# Odsal: Petrol in a Diesel Car? Here Is What Happens

Stop, and leave your engine off — not on, and not for a moment to move the vehicle.

Petrol in a diesel that hasn't been run is generally a drain and a flush, done right where the car sits, and what you do in the coming few minutes decides that far more than anything else.

Anywhere you happen to be around Odsal, this is the order things go from here.

## Minute one: petrol in a diesel, engine off

Go through the following in order, before you do anything else.

- Take your keys out. Even your ignition by itself can prime your fuel system, drawing petrol out of the tank to exactly the components it damages, so leave it off wholly.

- Topping up with diesel sounds like it dilutes the issue. It does not: nothing gets out, and your tank simply carries more of the same.

- Near passing traffic? Then your hazards come on before anything else, so your car is easy to spot.

- Off the petrol pump by hand. On a forecourt, ask the staff to help you roll it clear of the pump. Do not fire it up to move it, however short the way.

- Hold on to the till receipt: the grade and roughly how much are printed on it, and they're what we ask about first.

Noticed on the move? Get off at the next exit if you are on the M606, under a mile from Odsal, and pull over somewhere sensible — not at the services farther on. Stage one comes after that.

## The fork in each Odsal fuel drain: has it run yet?

Everything after this stage depends on one answer.

Motor never run at all?

- Just your tank has petrol in it for now.

- Where the vehicle stands is usually where the work is done: a drain, then a flush.

- Being here is the best case — which is the whole point of stage one.

If it's been started, even for a moment:

- The lines and the filter now carry petrol pulled from your tank.

- Run it farther and the petrol reaches the injectors, having gone through the fuel pump first.

- Lines flushed, the filter seen to, occasionally more: the job grows as the miles does.

Petrol does not lubricate. Diesel does, protecting your pump and injectors as it flows through, which is why the line sits where it does.

A tank of petrol, left alone, hurts nothing.

Move the petrol, though, and it grinds down the very parts that move it.

## Before you call about petrol in a diesel in Odsal: what we need

A little planning is the difference between a technician that finds you and a van that goes round.

- Where you have stopped. A postcode starting BD6 1 is the best start.

- Give the road — Beech Road or wherever you have stopped — or the car park.

- Car parks are located most easily by what they serve: tell us the one at Tesco Express, and it is straightforward.

- That it's a diesel, plus the make and model of the vehicle.

- Which went in matters: AdBlue is a separate job from petrol, and Odsal has a page for it. So say.

- The amount: your receipt's litres, or otherwise how long you held the nozzle in.

- If it's run, how far plus how hard — and whether it has run at all.

- Hire or company car? Some contracts want the owner's authorisation for the work, and getting it before our technicians get there is quicker than afterwards.

Then call 0333 366 0103. If it can wait — the car is at home with going nowhere — does the trick too.

## Whilst you wait for a fuel drain in Odsal

Help, however well meant, is what does the harm while you wait. So hold to these.

- Your safety comes before your car. Somewhere exposed? Get away from the traffic and wait away from it. Fine where it sits? Stay with it.

- A helpful passer-by doesn't fire it up. Nor does anyone checking it still works, or rolling it a couple of yards.

- No additives. Two-stroke oil, injector cleaner, anything from your boot — none of it takes that petrol back out.

- Draining it yourself is not the answer: a can of siphoned petrol on a verge is a danger, and the fuel beyond your tank stays put regardless.

- The ignition stays off. Even for the radio or your windows.

## The fuel drain, step by step, once our van gets there

- Fuel, amount, whether it has run: the replies decide the job, and that's why we give a price after them rather than before.

- Then the tank is emptied, so the tainted fuel is taken out.

- Cleaning your lines follows, because a motor that ran has petrol past the tank, in the lines themselves.

- Cleaned, or replaced if the car has a serviceable one: the fuel filter is sorted next.

- Your system is primed with clean diesel.

- Starting it. When your system is primed with new diesel, our technicians fire it up and check it runs correctly.

Only once it is running on new diesel do our engineers leave.

Lasting damage is very uncommon if it has been noticed soon, so the car can go straight back to normal use.

## Once your fuel drain is done: driving around Odsal once more

- After it has been started on clean fuel, there is nothing unusual to do: drive normally.

- Keep an eye on the first miles. A warning light, smoke, a rough idle or a flat spot under your throttle means pull over then call us back.

- The paperwork covers the query a rental company, fleet manager or insurer may ask: what work was carried out. Keep it.

- The handle's colour isn't the guide to go by next time — the label on the petrol pump is.
