# Pen-y-fai: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

If you have not turned on the motor as yet, do not. A drain and nothing more is nearly always what a vehicle needs while the petrol is still in the tank and the motor has not yet been started, which is why it is the following few minutes that count, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel travels to the car wherever it has ended up in Pen-y-fai or the remainder of Bridgend, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway, and drains and flushes it there.

Our team can show you what your next step is. Call us — this goes ahead of anything else.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to do next

- Give a petrol motor diesel and it will usually fail to run at all, and so the driver stops there and so does the wear. Give a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it idles, it drives off — fine for a few miles. People have that reversed, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So do not start it. And once started, do not rely on it: that fuel system is wearing down as you drive.

- Leave the ignition alone too. Diesel does two roles: it ignites, and before it ignites it lubricates the high-pressure pump and those injectors. Petrol manages the first and not the second. Turning the car's ignition on is usually sufficient to prime your system, which pulls this petrol out of your tank then into just those components.

- Topping up clears nothing. It leaves you a larger tank of the same mixture, since a diesel fuel system will not tolerate petrol by percentage the way that advice presumes — so do not put diesel on top to weaken it. Type is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.

- Stay where you are if you reasonably can. A car that has never shifted is the easiest one to sort, and our team would much rather get to a difficult place than have it started. If you are pulled up on the verge on Y Llest, switch the hazards on and keep the car there.

- Keep your whereabouts ready before you dial. A postcode that starts CF31 4 and whatever is nearest to you with a label on it is the difference between the van turning up and a van circling.

- Three details settle the entire visit: the fuel you poured in, the approximate amount involved, plus if anything has been running since. The number is 0333 366 0103.

The drive in is what pulled weakened diesel through the pump. Standing still has pushed nothing. Petrol in a diesel Volkswagen Golf, parked at Wildmill all day, sits harmless in the tank whilst it waits. Phone us first — before your keys go in.

## Clearing petrol from the diesel at a forecourt

The job kicks off at a pump, usually. Quite often the job finishes at one as well.

If you are still on the forecourt at Murco, that is normally where this drain takes place — our technicians work on petrol station forecourts all the time, with the owner's permission.

Nowhere except a garage can the mistake be caught with the engine still cold.

The few seconds between reading the receipt and going for the key determine how much requires cleaning. Everywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the car was fired up and driven to get there, so fuel was sucked from your tank, through your filter then into the high-pressure pump. That means the fuel lines and the fuel filter require cleaning as well as that tank. It is not a calamity, and we can still sort it out where the car stands.

Staff will generally chip in pushing it away from the pump, which lets the next customer get by. Take the offer.

Cranking it for four vehicle lengths? No.

How much fuel your pump has sucked is what we're truly asking — not how long ago any of it was. So the enquiry we hope for runs like this: diesel Renault Megane, a couple of litres of unleaded, a couple of miles covered, now turned off outside Spar.

## Can our technicians reach your end of Pen-y-fai?

Pen-y-fai is a rural village, and so our technicians are out to the town and to the places near it on those same rounds: Tyn-y-garn, Court Colman, Pen-y-cae, Wild Mill and Aberkenfig.

Not on this list? It means nothing. The places above are simply the nearest few, and the majority of locations across Bridgend have a page of their own elsewhere on the site.

Ring us and check instead of presuming, above all if you are on a boundary or anywhere the satnav misreads.

The area this page spans appears on this map.

We operate roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and in car parks across all of that, and your vehicle never needs to travel to us.

Twenty to nine. Outside the local primary school. Late already, and the receipt in your hand reads unleaded. Put the hazards on, leave the motor alone, and call us. You could think three miles is nothing, in the Skoda Octavia or anything else — except that fuel is metered to demand, and a drive taken in a rush asks for a great deal of it.

## Stuck at the kerbside around Pen-y-fai

The chance to pull over anywhere sensible does not fall to everybody.

A normal call for us and not a rare one: worked out after setting off, ended up by the verge of Heol Eglwys or in a lay-by with the hazards going.

Safe right there? Sit by it. Not fine? Get out and clear of it.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol draws the blend further into your fuel system — and oblige it usually will, which is why the motor doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere safer.

