# Ohare: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

With the tank still holding the fuel and the engine not yet run, nearly every job takes only a drain, so leave the engine off. That result is determined in the minutes right after the fill-up, and not by the amount that was put in. Throughout Ohare and the remainder of West Dunbartonshire, Petrol in Diesel drains the vehicle and cleans it where it stands, whether at a roadside, on a drive or at a forecourt.

One ring our way is plenty: our engineers will tell you what comes from here. Do this straight away.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to try first

- Whenever you drive, the pump and the fuel injectors suffer. This is why you don't fire it up, and why you don't rely on it once it has started. The catch about petrol in a diesel in particular — the part drivers get wrong — is that it drives off fine for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor typically will not run at all, which stops the motorist and stops the wear with them. This one lets you keep going.

- Two things, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps the high-pressure fuel pump and injectors oiled. Petrol only does the one. That is why your ignition stays off too — flick it on and you commonly prime that system, and that's petrol exiting your tank for just those components.

- Topping up clears nothing. It gives you a bigger tank of the same blend, since a diesel fuel system won't cope with petrol by percentage in the way that advice assumes — so never add diesel on top to weaken it. Octane is beside the point too: super unleaded is petrol.

- Stay put if it's wise to. Hazards on, engine off, keep the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on O'Hare, anywhere — an odd place for us is better than a started engine, and nothing is easier for us to sort out than a vehicle that never shifted.

- Keep your position ready before you call. A postcode starting G83 9 and whatever is next to you with a sign on it is the difference between the van arriving and a van circling.

- Phone 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three questions — what got in, roughly how much, and if the motor has been run. Your answers determine whatever comes after.

## Pump-side draining for petrol in a diesel

Most of this job starts at a pump, meaning a big part of that is done at one.

If you're still on the forecourt at John H Glen & Son, that's usually where this drain happens — we work on garage forecourts all the time, with the owner's consent.

Nowhere except the forecourt can this be spotted with the motor still cold.

The few seconds between reading the till receipt and reaching for your key determine how much requires cleaning. Anywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — your car was switched on and driven to get there, so fuel was sucked from your tank, through your filter and into the high-pressure pump. That means the fuel lines and the filter require flushing as well as your tank. It's not a catastrophe, and we can still put it right where your car stands.

Away from the pump, the next driver can get past — so yes, let the staff help you wheel the car. Very much worth doing.

Firing it to shift four car lengths isn't.

The awkward part is that bay, not your fuel. Motors either side of you, a trolley shelter behind, and now and then a height limit on the way in that settles whether a van can get to you at all — so when you call from a car park like the one outside Aldi, say how much space there's around you and which way round the vehicle is. Those we attend often. Should there be no room to work next to the diesel Ford Focus, it gets shifted with the motor off, and not out of pedantry over a few seconds of running: priming takes place at every start, more of the mix departs your tank for the pump, and two shunts into a nicer bay have silently made a bigger job of what was merely a motor sitting still.

## Can our engineers cover your part of Ohare?

Bonhill, Pappert, Redburn, Braehead, Dalmonach — every one of them on the rounds that carry us over to Ohare too, a residential suburb.

Not on the list? It means nothing. The places above are just the closest few, and the majority of towns around West Dunbartonshire have a page of their own somewhere on this site.

Ring us and check instead of presuming, especially if you're on a border or anywhere the satnav struggles with.

This map outlines the ground the page spans.

Your vehicle doesn't need to travel to us. We work throughout the lot — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

A diesel pump meters fuel to demand, and a frantic morning dash demands plenty — so three miles in your Peugeot 3008 seems like nothing and isn't. Twenty to nine by the local primary school, running late, a receipt in your hand saying unleaded: hazards on, engine off, call us.

## Stranded at the roadside in Ohare

The chance to stop somewhere sensible does not fall to everybody.

If you realised after setting off and landed by the verge on Ladyton, or at a lay-by somewhere with the hazards flashing, that is a common call for us rather than an unusual one.

Out of the car while it isn't safe to wait in it, beside it if it is.

Never start it up to reach a nicer spot. It will go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging drags the mixture deeper into the fuel system.

Carrying on causes your car far more harm than a van heading out to an awkward place, and that's no problem for us.

## A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?

under 5 miles from Ohare, your M8 is what counts now.

A wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong, while the signs when they arrive are generally lost power, a rough idle and smoke instead of a tidy stop.

Take the first exit that is sensible, pull up there, and do not start the vehicle to move it.

