# Oaken Bottom: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

If you have not started the engine as yet, do not. A drain and nothing more is nearly always what a vehicle requires while the fuel is still inside that tank and the motor has not been started, which is why it is the next few minutes that matter, not how much got in. Petrol in Diesel travels to the vehicle wherever it has ended up in Oaken Bottom or the rest of Greater Manchester, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, and drains and cleans it there.

We shall show you what the following step will be. Phone — this happens before anything else.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to try first

- Give a petrol engine diesel and it will usually not run at all, and so the driver stops there and so does the harm. Feed a diesel petrol and the car starts, it ticks over, it pulls away — fine for a few miles. Most people have that muddled, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So don't fire it up. And once started, never trust it: your fuel system is wearing down whenever you drive.

- Leave the car's ignition alone as well. Diesel performs two tasks: it combusts, and before it combusts it lubricates that injection pump and its injectors. Petrol handles the first but not the second. Switching your ignition on is frequently sufficient to prime your system, which moves the petrol out of that tank then into precisely those parts.

- Do not water down it. Diesel poured on top clears nothing, so all you have is more of what was already there, since percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system handles petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The type makes no difference.

- Wait where you are if you safely can. A vehicle that hasn't moved is the easiest one to sort out, and our team would sooner travel to a tricky place than have it started. If you are pulled up on the verge on Oakenbottom Road, turn those hazards on then keep it there.

- Find out where you are before ringing. A postcode that starts BL2 6, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise the van circles rather than turning up.

- Three answers determine the whole job: the liquid you tipped in, the rough quantity involved, and whether it has been running since. Our number is 0333 366 0103.

Tonight, please, not Monday. Taking it home is the only thing not to do: a commute has pushed real volume through your pump already, petrol-thinned diesel and plenty of it, and the return trip would more or less double the figure to no end. The Volkswagen Golf can stay outside Bolton perfectly well. Ring from the platform if handier; standing over us while our engineers work is not necessary.

## Draining petrol from a diesel at the forecourt

The work starts at a forecourt, mostly. Frequently the job finishes there too.

Still at Esso? Then that is generally where it gets done. Petrol station forecourts are normal for us, with the permission of the site.

At a forecourt, the mistake is caught with the motor never started, and nowhere else does it.

Our engineers can still put it right where it is, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, your car has been fired up and moved there, and that pulled fuel through the filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump, all the way from that tank. None of that is a catastrophe, although the flush then has to go past the tank to the fuel lines and the filter, and the few seconds between reading the till receipt and reaching for the key are what determine that.

Staff will normally help out pushing it clear of the pump, which lets the next motorist get past. Accept the assistance.

Cranking the car just to shift four vehicle lengths isn't.

Petrol in the BMW 3 Series, and it takes diesel? Shopping in the boot, you at Co-op Food, somewhere around Oaken Bottom? Then phone us, and leave your engine out of that — not even to exit the space. Someone gets to you. Tank drained, fuel lines cleaned, fresh diesel in, and home you go. Gentle throttle over a mile pulls little, and so these are often the easy ones.

## Oaken Bottom and the villages beside it

These same runs take us to Tonge Fold, Darcy Lever, Tonge Moor, Mill Hill and Springfield as well as Oaken Bottom, which is a residential suburb.

We still come. The names above are merely the immediate neighbours, and a page exists for most towns around Greater Manchester, so an absence from the list isn't an absence from the coverage.

Phone and ask instead of assuming — boundaries particularly, and anywhere the satnav may get wrong.

Look at this map for the patch shown on this page.

Your vehicle doesn't need to travel to us. We operate throughout all of that — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

## Stuck by the kerb anywhere around Oaken Bottom?

The opportunity to pull in anywhere safe does not come to everyone.

Set off, then realised? Finished up on the verge on Hengist Street, or parked in some lay-by with the hazards flashing? That's a routine call here. Not an unusual one.

Clear of the motor when it is not sensible to be inside, with it if it is.

Don't restart it to reach a nicer place. It will go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls that mixture deeper into your fuel system.

Pressing on causes the vehicle far more harm than our van coming out to an inconvenient spot, and that is no trouble for us.

