# Pensarn: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled vehicles where they stand, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, all over Pensarn and the remainder of Conwy. The first thing to do is not to start your engine. When the engine has not been started and the petrol is still inside that tank, a tank drain is almost always all it needs, and the coming few minutes determine that, not how much got in.

Call us before all else starts, so you will learn what follows from there.

## The next five steps: petrol in a diesel

- Give a petrol motor diesel and it will usually refuse to run at all, so the person stops there and so does the wear. Give a diesel petrol and the car starts, it idles, it drives off — fine enough for a few miles. People have that reversed, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So do not start the car. And once started, do not depend on it: the fuel system is wearing down while you drive.

- Two tasks, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps your injection pump and injectors protected. Petrol only handles the one. That is why the car's ignition remains off also — turn it on and you usually prime that system, and that's petrol exiting that tank for precisely those parts.

- That guidance supposes a diesel fuel system accepts petrol by percentage. It does not. Add diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you have is a larger tank of the same mixture. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.

- Wait where you are if you safely can. A vehicle that has not shifted is the easiest one to sort, and our team would rather come to a tricky spot than have it started. If you're pulled up on the verge on Marine Road, put those hazards on and leave it there.

- Keep your location prepared before you phone. A postcode beginning LL22 7 and whatever is next to you with a sign on it is the difference between our van showing up and the van circling.

- What got in, about how many litres, and if the car has fired — these three replies settle the whole call-out. Dial 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

The drive back would about double it, for no purpose at all. One commute has already forced a real volume of petrol-thinned diesel through your high-pressure pump of your Renault Clio. So keep the vehicle where it stands. Ring us from the platform if that is simpler — nobody needs you hovering over your car at Abergele & Pensarn whilst our technicians work, and tonight trumps finding out on Monday.

## Forecourt drains for petrol in a diesel

The work kicks off at a forecourt, typically. Regularly it wraps up at one as well.

The drain typically happens on the spot. Still on the forecourt at Shell? Given the site's agreement, that is somewhere our engineers work, and routinely.

Nowhere but a forecourt can it be stopped with the engine still untouched.

The few seconds between checking the till receipt and reaching for the key determine how much requires cleaning. Anywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the car was switched on and driven to get there, so fuel was pulled from the tank, through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure pump. That means the fuel lines and the fuel filter need rinsing as well as your tank. It's not a disaster, and our technicians can still deal with it where the car is.

Out from the petrol pump, the next motorist can get past — so yes, let the staff help you move the car. Worth doing.

Four vehicle lengths isn't worth a start.

Car parks like the one at Co-op Food are a place our technicians work in all the time, and the fuel is rarely the difficult part. The bay is: cars either side, a trolley shelter behind, at times a height bar on the way in that determines if our van can access you at all. So tell us how boxed in you are when you phone, and which way your car is pointing. When our engineers cannot work beside your diesel Volkswagen Tiguan we will shift the vehicle without firing it — and that isn't pedantry about a few seconds of running. Every start primes your fuel system and sucks more of the mixture out of that tank and towards the pump, so a motor shunted twice into a better spot has silently grown into a harder job than one left just where it stopped.

## Pensarn plus the villages near it

Being a coastal village, Pensarn gets a routine visit, and the places close by go along on the same journey: Belgrano and Abergele, Towyn and Terfyn, St George.

Not on this list? That says nothing. The names above are only the closest few, and the majority of locations around Conwy have a page of their own somewhere on our site.

Presuming is the habit to avoid, particularly on the border or somewhere the satnav gets lost. Ring us and enquire.

This map is the area the page covers.

Roadside, forecourt, private drive, car park: every bit of it is ground our technicians cover, and none of it requires your vehicle to come to us.

A diesel pump supplies fuel on demand, and a frantic morning run demands plenty — so three miles in your Skoda Octavia feels like nothing and is not. Twenty to nine outside the local primary school, already late, the receipt in your hand showing unleaded: hazards on, motor off, phone.

## Pensarn: stranded wherever you stopped

Not everybody gets the chance to pull over somewhere suitable.

Set off, then twigged? Finished up on the verge of Duck Lane, or parked in some lay-by with your hazards on? That is a common call here. Not a rare one.