However difficult the location, it's no bother for us to get to it, and that is a lot better for the car than driving on.

## Driven it already? Pull in, and read this

Here is where the M4 matters, under a mile out of Pen-y-fai.

A misfuelled diesel will usually take you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong, while the symptoms when they appear are typically lost power, an uneven idle and some smoke rather than a neat stop.

Get off at the first sensible exit, turn off, and don't start the car to reposition.

Suppose the worst of that on a long trip. Anything close to the under 25 miles to the closest city, and the petrol has been through your filter, through the pump, through the injectors. Tell us when you phone. What we bring alters.

## About Pen-y-fai

Pen-y-fai is a village in Bridgend, situated inland at an elevation of 68 metres, with detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation. Pen-y-fai lies near several smaller communities, including Tyn-y-garn and Court Colman, and is within a short distance of the larger urban area of Swansea. Pen-y-fai is home to a population of approximately 1564 residents, who live in a rural setting not far from the Welsh coastline. Pen-y-fai remains a relatively small and quiet village, surrounded by the Welsh countryside.

## Our visit around Pen-y-fai, step by step

- Three things get checked before any price — the fuel that was put in, the quantity, and if anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.

- Out goes the tainted fuel.

- Our technicians purge the fuel lines and clean the fuel filter, so what's remaining in your system isn't what created the trouble.

- Your system gets bled, on fresh diesel.

- After it's turned on, our technicians check it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

That has your car ready to set off.

We do all of it wherever the car has come to a stop, which means it never has to be taken to a garage, and when it has been spotted quickly, it is very uncommon for there to be long-term damage.

About as well as this goes, once the engine has turned: away from the pumps, receipt read, and the diesel Dacia Duster left near M&S Outlet barely two streets on. Ring us, then leave the vehicle off. A short hop does really help. It was still a start and still a drive, though, so the filter and the pump have had diluted fuel through them — hence flushing the fuel lines instead of only draining your tank.

## Pen-y-fai AdBlue removal is a different problem

The problem is not the same, though the opening rule is — don't start it — if what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol.

The protection a fuel system relies on is taken away by petrol, which dilutes your diesel.

Rust and deposits are what a diesel tank gets instead, since AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Both are ours. There's a separate Pen-y-fai page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

Knocking? Lumpy idle? White smoke, throttle gone dead? That's your misfilled Citroen C3, a diesel, saying what's wrong with it. Stop wherever you happen to be, maybe near St John's Church, then leave the restarting alone.

## What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost around Pen-y-fai

One number wouldn't be honest here, because this isn't one job. These are the things that shift it:

- Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.

- How much of the wrong fuel got in, compared with how much that tank can hold.

- Which went in: unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where your vehicle is, and if a technician can safely get to and work on it.

The car, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight instead of as a range.

For the vehicle at home that's going nowhere and isn't pressing, is fine too.

## Pen-y-fai motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

## Fuel drains on a Pen-y-fai petrol station forecourt

Yes, and it is where a large part of this work takes place.

Routinely, provided the site agrees: Welcome Break, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether our engineers can work in that location is something our technicians answer straight away.

## Is there a sensible amount of petrol in a diesel?

It hinges on the ratio rather than the litres, and far more on whether the motor has run.

A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different situations, of course. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is whether the fuel system has had that mixture pulled through it.

## Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What then?

Switch off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop.

It is recoverable much more often than people expect, even though driving is what takes the trouble from that tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A drain and flush carried out correctly isn't an alteration and does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty.

Another good reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

What petrol has diluted is not put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a separate issue. So no.

Later? Still petrol in your tank, and a pump that has to put up with the stuff.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

There's no need to bring it to a dealership, since we drain and clean the car wherever it is.

## Is the car still with you?

Do not turn your engine back on.

If you have already driven the car, pull over somewhere sensible, turn it off and keep it off.

Cold and still, a vehicle is in the best position available — and motorists fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.

At the roadside, on the forecourt or at home — on-site fuel draining in Pen-y-fai and across Bridgend.
