# Pentyrch: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

If you have not started your engine yet, do not. A fuel drain and nothing more is almost always what a motor needs while the fuel is still inside that tank and the motor has not yet run, which is why it is the following few minutes that matter, not how much got in. Petrol in Diesel comes to your car wherever it has come to rest in Pentyrch or the rest of Cardiff, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, and drains and cleans it there.

Call us and then we shall tell you what follows after that before you attempt any more.

## What to do first about petrol in a diesel

- Do not crank it — and don't trust it when it fires up. This is the bit drivers have wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol engine given diesel generally just cannot run, so the motorist stops and the wear halts with them. A diesel given petrol usually starts, ticks over and pulls away without complaint for a couple of miles. It isn't all right. It is wearing out your fuel system whenever you drive.

- Leave the car's ignition alone also. Diesel performs two roles: it burns, and before it combusts it lubricates the high-pressure pump and its injectors. Petrol does the first and not the second. Turning the car's ignition on is usually sufficient to prime that system, which draws this petrol out of your tank then into precisely those parts.

- Don't weaken it. Diesel put on top removes nothing, so all you get is more of what was already there, since percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system copes with petrol. Super unleaded? Simply petrol. The type makes no difference.

- Stay still if it's safe to. Hazards on, motor off, leave it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Caerau Lane, anywhere — a tricky place for us trumps a started engine, and nothing is easier for us to handle than a vehicle that never shifted.

- Before you call, have your whereabouts. Anything closest to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode that starts CF15 9 — that is what determines whether our van arrives or circles.

- Phone 0333 366 0103. Expect three points — what went in, roughly how much, and whether your car has been run. Those responses settle all that follows.

Quarter past eight, a quick fill on the trip in, and you realise at about eleven — by then the diesel Volkswagen Passat has been sitting outside Taffs Well for three hours. Phone then keep the car just where it sits. The trip in is the bit that is key now, since diesel does two jobs on its way through an engine: it ignites, and before it burns it greases the injection pump and its injectors. Petrol handles the first and not the second. So those few miles were covered with the pump running on a liquid that had lost much of the protection it is built around — which is why the question our engineers ask is how many miles you travelled, not how long your motor has been standing.

## Can petrol be drained from your diesel at the forecourt?

The job kicks off at the pump, generally. Frequently the job ends there too.

If you are still on the forecourt at BP, that's generally where the drain gets done — we work on station forecourts regularly, with the site's agreement.

Nowhere else but the forecourt can the mistake be halted with the engine still unrun.

Fuel sucked out of your tank and through the fuel filter, all the way to your high-pressure pump, is what happens when your engine is started and your car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush covers the fuel filter and the fuel lines as well as the tank. That's still not a disaster, and our technicians sort it out where your car sits. What decides it is whether the key was reached for in the seconds after your receipt was read.

Staff will normally help out pushing it out from the petrol pump, which lets the next motorist get by. Take the assistance.

Starting the car just to roll four vehicle lengths is not.

## Can our engineers reach your corner of Pentyrch?

As a rural village, Pentyrch sees a steady visit, and its neighbours close by come with it on that same run: Pen-y-garn and Soar, Capel Llanilltern and Rhydlafr, Morganstown.

Not on that list? That tells you nothing. The places above are just the closest few, and the majority of places across Cardiff have a page of their own elsewhere on our site.

Presuming is the mistake to skip, particularly on a boundary or somewhere the satnav fails. Phone and check.

The map marks the ground the page spans.

Kerbside, forecourt, private drive, car park: all of it is territory our technicians serve, and none of that needs the car to come to us.

## Pentyrch: broken down where you parked

Some drivers find no safe spot to pull over at all.

If you noticed after setting off and landed along the verge on Heol y Pentre, or at a lay-by somewhere with your hazards on, that is a normal call for us and not an odd one.

Safe where you are? Wait beside it. Not okay? Get out and clear of it.

Don't start it up to get to a nicer place. It will go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging draws that blend deeper into the fuel system.

However tricky the place, it is no problem for us to come to it, and that is much better for the vehicle than pressing on.

Never risk it. The drive home from The Kings Arms is perfectly possible, which is precisely the trouble — a diluted tank does not stop a diesel starting or pulling away, it just wears the components the fuel is meant to protect. Phone us, and let the Nissan Qashqai stay where it is.

