# Should You Worry? Petrol in a Diesel Car in Pengam

Probably less than you already are — as long as no one has started the car.

Everyone in Pengam starts with "have I wrecked it?", and the honest answer is generally no: petrol left inside that tank of any diesel stays harmless until priming, cranking or driving pulls it into the system.

Leave the motor off then ring Petrol in Diesel — that is how you keep it that way.

The remainder of this page sets out what petrol really does to a diesel, how to tell how far it has got, and how to make sure it does not happen to you a second time.

## Inside the motor: what petrol in a diesel really does

Passing through a motor, diesel does two things at once.

Before it combusts, it protects — and then it ignites.

What keeps the surfaces inside the high-pressure fuel pump and your injectors from wearing down against one another is your diesel passing through them — they are made to very fine tolerances.

The second job petrol doesn't do at all, and the first it does badly.

It is thinner than diesel and removes the lubrication the system hinges on, and so a pump running on a petrol blend is a pump wearing itself. And petrol is designed to resist igniting under compression, which is the reverse of what a diesel needs from its fuel. That is where the rattling comes from.

The shape of the issue is clear when you put those together.

It's movement that does the damage, not contact.

All a tank with petrol in it amounts to is a fuel issue.

The start of a mechanical one is a pump that has been labouring on that petrol — and whatever a worn pump sheds travels on with the fuel to the fuel injectors downstream.

## Pengam, petrol in a diesel: four situations, from mild to significant

Filled up, and never started: nothing beats it.

Only your tank has petrol in it, and so the job is emptying that tank and flushing your system where the car sits. This scenario can only truly happen at a forecourt: anywhere else, the car got there by being driven.

A brief spell of running, or just your ignition on.

With the fuel system primed, the lines and filter already hold petrol that has come from the tank.

That's generally still a straightforward job — a drain, a flush, and the filter seen to.

Those few miles on the road meant your pump labouring on fuel weakened by petrol the whole way.

How hard the vehicle was driven counts as much as how far, and this work takes in that tank, the lines, the filter and fresh fuel through the entire system.

On the school run to the local primary school, the mileage is short.

Very different once more: a trip to Cardiff, under 3 miles away, or any distance on the A48(M), under 3 miles from Pengam, where the engine never stopped running hard.

Knocking, an uneven idle, smoke, a throttle gone soft: driven till it complained.

The fuel isn't acting like diesel any more, and the motor is saying so.

Leave it wherever it has stopped: a lay-by, a quiet street, the verge on Rover Way.

What goes first is still the fuel drain and flush, and that takes care of it, with permanent damage very unusual if a car is stopped quickly.

## Stories Pengam people hear about petrol in a diesel

It will not be fine. The myth: "Fill it the rest of the way with diesel and it will be."

Nothing comes out when you top up — the tank just holds more of the same mixture.

Percentage is not how a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol, whatever that guidance assumes.

Myth: a modern diesel copes with a bit of petrol. Rather, the opposite.

At higher pressure, through finer parts: that's how a modern diesel handles its fuel, and so the lubrication counts for more, not less.

"It starts, it drives, and so no harm done" — the myth that catches more drivers than any other.

Feed diesel to a petrol motor and it usually won't run, and so the motorist stops — and the harm stops with them.

Feed petrol to a diesel and it generally fires up, idles and drives away like nothing happened — all while its pump is wearing.

Fine and running are not the same thing.

Myth: "Add some two-stroke oil and drive the vehicle home." It's an outdated workaround for a separate problem.

What petrol has weakened remains diluted, and the petrol remains inside that tank regardless.

Myth: "Drain the tank yourself and you are sorted." Once your engine has run, some of that petrol is no longer inside your tank: it is in the filter and your lines, and it goes right back through the pump at the next start.

It's also genuinely risky to drain petrol into a can by the kerbside.

## Why petrol in a diesel takes place at all

On purpose? Never. Through carelessness? Rarely, if ever.

A diesel nozzle mostly won't go into a petrol vehicle, but the slimmer petrol nozzle goes into the filler of a diesel almost without resistance — so forecourts make this one error straightforward, and just in one direction.

Habit and the car getting out of step is when it occurs.

Hire cars, courtesy cars, and motors that are new to you.

A household with one petrol and one diesel on the driveway.

The pumps in a different order on a well-known forecourt.

Filling up in a hurry on the way to Cardiff Queen Street, with a train to catch.

The first fill-up in a diesel Volkswagen Golf after years of driving petrol is precisely the moment it takes place.

With rain, a call arriving, or children to deal with, your hand simply does what it has always done.

## Next time you fill up in Pengam: preventing petrol in a diesel

- Not every forecourt in the UK keeps to green for unleaded and black for diesel, even if most generally do. Check the petrol pump's label; the colour is only a hint.

- Inspect the filler flap. Many vehicles state the fuel inside the flap or on the cap. Look at it on your first fill in any vehicle you do not know.

- One of each in the house? Mark the key to your diesel — a coloured fob, a sticker — because intending to remember is not enough.

- "Diesel", aloud, before you lift the nozzle — every time a new or hired car needs its first tank. It sounds silly. It works.

- Put the phone away. This is an easy mistake to make whilst you are thinking about something else.

- A misfuel inhibitor helps, up to a point. Some diesels come with a filler designed to reject a petrol nozzle, and add-on devices exist for motors without one. They are a safety net, not a reason to stop checking the pump.

- Less petrol makes a weaker mix, and so stop the moment you notice — while remembering that the next step is unchanged. It's still not to crank it.

## Pengam: already put petrol in a diesel?

Short and simple, then, is the order of things.

Don't turn your ignition on, and do not fire it up.

If you're still at the forecourt — Shell or anywhere else — ask the attendants to help you push the car clear of the petrol pump.

Next, 0333 366 0103. We will ask what went in, about how much, and if it's been run.

Corrosion and deposits form the issue with AdBlue, whereas petrol brings lost lubrication. So if it was AdBlue, say so — and see its own Pengam page.

## One petrol in a diesel task in Pengam costs more than another. Why?

Four different jobs sit behind the four scenarios above — which is why there's no fair single price.

The scenario itself does most of the work of moving the cost.

Where your car is counts too, and whether a technician can safely reach it, after the proportion of petrol to what that tank holds.

Before any quote, not after, come three questions: the fuel that got in, the volume, and if it has run. That is why.

Given those answers, you get a straight figure rather than a range.
