# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Penhill? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled vehicles where they stand, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, throughout Penhill and the rest of Wiltshire. The very first thing to do is not to turn on the motor. When the engine has not yet run and the petrol is still inside the tank, a tank drain is nearly always all it requires, and the coming few minutes settle that, not how much got in.

Our team can tell you what your next part is. Phone — that comes before everything else.

## The next five minutes: petrol in a diesel

- Do not start the vehicle. Turned on regardless? Then don't rely on it. Diesel in a petrol motor normally won't run, so the person stops and the harm stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It moves off normally, for several miles. Most people get that muddled. It's not all right — the fuel system is wearing down every mile you drive.

- Leave the car's ignition be as well. Diesel does two roles: it combusts, and before it ignites it protects the high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors. Petrol does the first and not the second. Flicking the ignition on is often all it takes to prime that system, which carries that petrol out of your tank then into exactly those parts.

- That advice supposes a diesel fuel system copes with petrol by percentage. It will not. Tip diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you get is a fuller tank of the same blend. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.

- Stay still if it's sensible to. Hazards on, ignition off, leave the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Potterdown Road, anywhere — an odd place for us is better than a started motor, and nothing is simpler for us to sort than a motor that never moved.

- Our van showing up instead of circling hinges on two things: a postcode starting SN2 5, and whatever is closest to you with a name on it. Keep both ready before you ring.

- Three answers decide your whole call-out: the liquid you poured in, the rough measure of it, and whether it has been running since. The line is 0333 366 0103.

## Forecourt draining for petrol in a diesel

Most of the work begins at a pump, so a fair chunk of it gets completed on site.

Our technicians work on petrol station forecourts regularly, with the site's agreement, and so if you're still at BP that is generally where the drain happens.

At the forecourt, the mistake gets spotted with your engine never fired, and nowhere else does that.

Everywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the car was started and driven to get there, which means fuel was drawn from your tank, through the fuel filter and into your high-pressure pump. That is not a disaster, and our technicians can still deal with it where it stands. It does mean your lines and the fuel filter need cleaning as well as that tank, and that's settled by the few seconds between seeing your receipt and reaching for your key.

Clear of the petrol pump, the next driver can get by — so yes, let the attendants help you push it. Well worth it.

Four vehicle lengths is not worth a start.

## Penhill plus the towns beside it

Groundwell, Kingsdown, Upper Stratton, Hyde, Abbey Meads — each of those on our journeys that take us across to Penhill too, a residential suburb.

There are separate pages for nearly all places in Wiltshire, and the ones listed above are simply the closest neighbours — so yours being left off this list means nothing about whether our technicians come.

Guessing is the thing to skip, particularly on the boundary or anywhere your satnav goes wrong. Call us and check.

The ground this page includes appears on the map.

We operate roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and at car parks across all of it, and your car doesn't need to come to us.

Put diesel in a petrol motor and usually it won't run, so the driver stops there and the wear stops with them. Flip it — petrol into a diesel — and the thing fires up, ticks over and drives off as though nothing had happened, whilst the high-pressure pump works without the protection your fuel is supposed to be giving. That's the catch, and it is why the diesel Nissan Qashqai will have felt entirely ordinary coming back from Seven Fields Primary School. They always do. From the driver's seat there's nothing to caution you about, so nothing alerts you. Ring us with approximately how far you travelled, and how hard; the second one matters more than the first.

## Penhill: broken down wherever you stopped

Not everyone gets a sensible spot to stop.

If you worked it out after setting off and finished up by the verge of Burbage Road, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazards on, that's a routine call for us rather than an odd one.

Out of the car when it isn't wise to wait in it, by it if it is.

Do not restart it to get to a nicer spot. It will go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging drags that blend deeper into your fuel system.

We will bring the van to a difficult location without any trouble, and for your car that is a lot better than driving on.

Risk the journey home from The Deers Leap? Don't. It will start and it will move off just fine, which is the trouble — a diesel on a thinned tank acts usually whilst grinding the parts your fuel should be lubricating. Park the Mercedes C-Class and phone.

