# Petrol in a Diesel Car in Nunhead

Don't turn on your engine. If the fuel is still in the tank and the motor has not yet turned over, a tank drain is nearly always all it takes — and that is decided in the following few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled vehicles where they are, all over Nunhead and the remainder of Greater London, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway.

Our technicians shall show you what the next part is. Contact us — that happens ahead of everything else.

## Your next five minutes: petrol in a diesel

- Give a petrol motor diesel and it will generally not run at all, and so the motorist stops there and so does the damage. Give a diesel petrol and the car starts, it ticks over, it pulls away — fine for a few miles. People have that backwards, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So never start it. And if started, do not depend on it: the fuel system is grinding whenever you drive.

- Leave your ignition alone as well. Diesel has two tasks: it burns, and before it ignites it protects that high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors. Petrol does the first and not the second. Switching the car's ignition on is often all it takes to prime the system, which draws the petrol out of your tank then into precisely those parts.

- Don't pour diesel on top to water down it. A diesel fuel system doesn't tolerate petrol by percentage in the way that guidance implies, and topping up removes nothing — it merely leaves you a bigger tank of the same mixture. The grade makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.

- Wait where you are if you reasonably can. A car that hasn't moved is the easiest one to deal with, and our team would rather get to an awkward place than have it started. If you're stopped on the verge on Peckham Rye, turn those hazards on then leave the vehicle there.

- Have your location prepared before you call. A postcode beginning SE15 3 and whatever is next to you with a name on it is the difference between the van turning up and a van circling.

- Phone 0333 366 0103. Say what went in, approximately how many litres, plus if the car has started. These three facts determine your whole call-out.

Nothing about the hours since has lost you anything. Fuel sitting in a tank is idle, and so a diesel Volkswagen Passat sitting outside the nearest station this morning is no worse at five than it was at nine — what pushed weakened diesel through your pump was the drive in. Ring us before you set off to fetch the vehicle.

## Can petrol be taken from a diesel on the forecourt?

Much of the job begins at a pump, meaning a fair portion of that gets completed at one.

We operate on station forecourts routinely, with the site's agreement, and so if you are still at Esso that's generally where this drain happens.

At a forecourt, the mistake gets halted with the motor never fired, and nowhere else does it.

Everywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the car was started and moved to get there, which means fuel was drawn from your tank, through your filter then into your high-pressure pump. That is not a disaster, and our engineers can still deal with it where it stands. It does mean the lines and the fuel filter need flushing as well as your tank, and that's decided by the few seconds between reading the receipt and reaching for the key.

Out from the pump, the next motorist can get by — so yes, let the staff help you move the vehicle. Worth it.

Cranking it to roll four vehicle lengths isn't.

## Nunhead plus the towns near it

Nunhead is a residential suburb, so our technicians get out to the town and to the villages around it on those same trips: Honor Oak, East Dulwich, Brockley, Honor Oak Park and New Cross Gate.

If yours isn't on this list that does not mean we don't come — there are separate pages for nearly all places in Greater London, and the ones mentioned above are simply the immediate neighbours.

Close to a border, or anywhere your satnav can't find? Ring us and ask rather than guessing.

That map is the area the page spans.

Your car never needs to move to us. Our technicians work over all of that — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Twenty to nine at the gates of Ivydale Primary School, already late, and the till receipt in your hand shows unleaded. Hazards on, motor off, phone. Three miles in the Audi A4 sounds like nothing, but a diesel pump delivers fuel to demand — while a rushed morning drive needs plenty.

## Nunhead: stranded where you stopped

Some people find no safe place to stop whatsoever.

A normal call for us instead of a rare one: realised after setting off, ended up along the verge of Homestall Road or in a lay-by with the hazard lights flashing.

Safe right there? Stay by it. Not fine? Climb out and clear of it.

Don't fire it up to reach a better place. It'll go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging drags the mixture deeper into the fuel system.

However awkward the spot, it is no bother for us to get to it, and that is far better for the vehicle than pressing on.

## Run it already? Pull in, then check below

This is where the local M11 comes in, under 10 miles out of Nunhead.

It will frequently take you onto it, and some way along, before you feel a thing. Then it's smoke, a lumpy idle and power ebbing away — not a neat stop. Misfilled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Do not restart it to reposition. Come off at the next sensible junction then switch off.

