# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Northiam?

If you have not fired up your engine yet, do not. A drain and nothing else is nearly always what a car needs while the fuel is still in that tank and the engine has not yet turned over, which is why it's the coming few minutes that count, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel travels to your car wherever it has ended up in Northiam or the rest of East Sussex, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, and drains and flushes it there.

Call us and we will explain what comes from here before you do anything else.

## The next five steps: petrol in a diesel

- Never crank it. Started regardless? Then never trust it. Diesel in a petrol car typically will not run, and so the driver stops and the wear stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It pulls away fine, for a few miles. Most people get that reversed. It's not all right — the fuel system is grinding every mile you do.

- Two jobs, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps your injection pump and injectors greased. Petrol only manages the one. That is why the car's ignition remains off too — switch it on and you often prime the system, and that is petrol leaving the tank for precisely those components.

- Don't tip diesel on top to thin it. A diesel fuel system won't tolerate petrol by percentage as that guidance presumes, and topping up clears nothing — it just gives you a bigger tank of the same blend. The grade makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.

- Stay put if it's wise to. Hazards on, engine off, leave it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Chapel Place, anywhere — an odd spot for us is better than a started diesel, and nothing is quicker for us to sort than a car that never moved.

- Keep your position ready before you phone. A postcode starting TN31 6 and whatever is next to you with a label on it is the difference between our van turning up and a van circling.

- What went in, roughly how much, and also if your car has run — the three facts decide the whole visit. Phone 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

The high-pressure pump spent that morning commute working on a fluid that had given up a lot of the protection it is designed around. Diesel lubricates that pump, and your injectors with it, before any of your fuel ignites; petrol does the burning and none of the protecting. So take a diesel Volkswagen Passat, fuelled at quarter past eight, driven in to work, and parked standing at Doleham till you realise somewhere around eleven. Three hours of standing have changed nothing about it. The few miles before that did a good deal, which is why the thing our technicians ask you is about miles instead of time. Call us. Keep it right where it sits.

## Removing petrol from a diesel on the forecourt

Forecourts are where the job mostly kicks off, and where a good part of it closes.

We operate on station forecourts routinely, with the site's permission, and so if you are still at JET that is normally where this drain takes place.

No place except the forecourt can it be caught with your engine still untouched.

Anywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the car was switched on and moved to get there, which means fuel was sucked from that tank, through your filter and into your high-pressure pump. That is not a calamity, and we can still sort it out where it stands. It does mean your lines and the filter need cleaning as well as that tank, and that is settled by the few seconds between checking the receipt and reaching for the key.

Out from the petrol pump, the next driver can get through — so yes, let the staff help you push it. Worth doing.

Four vehicle lengths is not worth the risk.

## Parts our team cover around Northiam

Mill Corner, Clayhill, Horns Cross, Newenden, Ewhurst Green — every one of those on the rounds that bring us over to Northiam itself, a rural village.

Not on the list? That says nothing. The names above are just the nearest few, and the majority of towns around East Sussex have a page of their own elsewhere on the site.

Contact us to ask rather than presuming — borders above all, and wherever your phone may misread.

This map shows the patch this page spans.

Roadside, forecourt, drive, car park: every bit of it is ground our engineers cover, and none of it needs the vehicle to travel to us.

## Northiam: stranded where you stopped

Not everyone has a suitable place to stop.

Set off, then realised? Ended up by the verge beside Main Street, or stuck in some lay-by with the hazard lights going? That's a routine call here. Not a rare one.

Wait with the vehicle if it's safe to be inside, but clear of the vehicle if it isn't.

It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that is the problem: restart the vehicle to reach somewhere better and that blend goes further into your fuel system with every mile travelled.

However tricky the place, it is no problem for us to come to it, and that's much better for your car than carrying on.

Easy job, this one — until somebody takes it home. A diesel Dacia Duster left at The Muddy Duck with petrol in the tank loses nothing by standing there overnight, and so leave it then ring us once it's light. Expect a question about the run there, though. Short and chilly is exactly where petrol battles to burn, and what will not burn can get past the piston rings then into the engine oil.