Sit with the motor if it is safe to sit in it, yet out of the car when it is not.

Never start it up to get to a safer place. It will go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls that mix deeper into the fuel system.

A van coming to an awkward place is no problem for us, and it's a lot better for your car than driving on.

## A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?

Here is where the local Moreton Spur comes in — under 25 miles from Pensarn.

A misfuelled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong, and the signs when they appear are normally a drop in power, a lumpy idle and some smoke instead of a clean stop.

Pull off at the next safe junction, turn off, and do not restart it to reposition.

Suppose the worst of it on a long run. Anything near the under 10 miles to the nearest city, and the mixture has been through the filter, through your pump, through your injectors. Tell us when you phone. What our technicians bring alters.

Fine on the way out, flat on the way back. If that is how the drive to Pentre Mawr went, your tank is the place to look. Petrol thins diesel, and weaker fuel seeps past the tightly fitted components that are meant to build injection pressure — so the further the Audi A4 travelled, the less well it held that pressure. Stop somewhere safe, switch off and phone us.

## Where is Pensarn?

Pensarn is a coastal village in Conwy, situated near the towns of Abergele and Towyn, with Belgrano to the east. Pensarn has a population of around 1576 people and is characterized by predominantly detached housing. Pensarn sits at a low elevation of 6 metres above sea level, close to the Irish Sea coast. Pensarn is located near the city of St Asaph, which is 6.1 miles away.

## Once our technicians reach you around Pensarn: what happens

- Three things get established before any price — your fuel that got in, the quantity, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.

- The polluted fuel comes out of your tank.

- What is remaining in the system shouldn't be what started the problem, and so your fuel lines get cleaned and the filter cleaned.

- The fuel system gets primed, on clean diesel.

- When it's started, our engineers confirm it runs correctly on new diesel.

That has your car ready to set off.

There is no need to go to a garage at any stage, since the work is all done where the vehicle is, and when it is noticed early, permanent damage is very unusual.

About as well as this goes, once the motor has turned: away from the pumps, receipt read, and the diesel Mercedes E-Class left close to Canolfan Dewi Sant Centre scarcely two streets on. Ring us, and leave it off. A short hop does genuinely help. It was still a start and still a drive, though, so the fuel filter and your pump have had diluted fuel through them — hence rinsing the lines instead of only clearing your tank.

## A distinct problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Pensarn

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening step is unchanged — the motor remains off — whereas this problem underneath it is a distinct one altogether.

Thinned diesel, and no protection left for the fuel system that depends on it. That's petrol.

Corrosion and residue are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, since AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

AdBlue removal in Pensarn has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it is frequently the more serious of the two. We cover both.

## Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel drain in Pensarn

What moves the figure is listed below, since this job isn't one job and our technicians cannot truthfully put a single figure on this page.

- Whether the engine has been run or driven. This is the main one.

- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, weighed against how much your tank takes.

- Which was put in: unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where the car is, and if a van can sensibly get to and work on it.

A clear answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: the vehicle, the quantity, and if it has run.

Not pressing, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

## Petrol in diesel questions from Pensarn drivers

## I'm on a forecourt in Pensarn. Can you drain the car on the spot?

Plenty of what our engineers do happens nowhere else. So yes.

Tell us which one you are at when you phone and we will tell you if we can work there. With the site's consent our technicians attend Asda and the other forecourts locally routinely.

## Is there a sensible quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Ratio settles it instead of litres — and more than either, whether the engine has run.

Five litres into a nearly dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mix been pulled right through, or has it not?

## Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What then?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that.

Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does move the issue out of your tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it remains fixable far more often than drivers fear.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A drain and flush carried out correctly isn't a change and does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty.

What is likelier to start a dispute is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the engine to remain off.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. It belongs to a separate fault from a bygone era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind puts back.

Petrol stays in that tank later on, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no respite from it.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Not at all. We drain and flush the car wherever it is, so there's no need to bring it to a dealership.

## Is the car still with you?

Never switch it back on.

If you have already driven it, pull over somewhere safe, switch it off then leave it off.

Cold and parked, a vehicle is in the best place available — and motorists fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.

On-site fuel draining around Pensarn and throughout Conwy — at the kerbside, on the forecourt or at home.
