# Petrol in a Diesel Car in Over

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled cars where they are, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, throughout Over and the rest of Cambridgeshire. The very first thing to do is not to turn on the engine. While the motor has not yet turned over and the petrol is still in your tank, a drain is almost always all it requires, and the coming few minutes settle that, not how much was put in.

Our engineers can explain what the next part will be. Ring us — that happens ahead of anything else.

## The next five minutes: petrol in a diesel

- Don't crank it. Turned on regardless? Then don't depend on it. Diesel in a petrol car usually won't run, and so the person stops and the harm ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It moves off normally, for several miles. People get that muddled. It isn't all right — the fuel system is grinding every mile you do.

- Diesel ignites, and before it combusts it greases — the high-pressure fuel pump, those injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave your ignition alone as well: flicking it on is usually all it takes to prime the system, and priming moves petrol from your tank into just those components.

- Topping up clears nothing. It hands you a bigger tank of the same mixture, since a diesel fuel system will not tolerate petrol by percentage the way that advice presumes — so do not pour diesel on top to water down it. Type is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.

- We'd much rather drive to a difficult place than have it started — so if you safely can, sit tight. Nothing is quicker to sort out than a car that has not shifted. On the verge on Overcote Road, that means hazards on and keep the car.

- Get your position prepared before you ring. A postcode beginning CB24 5 and whatever is nearest to you with a sign on it is the difference between the van arriving and a van circling.

- Dial 0333 366 0103. Let us know what got in, approximately how much, plus if the car has run. Those three facts determine the whole visit.

The high-pressure pump spent that morning run running on a fluid that had given up much of the protection it is designed around. Diesel greases that pump, and the injectors with it, before any of the fuel combusts; petrol does the burning and none of the lubricating. So take a diesel Skoda Octavia, filled at quarter past eight, taken in to work, and parked standing at Waterbeach till you realise close to eleven. Three hours of sitting have changed nothing about it. The few miles before that did a lot, which is why the question our technicians ask you is about distance rather than time. Phone us. Keep it just where it sits.

## Pump-side draining for petrol in a diesel

The job begins at the pump, mostly. Frequently the job ends on site as well.

We work on petrol station forecourts all the time, with the station's consent, so if you are still at BP that's usually where the drain takes place.

No place except a forecourt can this be halted with the motor still cold.

Fuel sucked out of that tank and through the fuel filter, right to the high-pressure fuel pump, is what occurs when your engine is started and your car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes your filter and your lines along with that tank. That's still not a disaster, and we sort it out where the vehicle stands. What determines it is whether the ignition was reached for in the seconds after your receipt was checked.

Out from the petrol pump, the next motorist can get through — so yes, let the attendants help you move the car. Very much worth doing.

Cranking it for four car lengths? Never.

## Coverage around Over

The same runs get us to Over End, Swavesey, Willingham, Boxworth End and Needingworth along with Over, which is a rural village.

There are dedicated pages for nearly all places across Cambridgeshire, and the ones named above are simply the immediate neighbours — so yours being missing from this list says nothing about if our technicians come.

Phone and ask rather than assuming, especially when you are on a border or anywhere your satnav gets wrong.

See our map for the ground included here.

We operate roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and in car parks over all of it, and the vehicle does not need to come to us.

## Over: stranded where you stopped

A chance to stop somewhere sensible doesn't fall to everyone.

Hazards flashing in a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge beside Horse Ware because you realised after setting off — our technicians take that call often enough that it's the normal kind.

Whether you remain with the car or step clear of it turns on if sitting in it is safe.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol draws the mix further into the fuel system — and oblige it often will, which is why the engine does not get restarted to limp somewhere safer.

A technician heading to a tricky location is no trouble for us, and it is much better for the vehicle than driving on.

What we will ask is whether that trip there was short and chilly, because that is where petrol is least likely to burn correctly — and whatever doesn't burn can slip past the piston rings and into the engine oil. Right up to the moment someone takes it home, a diesel Mercedes C-Class sitting in the car park outside The Admiral carrying a tank full of petrol in it is a straightforward job. Nothing degrades whilst it stands, so leave the car overnight then phone us next morning.