## Already run it? Petrol in a diesel over some miles

Here is where the M20 counts, under 25 miles out of Northiam.

It will frequently get you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it's smoke, a lumpy idle and power draining away — not a neat stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Never start it to reposition. Get off at the next safe exit then switch off.

Long drive? Anything approaching the under 50 miles to the closest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that arrived at by the petrol. Say that on the phone, since it affects what goes in our van.

Pull over somewhere safe, turn off and ring us. Normal on the way out to Vegetable Garden, sluggish on the way back? Then look at that tank. Petrol dilutes diesel; thinner fuel leaks past the precision components that build injection pressure; and the further your diesel Peugeot 3008 travelled, the less of that pressure it held.

## All about Northiam

Northiam is a rural village in East Sussex, situated inland at an elevation of around 48 metres. Northiam lies near the Kent border, approximately 28 miles from Canterbury and 47 miles from London, and is surrounded by smaller settlements such as Mill Corner and Clayhill. Northiam has a population of around 1198 people, predominantly living in detached houses. Northiam is characterized by its quiet, residential atmosphere and rural setting.

## What happens when we arrive with you around Northiam

- The replies alter the work, which is why we ask before pricing: what got in, how much of that, and if your engine has run.

- Our technicians drain that tank of all the polluted mixture.

- Lines purged, filter cleared. Whatever remains after that isn't the thing that created the issue.

- Our technicians put clean diesel in and prime your system.

- It is started with fresh diesel in it, and our engineers check that it is running properly.

Your car is then ready for you to pull away.

All of this is done where your car is, so it never has to go to a garage, and when it has been caught quickly, long-term damage is very rare.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Northiam is a distinct job

Don't start it: that first step stands whether what was put in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is this fault itself.

Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and removes the lubrication the fuel system depends on.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it causes corrosion and build-up instead.

Both are ours. There is a separate Northiam page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

A car you picked up two days ago gets driven further before anyone notices anything, which is the hire and courtesy issue in one sentence — and how far it went is what decides the volume of petrol reaching your injectors. Nothing careless about the mistake itself: a current diesel filler neck takes the slimmer petrol nozzle with practically no resistance, and so new spots see most of these. Call us from wherever you are, by Northiam Village Hall or not, and we'll come to the Ford Fiesta.

## What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost in Northiam

We can't put one figure on this page frankly, since the job is not one job. What moves it:

- Has it been run or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.

- How much of the wrong fuel went in, set against how much that tank can hold.

- Which went in: unleaded or AdBlue.

- Access: the car's position, and if working on it there is sensible for a technician.

Tell us your car, the amount and whether it has run, and you'll get a straight answer instead of a range.

For your car at home that's going nowhere and isn't time-critical, is fine too.

By now that tank is the least of that. Run a diesel and the mix goes into the fuel filter, into your lines, into your pump, into its rail — and none of that leaves with the tank contents. A diesel Vauxhall Insignia that got by St Mary needs its system flushed. Emptying is not the same thing.

## Petrol in diesel queries from Northiam drivers

## Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Northiam?

Much of what we do takes place nowhere else. So yes.

Tell us which one you're at when you call and we will tell you if our engineers can work there. With the site's consent our technicians work at Pace and the other forecourts locally regularly.

## Is there a sensible amount of petrol in a diesel?

Litres aren't the yardstick. Ratio is, and far more than either, it matters whether anything has been run.

Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mixture been sucked right through, or has it not?

## I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Switch off somewhere safe, then keep it that way after you stop.

Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does move the problem out of that tank then into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays salvageable a lot more regularly than motorists fear.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A drain then flush carried out properly isn't an alteration and does not void a manufacturer's warranty.

Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a dispute with one.

## Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

Two-stroke oil solves a distinct issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No.

Petrol remains in that tank later on, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no respite from it.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?

No. We drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is, so there's no need to bring it to a franchised dealer.

## Still with the car?

Don't turn the car back on.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, switch off, and no restarting it later on.

A still, cold car is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from far more often than drivers fear.

At the roadside, on the forecourt or at home — call-out fuel draining in Northiam and across East Sussex.
