# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Ocean Village?

With your tank still holding the fuel and the motor not yet started, almost every job requires only a drain, so leave your engine off. That outcome is determined in the minutes immediately after the fill-up, and not by the amount that was put in. Throughout Ocean Village and the rest of Hampshire, Petrol in Diesel drains the vehicle and flushes it where it sits, whether at a roadside, on a driveway or at a forecourt.

Phone before anything else starts, and you'll see what follows from there.

## What to do next about petrol in a diesel

- Do not crank it. Started regardless? Then don't rely on it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle generally will not run, so the driver stops and the wear stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It pulls away normally, for a few miles. Most people get that confused. It is not okay — the fuel system is wearing every mile you do.

- Two things, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps the high-pressure pump and injectors oiled. Petrol only manages the one. Which is why the car's ignition is left off also — switch it on and you commonly prime the system, and that's petrol exiting the tank for just those parts.

- Do not pour diesel on top to weaken it. A diesel fuel system won't cope with petrol by percentage the way that guidance presumes, and topping up removes nothing — it merely leaves you a fuller tank of the same blend. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.

- A car that has never moved is the easiest one to sort, so remain where you are if you safely can. Stopped on the verge on Ocean Way? Hazards on, then keep the car there. A difficult place suits us better than a started diesel.

- Get your position ready before you phone. A postcode starting SO14 3 and whatever is next to you with a sign on it is the difference between the van arriving and a van circling.

- Three details shape the entire job: the stuff you poured in, the rough amount of it, and if anything has been running since. Our number is 0333 366 0103.

Tonight, please, not Monday. Running it home is the only thing not to do: a commute has pushed real volume through your pump already, petrol-thinned diesel and plenty of that, and the return trip would about double the figure to no purpose. The Volkswagen Passat can stay at Southampton Town Quay perfectly safely. Phone from the platform if simpler; standing over us while our engineers work isn't needed.

## At the forecourt: removing petrol from your diesel

A big portion of this work gets finished at a pump, because that's where it often begins.

If you're still on the forecourt at Texaco, that is usually where this drain happens — we operate on petrol station forecourts regularly, with the site's permission.

A filling station is the only place the mistake can be caught before the engine has started.

Everywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the vehicle was fired up and moved to get there, which means fuel was drawn from that tank, through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That is not a disaster, and we can still deal with it where it sits. It does mean the lines and the filter need cleaning as well as your tank, and that's determined by the few seconds between reading your receipt and going for the keys.

Away from the pump, the next customer can get through — so yes, let the attendants help you move the car. Well worth doing.

Starting it for four car lengths? Not a chance.

Car parks like the one at Co-op Food are a place our engineers visit often, and the fuel is seldom the complicated part. The bay is: vehicles either side, a trolley shelter behind, sometimes a height limit on the way in that determines if our van can access you at all. So tell us how boxed in you are when you call, and which way the vehicle is facing. If our technicians can't work beside the diesel Renault Clio we will shift it without starting it — and that is not fuss about a handful of seconds of running. Each start primes the fuel system and sucks more of that mixture out of the tank and towards your pump, and so a vehicle shunted twice into a nicer spot has silently grown into a harder job than one left exactly where it stopped.

## Will our engineers cover your side of Ocean Village?

Crosshouse, Chapel, St Marys, Woolston, Southampton — each of those on the runs that carry us over to Ocean Village too, a residential suburb.

Our technicians do come. Those names above are just the closest neighbours, and a page exists for nearly all towns around Hampshire, so an absence from the list is not an absence from the coverage.

Near a boundary, or somewhere your phone can't find? Contact us and ask rather than presuming.

The area this page covers appears on our map.

All of it is territory our technicians serve: a kerbside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You don't drive your vehicle anywhere.

Twenty to nine. At the gates of Hope Community School Southampton. Late already, and the till receipt in your hand shows unleaded. Put the hazards on, leave your engine alone, and phone us. You might think three miles is nothing, in the Skoda Octavia or anything else — except that fuel is metered on demand, and a dash taken in a hurry needs a great deal of that.

## Roadside stops around Ocean Village

Not everybody has a suitable place to stop.