## Petrol in a diesel, but the vehicle has travelled

under 10 miles from Over, your M11 is what matters here.

A loss of power, an uneven idle, smoke: those are the signs when they appear, instead of a neat stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong at all.

Don't restart it to reposition. Come off at the next safe junction then turn off.

It changes what we bring, so mention it when you ring: on a longer trip — anything approaching the under 10 miles to the nearest city — take it the contamination has been through the fuel filter, the pump and your injectors.

Fine on the way out, sluggish on the way back. If that is how the run to Mare Fen went, that tank is where to look. Petrol weakens diesel, and thinner fuel slips past the precision parts that are supposed to build injection pressure — so the farther the Ford Kuga travelled, the less well it held that pressure. Pull over somewhere sensible, turn off then phone us.

## A little about Over

Over is a small village in Cambridgeshire, situated inland near the River Great Ouse and approximately 9 miles from Cambridge. Over sits at a low elevation of around 9 metres, in an area of flat fenland that has been drained and settled for agriculture. Over has a mix of old and new housing, with detached homes being the predominant type, and is close to nearby villages such as Over End and Swavesey.

## What we do when our technicians get to you in Over

- Our engineers check what got in, how much, and whether the motor has run. The responses shape the work, which is why our technicians ask before quoting.

- We drain your tank of the polluted mixture.

- Fuel lines are purged through and the filter cleared, leaving nothing in your system that created any of this.

- Priming follows, once new diesel is in.

- The motor is started and tested to confirm it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.

Your car is then ready for you to drive away.

All of it is done where the car is, so it never has to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been caught soon, permanent damage is very rare.

Ringing from close to St Mary's? Three things help us. The filler — which side of the car it's on. Room for a technician next to you, without the road being blocked. And whether anything has run since the fill-up. The spot itself scarcely matters: on-street is where our technicians work most, and we would much rather have a cramped spot than a motor somebody has driven somewhere easier. Then it is a drain for the Volkswagen Touran, a filter change where there is one worth changing, lines cleaned, fresh fuel put round the entire system. By now the worst of it is in your lines and not that tank.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Over is a distinct problem

The problem is not the same, though the first instruction is — do not crank it — if what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol.

Diluted diesel, and no protection left for your fuel system that depends on it. That's petrol.

Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that causes corrosion and residue.

AdBlue removal around Over has a page of its own with the details on it, including why it's often the more serious of the two. Our technicians cover both.

The slimmer petrol nozzle goes into a newer diesel filler neck with practically no resistance at all, which makes this mechanical instead of slapdash. New locations see most of it for that reason. So: topped up near Rehoboth Methodist Chapel without thinking, in a diesel Volvo XC60 you have had for two days? Phone us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars usually get driven further before anyone spots it, and mileage settles how much petrol gets to the fuel injectors.

## Paying for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Over

Our technicians cannot put one number on this page frankly, because the job isn't one job. What changes it:

- Whether your motor has been started or driven. This is the main one.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.

- The type of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where your vehicle is, and whether our van can sensibly reach and work on it.

Tell us what the car is, how much got in, and whether the engine has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range.

If it isn't time-critical — your car is at home and going nowhere — works too.

## Over motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

## Fuel drains on a Over petrol station forecourt

A large portion of this work happens there, so yes.

Agreement from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Morrisons is somewhere we're regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you will hear if working there is possible.

## Is there a sensible amount of petrol in a diesel?

Whether your engine has run counts much more, though the proportion counts too, rather than the litres.

Five litres in an almost empty tank is a different matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is needed is if that blend has been sucked through the fuel system.

## Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What now?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then switch off and leave it off.

Driving is what takes the problem from that tank into the pump and injectors — but it is salvageable a lot more commonly than people fear, and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart it.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain then flush done to a proper standard, which is no modification at all.

Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

What petrol has weakened isn't replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a distinct problem. So no.

Petrol stays in that tank afterwards, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no break from it.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?

There's no need to take it to a franchised dealer, because we drain and flush the car wherever it is.

## You, and the vehicle, still together?

Shut off is how the car remains.

Turn it off somewhere sensible and leave it off, if you have already driven it.

A still, cold car is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more frequently than people expect.

Across Cambridgeshire and around Over: call-out fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the roadside.