It alters what we bring, and so tell us when you call: on a longer run — anything near the under 5 miles to the nearest city — take it the petrol has been through the filter, the pump and the injectors.

Here is the full mechanism. Diesel needs enough body to seal the close gaps it goes through, and petrol takes that away. That's it. Which explains the ordinary American Garden call — a diesel Vauxhall Astra, out there without a murmur and back down on power, uneven at idle, maybe a bit of smoke. Injection systems work hydraulically as well as chemically, and so the fuel has to hold pressure and not just burn; diluted, it escapes past those gaps and not building, and delivery comes poorer, later, less even than the engine was built round. Not a failing motor, though. Fuel that has stopped acting like diesel. Put that right and it stops.

## About Nunhead

Nunhead is a suburban area in south London, situated approximately 4.6 miles from the city centre. Nunhead is characterized by its predominantly flat-type housing and sits at an elevation of around 40 metres. Nunhead is close to nearby places such as Honor Oak, East Dulwich, and Brockley, and is home to a population of around 10,126 people. Nunhead is a relatively densely populated area with a mix of local shops and residential streets.

## What follows when our technicians reach you around Nunhead

- Our technicians ask first, price after. What was put in? How much? Has the engine run? Those answers change what the work really is.

- Your tank gets drained of everything.

- Our technicians rinse your fuel lines and clear the fuel filter, so what is left in your system is not what started the problem.

- The system gets bled, on clean diesel.

- Our engineers fire it up and confirm it runs correctly on clean diesel.

After that it is ready to pull away.

Lasting damage is very unusual when it has been noticed quickly, and since all of it is done where the car is, it never needs to be taken to a workshop.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Nunhead is a distinct job

The problem isn't the same, though the first instruction is — don't crank it — if what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol.

Thinned diesel, and no lubrication left for the system that relies on it. That is petrol.

Corrosion and build-up are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, as AdBlue is urea in water.

Frequently the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the full story sits on its own Nunhead page. Both are ours to handle.

Most of these occur somewhere unfamiliar, and the cause is mechanical rather than careless — almost no resistance meets a smaller petrol nozzle entering a modern diesel filler neck. Two days into a diesel Ford Fiesta, a fill-up close to Monument To John Allan that you did not think about? Ring us from where you are. Courtesy and hire cars go further before anybody spots it, and the further they go, the more petrol winds up at the injectors.

## Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel drain around Nunhead

What changes the figure is set out below, as the job is not one job and our engineers cannot truthfully put a single price on this page.

- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.

- How much of the wrong fuel got in, weighed against how much the tank holds.

- Which was put in: unleaded or AdBlue.

- Access: the car's position, and whether working on it there is sensible for a technician.

Tell us what your car is, how much got in, and whether the engine has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range.

Not time-critical, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then does this job.

The fuel filter, your lines, your pump and its rail: that's where the mixture is once a diesel has run, and it does not come back out with that tank contents. So that tank isn't where most of the trouble sits by this point, and a diesel Volvo XC60 that made it by Monument To Oppenheim And Schroeter needs your system purged rather than drained.

## Nunhead drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

## Fuel drains on a Nunhead petrol station forecourt

A good share of this work takes place there, so yes.

Agreement from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like BP is somewhere we are often enough, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you will hear if working there's possible.

## A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Whether your engine has run matters far more, though the ratio counts too, rather than the litres.

Five litres into an almost dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mixture been sucked right through, or has it not?

## Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What now?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that.

It's fixable much more regularly than people fear, even though driving is what moves the problem from the tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A drain and flush carried out properly is not a modification and does not void a manufacturer's warranty.

What's likelier to start a dispute is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the motor to remain off.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. It belongs to a distinct issue from a different era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind restores.

After that? Still petrol in your tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Wherever your car is, our engineers drain and clean it there, so a drive to the main dealer does not come into it.

## Is your car still with you?

Switched off is how the car stays.

Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere sensible, switch off, then let the vehicle remain that way.

Cold and parked, a motor is in the best place available — and motorists fear this much more than the recovery rate warrants.

Throughout Greater London and around Nunhead: call-out fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the roadside.
