themselves will tell you to drain the vehicle then put fresh diesel in. Half right, that. Try it on a diesel Vauxhall Insignia near Thornton Town Hall and your engine will start — which is exactly why it sounds like sense. Here's the catch: there is petrol left in your filter and the feed lines, and the first thing the engine does is pull it back through the pump again. Draining a tank achieves nothing about fuel that already left your tank. Call us. The circuit gets cleaned, the fuel filter comes off where there's one worth removing, and that is what separates a repaired vehicle from one that simply starts.

## Petrol in diesel questions from Northend motorists

## Fuel drains on a Northend petrol station forecourt

Yes, and it is where a fair portion of this work happens.

Consent from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Morrisons is somewhere we are regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you'll hear if working there is possible.

## A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Litres are not the yardstick. Proportion is, and far more than either, it counts whether anything has been run.

Five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is required is whether that blend has been sucked through the system.

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that.

Driving is what moves the trouble from your tank into the pump and injectors — but it is recoverable far more regularly than drivers fear, and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart the vehicle.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

It is not an alteration, and so a drain and flush carried out correctly does not void a manufacturer's warranty.

Another reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a different problem and it does not restore what petrol has diluted.

The tank still has petrol in it later, and your pump still has to put up with it.

## Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

Wherever the car is, our technicians drain and clean it there, so a trip to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

## Is the vehicle still with you?

Shut off is the way the car stays.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, turn off, and no restarting it afterwards.

This is recoverable from a lot more commonly than motorists assume, and a stationary, cold car is the best place to be in.

Draining misfilled cars, Northend and the rest of Fife, wherever they are. Roadside. Forecourt. Home.