## Petrol in a diesel, but the vehicle has rolled

Your M4 is the road which counts now, and sits under a mile from Pentyrch.

A misfilled diesel will usually get you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong, while the symptoms when they appear are typically lost power, an uneven idle and smoke instead of a clean stop.

The first sensible exit is the one to take. Turn off there, then leave the restarting alone.

Long run? Anything near the under 10 miles to the closest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that reached by the mixture. Say that on the phone, since it alters what goes in our van.

Nothing is getting worse while it stands. Whatever your diesel Dacia Duster did on the way to Memorial Park, it's doing none of it now: the pump isn't turning. So take your time — but do not drive the vehicle home to buy yourself any.

## Pentyrch itself

Pentyrch is a small village located inland in Cardiff, sitting at an elevation of around 140 metres and approximately 6 miles from the city centre. Pentyrch is characterised by its predominantly detached housing stock and is surrounded by nearby places such as Pen-y-garn, Soar, and Capel Llanilltern. Pentyrch has a population of around 998 residents and is situated near the Welsh capital, but still maintains a distinct village identity.

## What we do when our engineers arrive with you around Pentyrch

- Three things get established before any quote — your fuel that got in, the quantity, and if anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.

- That tank gets emptied completely.

- Our engineers flush your fuel lines and clean the fuel filter, and so what's left in the fuel system isn't what created the problem.

- Your system gets bled, on fresh diesel.

- When it's started, we confirm it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

The car is then ready for you to pull away.

Our technicians do everything wherever the car has come to a stop, which means it never needs to go to a workshop, and when it has been caught quickly, it's very unusual for there to be permanent damage.

Our engineers flush the fuel lines rather than only emptying that tank, and the reason is that weakened fuel has already reached the fuel filter and the pump: it was a start and a drive, however short. The distance truly assists — pulled off the forecourt, receipt read, a diesel Peugeot 3008 parked up by St. Catwg's a couple of hundred yards later is about as well as this goes once your engine has turned. Ring us and leave it off.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Pentyrch is a distinct job

Don't crank it: that opening instruction holds whether what was put in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is this fault itself.

Thinned diesel, and no lubrication left for your fuel system that depends on it. That's petrol.

AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it brings corrosion and deposits instead.

Often the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the full story sits on its own Pentyrch page. Both are ours to handle.

The smaller petrol nozzle fits a modern diesel filler neck with almost no resistance at all, which makes this mechanical rather than slapdash. Strange spots see most of it for that reason. So: fuelled up close to Llan Colliery without thinking, in a diesel Vauxhall Astra you have had for two days? Ring us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars often get driven further before anyone realises, and miles decides how much petrol ends up at your injectors.

## What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost in Pentyrch

One price would not be fair here, because this is not one job. These are the things that move it:

- This is the key one: whether the motor has been run, or driven.

- Wrong fuel in, against what that tank takes — that ratio.

- Which got in: unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where the vehicle is, and if our van can sensibly get to and work on it.

Tell us the car, the amount and whether it has run, and you will get a firm answer rather than a range.

Not time-critical, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

## Petrol in diesel: common questions around Pentyrch

## At a petrol station around Pentyrch, can you do a fuel drain there?

Much of what our technicians do takes place nowhere else. So yes.

Tell us which one you are at when you phone and we'll tell you if our technicians can work there. With the owner's consent our technicians work at Asda and the other forecourts around town regularly.

## Is there a sensible quantity of petrol in a diesel?

It hinges on the ratio instead of the litres, and far more on whether the engine has run.

Five litres into an almost dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mixture been pulled right through, or has it not?

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Pull in somewhere safe, switch off, and leave the vehicle off.

Driving shifts the problem along — out of your tank, into your pump and injectors. People fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one truly helpful thing left to you is not restarting the vehicle.

## Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

It's not a change, so a drain then flush carried out correctly does not void a manufacturer's warranty.

An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

Two-stroke oil solves a separate problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No.

Later on? Still petrol in that tank, and a pump that has to cope with the stuff.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Wherever your car is, our engineers drain and flush it there, so a drive to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

## You, and your vehicle, still together?

Leave the engine switched off.

Already driven it? Then pull in somewhere safe, switch off, then let the car stay that way.

Cold and still, a vehicle is in the best position available — and drivers fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.

Across Cardiff and in Pentyrch: call-out fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the kerbside.