Don't risk it. The drive home from The Black Horse is entirely possible, which is exactly the problem — a thinned tank does not stop a diesel starting or pulling away, it just wears down the parts the fuel is supposed to lubricate. Phone us, then let the Nissan Qashqai stay where it is.

## Petrol in a diesel, and the motor has rolled

Your St. Peter's Way is the one that counts here, and sits under 3 miles from Oaken Bottom.

Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will usually manage both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is seldom a tidy stop. Power falls away, your idle goes lumpy, and there may be smoke.

Come off at the next sensible exit, turn off, and don't restart the car to reposition.

Suppose the worst of that on a long trip. Anything close to the under 10 miles to the nearest city, and the mixture has been through your filter, through the pump, through the injectors. Tell us when you call. What our engineers bring changes.

## A bit about Oaken Bottom

Oaken Bottom is a suburban area in Greater Manchester, situated near the River Irwell and characterised by its terraced housing. Oaken Bottom sits at an elevation of 68 metres, approximately 7.9 miles from Salford and part of the wider North West England region. Oaken Bottom is close to nearby places such as Tonge Fold, Darcy Lever, and Tonge Moor, and has a population of around 4707 residents.

## The job around Oaken Bottom, step by step

- The responses shape the work, which is why our technicians ask before pricing: what got in, how much of that, and whether the engine has run.

- Our technicians clear your tank of all the tainted fuel.

- Our engineers rinse the fuel lines and clean your filter, so what is left in the fuel system is not what caused the issue.

- Our technicians pour new diesel in and bleed the system.

- When it's started, our technicians make sure it runs properly on new diesel.

Then it's ready to pull away.

All of this is done where your car is, so it never needs to be taken to a garage, and when it has been spotted soon, lasting damage is very unusual.

Leave the Citroen C3 by Trinity Methodist Church then phone us. We are blunt about not driving on since a wearing pump gives off, and what it gives off moves onward with the fuel to the injectors beyond it.

## A separate problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Oaken Bottom

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the first step is unchanged — the motor stays off — whereas the fault underneath it is a separate one altogether.

Petrol weakens your diesel and takes away the lubrication the system relies on.

Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that causes corrosion and residue.

Both are ours. There's a separate Oaken Bottom page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

New locations are where this occurs most, and the reason is mechanical not sloppy: the smaller petrol nozzle goes into a newer diesel filler neck with practically no resistance at all. Topped up near Leverhulme Athletics Stadium without thinking, in a diesel Kia Sportage you have had for two days? Ring us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars usually get driven further before anyone notices, and mileage is what settles how much petrol gets to the fuel injectors.

## Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Oaken Bottom

One number would not be fair here, since this is not one job. These are the things that shift it:

- Has it been run or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.

- How much of the wrong fuel got in, measured against how much the tank holds.

- Which got in: petrol or AdBlue.

- Where is it? And can a technician reach it and work there safely?

The car, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back clear instead of as a range.

Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is fine for that.

## Oaken Bottom drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

## I am on a forecourt in Oaken Bottom. Can you drain the vehicle on the spot?

Yes, and it is where a large share of this work takes place.

Agreement from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like BP is somewhere we are regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you will hear whether working there is possible.

## How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Whether your engine has run counts a lot more, though the ratio counts too, rather than the litres.

A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different scenarios, definitely. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is if your fuel system has had that mix drawn through it.

## Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What now?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that.

It is fixable far more regularly than people expect, even though driving is what shifts the problem from your tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart it.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A drain then flush carried out correctly is not an alteration and doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty.

Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one, which is another good reason to leave it turned off.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

Two-stroke oil solves a separate problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol thinned. No.

Petrol stays in that tank after that, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no break from it.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?

You don't need one. The vehicle is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a main dealer.

## Is your vehicle still with you?

Keep the car switched off.

If you have already driven it, pull over somewhere sensible, turn it off then leave it off.

This is recoverable from a lot more regularly than people expect, and a parked, cold car is the best position to be in.

Draining misfuelled motors, Oaken Bottom and the rest of Greater Manchester, wherever they are. Roadside. Forecourt. Home.
