# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Pen-lan?

With your tank still carrying the fuel and the engine not yet started, nearly every job needs only a drain, so leave the motor off. That result is determined in the minutes straight after the fill-up, rather than by the amount that was put in. All over Pen-lan and the remainder of Swansea, Petrol in Diesel drains the car and cleans it where it is, whether by a roadside, on a drive or at a forecourt.

A single call our way will be enough: our engineers shall explain what happens next. Try it first.

## What to do now about petrol in a diesel

- Give a petrol engine diesel and it will normally fail to run at all, so the motorist stops there and so does the damage. Feed a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it ticks over, it drives off — fine for a couple of miles. Motorists have that backwards, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So never crank it. And having started, do not rely on it: your fuel system is grinding as you drive.

- Two tasks, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps the high-pressure fuel pump and injectors protected. Petrol only manages the one. Which is why your ignition remains off also — flick it on and you frequently prime the system, and that's petrol exiting your tank for just those components.

- Never dilute it. Diesel added on top clears nothing, and so all you get is more of what was already there, since percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system handles petrol. Super unleaded? Simply petrol. The type makes no difference.

- Wait where you are if you reasonably can. A car that has not shifted is the quickest one to sort out, and we'd rather travel to a tricky place than have it started. If you are stopped on the verge on Cadnant Road, turn those hazards on and keep the car there.

- A van showing up rather than circling turns on two things: a postcode that starts SA5 7, and whatever is closest to you with a name on it. Have both prepared before you dial.

- Ring 0333 366 0103. Tell us what got in, roughly how many litres, and if the engine has started. These three answers settle the full call-out.

## Forecourt draining for petrol in a diesel

A good portion of this job is finished at the pump, since that's where it mostly begins.

If you're still at the forecourt at Murco, that's normally where the drain happens — we operate on station forecourts all the time, with the station's consent.

A forecourt is the only place the mistake is stopped before the motor has started.

Our engineers can still deal with it where it stands, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, your car has been fired up and moved there, and that pulled fuel through the filter and into the high-pressure pump, right from that tank. None of that is a calamity, though the flush then has to go past that tank to the lines and the filter, and the few seconds between reading your receipt and reaching for the key are what decide that.

Staff will usually pitch in pushing it out from the pump, which lets the next motorist get past. Welcome the offer.

Four car lengths isn't worth a restart.

## Areas we reach near Pen-lan

These same journeys get us to Caer-eithin, Penfilia, Lisbon, Manselton and Waun-Gron besides Pen-lan, which is a residential suburb.

If yours is not on that list that does not mean we don't come — there are separate pages for the majority of towns across Swansea, and the ones listed above are just the immediate neighbours.

Close to the border, or anywhere your phone gets wrong? Call us and enquire rather than guessing.

Check the map for the area covered on this page.

The vehicle doesn't need to move to us. Our technicians work throughout every bit of that — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Your diesel Dacia Duster will have seemed completely normal on the way back from the local primary school. They do, and that's the catch with petrol in a diesel and not the other way round. Put diesel in a petrol car and it usually will not run, so the person stops and the wear stops with them. Put petrol in a diesel and it fires up, ticks over and pulls away as though nothing has happened — all while the high-pressure fuel pump works without the protection your fuel is meant to be supplying. Nothing alerts you, since from the driver's seat there is nothing to warn you about. Phone with approximately how far you drove and how hard you worked it; the second answer counts more than the first.

## Pen-lan: stuck where you parked

Not everyone finds a sensible place to pull over.

Set off, then realised? Landed on the verge beside Heol Gwyrosydd, or parked in some lay-by with the hazards flashing? That's a common call here. Not a rare one.

Clear of the vehicle if it's not wise to wait in it, by it if it is.

Don't fire up your motor to nurse the vehicle somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging that mixture further into your fuel system.

Carrying on causes the car far more harm than a technician heading out to an awkward location, and that is no bother for us.

This is what a job in the car park by Penlan Social Club normally looks like. We reach your car, ask what went in, about how much, and whether the engine has run since — those three replies decide most of the work. Then the tainted mixture comes out of your tank, the lines get flushed, and the fuel filter comes off where your Peugeot 3008 has a replaceable one. New diesel goes in and your system is primed. Then our technicians start it, make sure it runs properly, and you drive away.

