# Pillwell: Petrol in a Diesel Car? Here Is What Happens

Whatever you do, never switch your engine on, even briefly, to shift it. Stop; leave it off.

Drained and rinsed, just where it sits: that's generally all an unrun diesel with petrol in it needs. Whether it stays that simple rests on the minutes ahead far more than on everything else.

From here on, in order, wherever you are in Pillwell:

## Minute one: petrol in a diesel, engine off

Before anything else, these — following this sequence.

- The keys out of your ignition. Switching your ignition on can be all it takes to prime the fuel system, while priming draws petrol out of the tank toward the parts it harms. Leave the vehicle off altogether.

- Don't top it up with diesel. Adding diesel takes out nothing. You end up with a fuller tank of the same mixture.

- Hazard lights on. If you're anywhere close to moving traffic, make the car easy to see before you do anything else.

- Off the petrol pump by hand. At a forecourt, get the staff to help you roll the vehicle away from the petrol pump. Do not fire it up to shift it, however short the way.

- Hold on to your receipt. It shows which fuel went in plus roughly how much, which is the first thing we'll ask.

If you were still driving when you noticed, stop somewhere safe rather than pushing on for the services — on the M5, under 50 miles from Pillwell, that means the next exit. Stage one follows.

## Pillwell fuel drain: has your engine run yet, or not?

One answer is what everything after this point depends on.

If your engine hasn't run at all:

- Nowhere but that tank: that's where that petrol yet is.

- The work is a drain and a flush, usually done where the vehicle is.

- Stage one matters for exactly this reason: it is the best position to be in.

Run at all, even for a second:

- Some petrol has left your tank by now, passed through the filter, and reached your lines.

- Run it farther and that petrol reaches your injectors, having gone through your fuel pump first.

- Lines flushed, your filter dealt with, occasionally more: the job expands as the miles does.

The reason the line falls there: diesel protects the high-pressure pump and the injectors as it flows through them, and petrol does not.

In that tank, sitting still, petrol harms nothing.

Pump the petrol, though, and it grinds down the very parts doing the moving.

## What to have ready when you call about petrol in a diesel from Pillwell

Prepare a little, and the technician finds you rather than circling.

- The ideal start is a postcode — one starting DT10 1 — for where you are.

- A road name is a help: Plowman Close, say, or whichever street you have stopped in. A car park does the trick too.

- What a car park serves is the easiest way to find it, and so mention the landmark — like the one at Co-op Food.

- Tell us what your car is — make, model — and confirm it's diesel.

- Which got in matters: AdBlue is a separate job from petrol, plus Pillwell has a page just for that. So say.

- The quantity: the receipt's litres, or otherwise how long you had the nozzle in.

- If it has run, how far and how hard — and whether it's run at all.

- Sort who owns the vehicle ahead of when we get there: some hire or company contracts want the owner to approve the work, and that is faster beforehand.

Then phone 0333 366 0103. If it can wait — the vehicle is at home with going nowhere — works as well.

## Waiting for a fuel drain around Pillwell: what to do

Help, however well meant, is the thing that does the damage whilst you wait. So stick to these.

- Where your car has stopped settles where you wait. Somewhere exposed: away from it, away from the traffic. Safe: with it. Either way, safety ahead of the vehicle.

- Nobody — however helpful — starts it, whether to see if it runs or to shift the car a short way.

- Something from your boot, oil made for two-strokes or injector cleaner: no additive removes that petrol.

- Siphoning petrol into a can at the kerbside is dangerous — and it also leaves whatever fuel has already gone beyond the tank. Do not drain the vehicle yourself.

- Ignition stays off. Even for your radio or the windows.

## Van arrived? Your fuel drain, one stage at a time

- Fuel, quantity, whether it's run: those replies decide the job, and that's why you get a quote after them instead of before.

- Out of that tank comes the contaminated blend: your tank is drained.

- The fuel lines are rinsed. If it ran, the petrol has moved beyond your tank, and the lines are carrying it.

- The filter is dealt with. Cleared, or changed where the vehicle has a workable one.

- Clean diesel in, and your system primed.

- Our technicians start the car only after new diesel has gone in and bled the fuel system, then confirm that it is running smoothly.

Our engineers remain until it's running on fresh diesel.

The vehicle goes back to normal driving at once, and permanent damage is very uncommon if it has been spotted quickly.

## Once the fuel drain is done: driving around Pillwell a second time

- Nothing special is needed after a start with clean diesel — normal driving will do.

- Give the first miles your attention. Smoke appearing, a warning light coming on, your idle going lumpy or your throttle stumbling: pull over and ring us back.

- An insurer, a fleet manager or a hire company may ask what was done, and so keep your documents.

- Next time, check the petrol pump. The label, not the colour of its handle.