Set off, then realised? Ended up by the verge of Mermaid Way, or parked in some lay-by with the hazard lights on? That is a routine call here. Not an odd one.

Out of the car when it is not safe to be in it, by it when it is.

Do not start up your engine to nurse the car somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling that mixture further into your fuel system.

However tricky the location, it's no problem for us to get to it, and that's much better for the car than driving on.

## Petrol in a diesel, but the motor has gone

The local M27 is the road that matters now, and it runs under 5 miles from Ocean Village.

Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will frequently manage both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is rarely a clean stop. Power drains away, your idle turns rough, and there may be smoke.

Don't start it to reposition. Come off at the first sensible exit and turn off.

Presume the worst of it on a long trip. Anything near the under a mile to the nearest city, and the petrol has been through the fuel filter, through the pump, through the injectors. Mention it when you call. What our engineers bring differs.

Nothing gets worse whilst it sits. Whatever the diesel Audi A4 did on the way to Queen's Park, it's doing none of it now: your pump is not turning. So take your time — but do not drive the vehicle home to buy yourself any.

## Ocean Village itself

Ocean Village is a coastal suburban area in Hampshire, situated near the city of Southampton. Ocean Village occupies a low-lying area, with an elevation of around 1 metre, and is characterized by predominantly flat-type housing. Ocean Village is close to other nearby places, including Crosshouse, Chapel, and St Marys, and is located approximately 69 miles from London.

## When our technicians get to you in Ocean Village: what happens

- The responses change the work, which is why our technicians ask before quoting: what went in, how much of that, and if your motor has run.

- Our engineers drain that tank of the contaminated fuel.

- Fuel lines are rinsed through and the fuel filter cleaned, leaving nothing in your system that caused any of this.

- We pour new diesel in and bleed the fuel system.

- Our engineers fire it up and check it runs correctly on clean diesel.

That has your car ready to set off.

We do all of this wherever your car has stopped, which means it never has to go to a garage, and if it has been spotted soon, it is very unusual for there to be lasting damage.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Ocean Village is a distinct matter

The problem is not the same, though the opening instruction is — don't fire it up — if what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol.

Thinned diesel, and no protection left for your fuel system that depends on it. That is petrol.

AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it brings corrosion and build-up instead.

Our engineers deal with both, and AdBlue removal around Ocean Village has its own page with the full story — including why it's usually the more serious of the two.

## Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel drain around Ocean Village

What moves the price is set out below, as the job isn't one job and we cannot truthfully put a single figure on this page.

- Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.

- How much of the wrong fuel went in, judged against how much the tank can hold.

- The kind of liquid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.

- Whether a van can sensibly reach your vehicle and work on it, which hinges on where your car is.

Tell us the vehicle, the amount and if it has run, and you'll get a clear answer rather than a range.

For the vehicle at home that's going nowhere and isn't pressing, is fine too.

By this point the tank is not where most of the damage is. Once a diesel has run, the mixture is in your filter, the fuel lines, your pump and the rail — and it does not come back out with your tank contents. A diesel Vauxhall Astra that got near Calshot Spit Lightship needs your system purged, not cleared.

## Petrol in diesel: frequent questions around Ocean Village

## I am on a forecourt in Ocean Village. Can you drain it here?

Yes — forecourts are where a big portion of this takes place.

Often, provided the site consents: Esso, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether we can work in that spot is something our technicians answer straight away.

## How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Litres are not the measure. Proportion is, and much more than either, it counts if anything has been run.

Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is required is whether that blend has been drawn through the system.

## I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then turn off and keep it off.

Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does move the problem out of that tank then into the pump and injectors, yes, and it remains recoverable far more often than drivers assume.

## Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

It isn't an alteration, and so a drain and flush carried out correctly does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty.

What's likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the engine to stay off.

## Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

What petrol has diluted isn't replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a separate problem. So no.

Petrol remains in that tank afterwards, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no respite from it.

## Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

No. We drain and flush the car wherever it is, so there's no need to bring it to a franchised dealer.

## Still with your vehicle?

Never switch the car on again.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, turn off, and no restarting the vehicle after that.

Cold, still, going nowhere: that is the best position to be in. Motorists fear this much more than they need to.
