# Overdale: Petrol in a Diesel Car? How Worried to Be

Far less than you likely are, if it has not been started.

Everyone in Overdale begins with "have I ruined it?", and the fair answer is generally no: petrol resting in your tank of a diesel remains harmless till priming, cranking or driving pulls it into the system.

Keep it that way: leave the engine off and call Petrol in Diesel.

What petrol actually does to a diesel, how to judge how far it's travelled, and how to keep it from happening again: that is the remainder of this page.

## Inside your engine: what petrol in a diesel really does

On its way through an engine, diesel does two tasks.

Lubricating comes before burning; it does both.

The high-pressure pump and your injectors are made to extremely fine clearances, and your diesel passing through them is what stops those surfaces from wearing down against each other.

Badly at the first, not at all at the second: that's petrol.

Being less viscous than diesel, petrol strips away the protection a fuel system needs, leaving a pump running on the blend to wear itself. It's equally made to resist igniting under compression — the opposite of what a diesel needs — which is where you get the rattling.

Put these together and the shape of the problem is plain.

The harm is done by movement, not by contact.

Where that petrol is only in the tank, it's an issue of fuel, nothing more.

The beginning of a mechanical problem is a pump that has been running on that petrol — and whatever a worn pump sheds moves on with your fuel to your injectors downstream.

## Overdale, petrol in a diesel: four cases, from mild to serious

Fuelled, and not started: no case is better.

Being on a forecourt is what makes this possible: elsewhere, your car has been driven there to begin with. With that petrol held in your tank alone, it's drained and cleaned on the spot, and nothing more is needed.

Started for a moment, or just the ignition on.

Once primed, the fuel system has pulled petrol from that tank up to your filter and the fuel lines.

Usually little more than clearing, rinsing and seeing to your filter, and so still simple.

Some miles driven, and your pump has spent every one of them running on thinned fuel.

The work is that tank, the lines, the filter and clean fuel through the entire circuit, and how hard the car was driven counts as much as how far.

Short trips, such as the school run to Newdale Primary School & Nursery, are one thing.

A run as far as Wolverhampton, under 25 miles away, is a very different job. So is any mileage on the M54, under a mile from Overdale, where the motor has been labouring hard throughout.

Driven until it protested. Clattering, an uneven idle, smoke, a throttle that has gone soft.

The fuel is not behaving like diesel any more, and your engine is saying so.

Leave it wherever it has stopped: a lay-by, a quiet street, the verge on Hartley Close.

What comes first is still the fuel drain and flush-through, and that takes care of it, with permanent damage very rare if a car is pulled over soon.

## Stories Overdale people hear about petrol in a diesel

"Top it up the rest of the way with diesel and it'll be fine" — a myth. It won't.

Nothing is removed by topping up — you're left with a bigger tank, still the same mixture.

That guidance presumes a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol by percentage. It does not.

Myth: "A current diesel can cope with a bit of petrol." If anything, the opposite.

At higher pressure, through smaller components: that is how a modern diesel handles its fuel, and so the lubrication counts for more, not less.

"It starts, it drives, and so no harm done" — the myth that catches most people than any other.

A petrol engine fed diesel normally will not run, and so the driver stops and the damage stops with them.

A diesel fed petrol generally starts, ticks over and drives away as though nothing has happened, while your pump wears.

Running does not mean fine.

Myth: "Add some two-stroke oil and drive it home." It's an old fix for a separate issue.

The petrol is still in the tank afterwards, and what it has weakened isn't put back.

"Drain it yourself and you're sorted" — a myth, because after it's been running some petrol sits in the filter and lines, ready to go straight back through your pump at the next start.

And, a can of petrol drained by the roadside is genuinely dangerous.

## How it happens: petrol in a diesel

It is seldom carelessness, and no one does it on purpose.

A diesel nozzle generally will not go into a petrol vehicle, yet the narrower petrol nozzle goes into the filler of a diesel nearly without resistance — so forecourts make this one mistake straightforward, and only in one direction.

It takes place when habit and your car stop matching.

A motor that's new to you — hired, on loan as a courtesy car, or just bought.

Households running one of each, petrol and diesel.

The pumps in a different order on a familiar forecourt.

Filling up in a hurry on the way to Oakengates, with a train to catch.

Years of petrol vehicles behind you, a diesel Volkswagen Passat in front of you at the forecourt for its first tank — that is when.

With rain, a call arriving, or children to deal with, your hand simply does what it has always done.

## How to prevent petrol in a diesel on your next fill-up in Overdale

- Not every forecourt in the UK follows green for unleaded and black for diesel, even if most generally do. Check the pump's label; the colour is only a hint.

- Plenty of cars state the fuel type inside the filler flap or on the cap, and so check it on the first fill in any car you don't know.

- One of each in the house? Label the key to your diesel — a bright fob, a sticker — because meaning to remember isn't enough.

- "Diesel", aloud, before you lift the nozzle — each time a new or hired car needs its first tank. It seems daft. It does the trick.

- Thinking about something else is when this becomes an easy mistake to make, so put the phone away then keep your mind on the pump.

- A misfuel inhibitor helps, up to a point. Some diesels have a filler designed to block a petrol nozzle, and add-on devices exist for vehicles without one. They are a backstop, not a reason to stop checking the pump.

- Less petrol means a weaker mixture, and so stop as soon as you notice — though remembering that your next step is unchanged. It is still not to start it.

## Petrol already in a diesel around Overdale? Begin here

Then, there is just a short order of things.

Starting it is out, and so is switching on your ignition.

The staff at the forecourt — whether at Esso itself or wherever you filled up — will normally help push it away from the pump if you ask.

What got in, about how much, and if it has run: tell us those when you call 0333 366 0103.

Say so if it was AdBlue rather than petrol: it is a different issue, with its own page for Overdale, because AdBlue brings corrosion and deposits instead of lost protection.

## Overdale petrol in a diesel jobs: why one costs more than another

Four separate jobs lie behind the four scenarios above — which is why there is no honest single price.

Mostly, your cost shifts with which one you are in.

Two things follow that: the petrol that got in as a proportion of what that tank takes, then the place the car is in and whether our van can get to it safely.

Three questions come first, before any quote, rather than after — what got in, how much, has it run — and that is the reason.

Those answers are what change a range into one firm number.