On a longer trip — anything approaching the under 25 miles to the closest city — take it the mixture has been through your filter, your pump and the injectors, and mention it when you ring. It alters what our engineers bring.

Stop somewhere safe, turn off then phone us. Happy on the way out to Redburn Park, sluggish on the way back? Then look at that tank. Petrol dilutes diesel; runnier fuel leaks past the precision components that build injection pressure; and the farther your diesel Audi A3 went, the less of that pressure it held.

## All about Ohare

Ohare is a suburban area in West Dunbartonshire, situated on the coast at a relatively low elevation of around 50 metres. Ohare lies near the towns of Bonhill and Dumbarton, and is close to the larger city of Glasgow, which is approximately 15 miles away. Ohare has a mix of housing types, but is predominantly characterised by terraced homes.

## The job around Ohare, step by step

- Three things get checked before any quote — the fuel that went in, the amount, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.

- Your tank gets drained of it.

- Fuel lines are rinsed through and your filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the system that created any of this.

- Fresh diesel goes in, and then the system gets primed.

- It's run with clean diesel in it, and our engineers check that it's running properly.

From there, you are ready to set off.

Our engineers do all of this wherever the car has come to a stop, which means it never has to go to a workshop, and when it has been spotted early, it's very rare for there to be lasting damage.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank by mistake, in Ohare?

If what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the first rule is the same — never start the vehicle — yet the issue isn't.

Weakened diesel, and no lubrication left for the system that depends on it. That's petrol.

Rust and residue are what a diesel tank gets instead, since AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

AdBlue removal around Ohare has a page of its own with the details on it, including why it is usually the more serious of the two. Our technicians cover both.

Hire car or company car? Call them before you phone us — some contracts want the hire firm to sign off the work, and sorting that out first is a great deal faster than sorting it after that. Then ring us about the Kia Sportage close to Dalmonach Community Centre, and don't worry that you can't say how full that tank was. Nearly nobody can, in a motor they picked up two days ago, and our engineers work it out there. The reason our engineers ask is that petrol in a diesel does its damage as a share: the same few litres in a nearly empty tank is a far stronger blend than in a full one. Petrol is rated on how well it resists igniting under pressure, which is the opposite of what a diesel needs — so the stronger that mix, the more it rattles, smokes and goes flat.

## How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain around Ohare?

One number wouldn't be fair here, because this is not one job. These are the things that move it:

- Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.

- Which got in: petrol or AdBlue.

- Where the car is, and if our van can sensibly reach and work on it.

The vehicle, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight instead of as a range.

For the vehicle at home that is going nowhere and is not time-critical, works too.

What takes place next is the problem. The motor at once draws the petrol still sitting in your filter and the feed lines back round through the pump a second time, because draining a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Drain it and put fresh diesel in, a person sure of themselves will tell you — and that advice is half true, since do it to a diesel Skoda Superb parked up, Millburn Park say, and the thing starts, which is what makes it sound plausible. Call us instead. Our engineers flush the system and take the fuel filter off where the car has a working one, and that's the difference between the vehicle being repaired and your car simply starting.

## Petrol in diesel: frequent queries around Ohare

## I am on a forecourt in Ohare. Can you drain the vehicle here?

Yes — forecourts are where a large part of this takes place.

Tell us which one you are at when you phone and we'll tell you whether our technicians can work there. With the owner's agreement our engineers work at BP and the other forecourts around town all the time.

## Is there a sensible quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Litres aren't the measure. Proportion is, and much more than either, it matters if anything has been run.

Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that blend been sucked right through, or has it not?

## I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Stop somewhere sensible, switch off, and leave the vehicle off.

It is fixable a lot more frequently than drivers expect, even though driving is what takes the issue from the tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

It's not a change, and so a drain then flush carried out properly does not void a manufacturer's warranty.

What's likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for your engine to remain off.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. It belongs to a separate fault from a separate era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind puts back.

That tank still has petrol in it afterwards, and your pump still has to live with it.

## Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

No. Our engineers drain and flush the vehicle wherever it is, so there's no need to bring it to a franchised dealer.

## You, and your vehicle, still together?

The engine remains off.

Turn it off somewhere sensible then leave it off, if you have already driven it.

This is recoverable from a lot more frequently than people fear, and a parked, cold vehicle is the best position to be in.

Draining misfuelled cars, Ohare and the rest of West Dunbartonshire, wherever they are. Roadside. Forecourt. Home.