## A few miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

Here is where the M4 comes into it — under 3 miles from Pen-lan.

A misfuelled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong, while the signs when they arrive are typically lost power, a lumpy idle and some smoke rather than a tidy stop.

Never start it to move it. Come off at the first safe exit then switch off.

Long run? Anything approaching the under 3 miles to the closest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it got to by the petrol. Say that on the call, since it affects what goes in the van.

Happy on the way out, gutless on the way back. If that's how the drive to Mynydd Newydd Playing Fields went, your tank is the place to look. Petrol weakens diesel, and runnier fuel leaks past the tightly fitted parts that are meant to build injection pressure — so the further your Mercedes E-Class drove, the less well it held that pressure. Pull over somewhere safe, turn off and call us.

## All about Pen-lan

Pen-lan is a suburban area situated on the outskirts of Swansea, with a mix of semi-detached housing and a relatively high elevation of 153 metres. Pen-lan overlooks the coastal city of Swansea, which is approximately 2 miles away. Pen-lan is part of the wider Swansea urban area, with nearby neighbourhoods including Caer-eithin and Penfilia. Pen-lan has a population of around 4437 residents.

## What follows when our technicians reach you in Pen-lan

- Our technicians ask first, quote after. What went in? How much? Has the engine run? Those replies shape what the work actually is.

- Away goes the contaminated fuel.

- Lines flushed, filter cleared. Whatever remains afterwards isn't the thing that caused the trouble.

- Bleeding the system follows, once fresh diesel is in.

- When it's fired up, our technicians make sure it runs properly on new diesel.

That has your car ready to pull away.

All of this is done where the car is, so it never needs to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been noticed quickly, lasting damage is very uncommon.

Ringing from near Penlan Community Centre and Library? Three things help us. The filler — which side of the car it is on. Room for our van next to you, without the road being blocked. And whether anything has run since the fill-up. The place itself hardly matters: on-street is where we work most, and we'd much rather have a narrow spot than a motor somebody has driven somewhere easier. Then it is a drain for the Audi A6, a filter change where there's one worth changing, lines flushed, fresh fuel put round the entire system. By now the worst of that is in the lines and not that tank.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Pen-lan is a distinct matter

Never fire it up: that opening rule applies whether what was put in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is the issue itself.

The lubrication a fuel system relies on is taken away by petrol, which dilutes your diesel.

Corrosion and residue are what a diesel tank gets instead, as AdBlue is urea in water.

Usually the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the details sits on its own Pen-lan page. Both are ours to deal with.

Rattling, a ragged idle, white smoke, a throttle gone dead. That's a misfilled diesel Kia Sportage telling you what is wrong. Turn off where you have stopped, near Penlan Leisure Centre or anywhere else, and don't start it to find a better place.

## What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain costs around Pen-lan

Honestly, no single figure fits on a page like this. The job varies. Here's what varies it:

- Whether the motor has been run or driven. This is the main one.

- How much of the wrong fuel got in, compared with how much your tank takes.

- AdBlue or unleaded, whichever was put in.

- Access: the vehicle's position, and if working on it there's safe for our van.

Tell us what the vehicle is, how much went in, and if the motor has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range.

Not pressing, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

## Petrol in diesel: common questions in Pen-lan

## At a petrol station in Pen-lan, can you do a fuel drain there?

A good part of this work happens there, so yes.

Tell us which one you're at when you phone and we'll tell you if our engineers can work there. With the site's agreement our engineers work at Texaco and the other forecourts around town regularly.

## A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Litres aren't the yardstick. Ratio is, and much more than either, it matters if anything has been run.

An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct situations, of course. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is if your fuel system has had that mix drawn through it.

## I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that.

Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the problem out of your tank then into your pump and injectors, yes, and it remains fixable much more regularly than motorists assume.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain then flush done to a proper standard, which is no alteration at all.

An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

## Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a distinct fault and it does not put back what petrol has diluted.

The tank still has petrol in it after that, and your pump still has to live with it.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Wherever your car is, our technicians drain and clean it there, so a trip to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

## Still with the vehicle?

Leave it switched off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, switch off, and no restarting the vehicle later.

This is recoverable from far more often than people expect, and a stationary, cold motor is the best place to be in.

Throughout Swansea and in Pen-lan: mobile fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the kerbside.