## So you've run it? Petrol in a diesel after a couple of miles

Here is where the local M4 counts, under 5 miles away from Penhill.

It will often get you onto it, and some way along, before you feel a thing. Then it's some smoke, a rough idle and power falling away — not a neat stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Take the next exit that is safe, pull up there, and never restart the car to move it.

It changes what our technicians bring, and so say so when you phone: on a longer run — anything approaching the under 25 miles to the nearest city — assume the mixture has been through your filter, your pump and the injectors.

Nothing is getting worse whilst it waits. Whatever the diesel Dacia Duster did on the way to Nalgo Sports & Leisure, it is doing none of it now: your pump is not turning. So take your time — but never drive the car home to buy yourself any.

## A bit about Penhill

Penhill is a suburban area in Wiltshire, situated near the riverside and surrounded by nearby places such as Groundwell, Kingsdown, and Upper Stratton. Penhill has a population of approximately 6782 residents and is characterized by predominantly terraced housing. Penhill sits at an elevation of 125 metres, within the wider landscape of the South West region. Penhill is located 24.8 miles from Oxford and 71.2 miles from London.

## When our technicians reach you in Penhill: what happens

- Three things get checked before any quote — your fuel that was put in, the amount, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.

- We clear your tank of the contaminated mixture.

- Fuel lines are rinsed through and your filter cleared, leaving nothing in your system that created any of this.

- Bleeding the system follows, once clean diesel is in.

- Your engine is fired up and tested to be sure it runs smoothly on new diesel.

The vehicle is then ready for you to pull away.

We do all of this wherever the car has ended up, which means it never has to be taken to a garage, and when it has been caught soon, it is very rare for there to be lasting damage.

We clean the fuel lines instead of only draining your tank, and the reason is that diluted fuel has already reached the filter and your pump: it was a start and a drive, however short. The distance truly helps — pulled off the forecourt, receipt read, a diesel Audi A3 parked up near Penhill Library a couple of hundred yards later is about as well as this goes once your engine has turned. Phone us and leave it off.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Penhill is a different job

If what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the opening step is the same — don't fire it up — but this problem isn't.

Petrol dilutes the diesel and removes the protection your fuel system relies on.

Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that leads to corrosion and residue.

Both are ours. There is a separate Penhill page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

Switch off where you have stopped, and never restart it to find somewhere better — close to John Moulton Hall Community Centre or anywhere at all. Knocking, a ragged idle, white smoke and a limp throttle are a misfuelled diesel BMW 1 Series telling you what is wrong.

## What a petrol-in-diesel drain costs around Penhill

Our engineers can't put one price on this page truthfully, since the job is not one job. What changes it:

- Whether the engine has been started or driven. This is the main one.

- Wrong fuel in, against what that tank takes — that proportion.

- Which got in: petrol or AdBlue.

- Where your vehicle is, and whether a technician can safely get to and work on it.

A clear answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: the car, the quantity, and if it has run.

For the car at home that is going nowhere and isn't pressing, is fine too.

## Petrol in diesel queries from Penhill motorists

## Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Penhill?

Yes — forecourts are where a large portion of this takes place.

Tell us which one you're at when you ring and we'll tell you if our engineers can work there. With the site's consent we work at Asda and the other forecourts nearby all the time.

## Is there a sensible quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Litres aren't the measure. Ratio is, and much more than either, it matters if anything has been run.

What decides how much work is required is whether that mixture has been sucked through your fuel system — since although five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different situation from five in a full one, either way that is the question.

## I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Pull in somewhere safe, turn off, and keep it off.

It is fixable far more regularly than motorists assume, even though driving is what moves the issue from that tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart it.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A drain and flush carried out properly is not a change and does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty.

Another good reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

What petrol has weakened isn't replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a different issue. So no.

Petrol remains in that tank after that, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no respite from it.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Not at all. Our technicians drain and flush the car wherever it is, so there's no need to bring it to a dealership.

## You, and the vehicle, still together?

The engine remains off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, turn off, and no restarting the car afterwards.

A parked, cold motor is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from much more commonly than people assume.
