# Pincock: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

If you have not started the engine yet, don't. A fuel drain and nothing more is nearly always what a vehicle needs while the fuel is still inside your tank and the engine has not been started, which is why it's the next few minutes that matter, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel travels to the car wherever it has come to rest in Pincock or the remainder of Lancashire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, and drains and cleans it there.

Phone before anything else starts, and you will know what comes after that.

## What to do now about petrol in a diesel

- Don't start the car — and do not believe it if it does start. Here is the thing most people have wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol motor fed diesel usually just cannot run, and so the motorist stops and the harm stops with them. A diesel fed petrol usually starts, idles and pulls away just fine for a couple of miles. It is not fine. It is wearing out the fuel system while you drive.

- Two jobs, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps your high-pressure pump and injectors lubricated. Petrol only does the one. Which is why the ignition remains off too — flick it on and you commonly prime your system, and that's petrol leaving your tank for precisely those parts.

- Do not weaken it. Diesel poured on top clears nothing, so all you get is more of what was already there, since percentage is not how a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The type makes no difference.

- Remain where you are if you reasonably can. A car that has not shifted is the easiest one to deal with, and we'd rather travel to a tricky place than have it started. If you're parked on the verge on Hillside Close, switch your hazards on and keep the car there.

- The van turning up rather than circling turns on two things: a postcode that starts PR7 6, and whatever is closest to you with a name on it. Have both ready before you call.

- Three facts settle the entire call-out: the liquid you tipped in, the ballpark volume involved, plus if it has been going since. The number is 0333 366 0103.

## On a forecourt: draining petrol from a diesel

Pumps are where the work mostly kicks off, and where a fair chunk of that ends.

The drain typically happens there and then. Still on the forecourt at Tesco? Given the site's permission, that's a spot our engineers work, and routinely.

Before the engine has run — the forecourt is the one place the mistake is caught.

Our engineers can still sort it out where it stands, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, the car has been started and moved there, and that pulled fuel through the filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump, all the way from that tank. None of that is a catastrophe, but the flush then has to go past the tank to the lines and the filter, and the few seconds between seeing your receipt and reaching for the keys are what determine that.

Staff will generally pitch in pushing it away from the petrol pump, which lets the next driver get past. Accept the offer.

Starting it for four vehicle lengths? No.

## Coverage near Pincock

Pincock is a village, and our vans go out to the town and to the places by it on those same runs: Bolton Green, Charnock Green, Euxton, Astley Village and Runshaw Moor.

We do come. The places above are just the immediate neighbours, and a page is there for most locations around Lancashire, and so an absence from the list isn't an absence from our coverage.

Near a border, or anywhere the satnav struggles with? Call us and check rather than presuming.

The patch the page spans is on this map.

The car doesn't need to travel to us. Our technicians work over the lot — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

## Pincock: stuck where you parked

Not everyone finds a suitable place to stop.

A common call for us instead of an unusual one: realised after setting off, finished up on the verge on Wigan Road or at a lay-by with the hazard lights on.

Stay with the car while it's safe to sit inside, and clear of it if it's not.

Don't start it up to get to a nicer spot. It'll go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls that mix deeper into the fuel system.

Driving on does the car far more harm than our van heading out to an inconvenient location, and that is no trouble for us.

Your Audi A3 stays where it is in the car park outside Euxton Mills for the whole job, which typically runs like this. First we ask what was put in, approximately how much, and whether the engine has run since, because much of the work rests on those answers. The tank is emptied of the contaminated blend, the lines are cleaned, and the filter comes off if it is a replaceable one. With new diesel in and the system primed, the car is fired up and checked, and once it's running properly you set off.

## So you've run it? Petrol in a diesel over a couple of miles

Your M6 is the one which matters now, and sits under a mile from Pincock.

A misfuelled diesel will usually get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong, while the signs when they arrive are normally a loss of power, a lumpy idle and smoke rather than a clean stop.

Take the next exit that's safe, stop there, and don't start the vehicle to move it.

It changes what our technicians bring, and so mention it when you ring: on a longer drive — anything near the under 10 miles to the closest city — take it the mixture has been through the filter, your pump and your injectors.

Happy on the way out, sluggish on the way back. If that's how the trip to The Geoff Witts Millenium Green went, that tank is where to look. Petrol weakens diesel, and runnier fuel leaks past the tightly fitted parts that are supposed to build injection pressure — so the farther the Vauxhall Astra went, the less well it held that pressure. Stop somewhere sensible, turn off and call us.

## A bit about Pincock

Pincock is a village in Lancashire, situated on the riverside at an elevation of 49 metres, with semi-detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation. Pincock lies approximately 7 miles from Preston and is surrounded by nearby places such as Bolton Green, Charnock Green, and Euxton. Pincock has a population of around 1093 residents and is located in the North West region of England, about 183 miles from London. Pincock's riverside setting provides a unique character to the village.

## What follows when we get to you around Pincock

- Three things get asked before any quote — your fuel that got in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.

- Our engineers drain your tank of all the tainted mixture.

- Our technicians purge the lines and clear the fuel filter, and so what's remaining in your system is not what caused the trouble.

- The fuel system gets primed, on clean diesel.

- The engine is fired up and tested to be sure it runs properly on clean diesel.

That leaves the car ready to drive away.

Permanent damage is very rare when it has been spotted soon, and since all of this is done where your car is, it never needs to go to a garage.

Seldom the issue, the place. On-street is the usual location we work, and a cramped parking bay is far preferable to a car that has been driven somewhere more handy. What does help, when you call from near Euxton Parish Church, is three things: the side the filler is on, whether our van can stand alongside without blocking the road, and whether anything has run since you filled up. Then the Ford Kuga gets drained, the fuel filter changed where a usable one exists, your lines flushed and clean fuel put through the entire circuit — as by now the worst of it is in the lines, not that tank.

## Pincock AdBlue removal is a distinct problem

If what went in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the first step is unchanged — don't fire it up — but the problem is not.

Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and takes away the protection the system depends on.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it brings corrosion and residue in its place.

Both are ours. There's a separate Pincock page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

Hire car or company car? Call them before you call us — some agreements want the hire firm to authorise the work, and sorting that out first is a great deal faster than sorting it after that. Then call us about the Volvo XC60 close to Euxton Parish Church Gate, and do not worry that you can't say how full your tank was. Nearly nobody can, in a vehicle they collected two days ago, and our engineers work it out there. The reason our technicians ask is that petrol in a diesel does its harm as a share: the same few litres in a nearly empty tank is a far stronger mix than in a full one. Petrol is rated on how well it withstands igniting under pressure, which is the opposite of what a diesel needs — so the stronger that mixture, the more it rattles, smokes and goes flat.

## What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain costs in Pincock

What moves the figure is set out below, because this job is not one job and our engineers can't honestly put a single price on this page.

- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.

- AdBlue or petrol, whichever was put in.

- Access: the vehicle's position, and if working on it there's safe for a technician.

The vehicle, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back clear rather than as a range.

Not pressing, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

Drain it and put fresh diesel in — that is the tip you'll get, normally from someone certain, and it's half true. Do precisely that to a diesel Peugeot 2008 close to Yarrow Valley Country Park and it would start, which is what makes the advice sound reasonable. What takes place next is the issue: your engine straight away pulls the petrol left sitting in your filter and the feed lines straight back through the pump, because emptying a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Phone us instead. Our technicians flush your system and take the filter off where the vehicle has a workable one, which is the difference between your car being fixed and your car only starting.

## Petrol in diesel questions from Pincock motorists

## Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Pincock?

Much of what we do gets done nowhere else. So yes.

Tell us which one you're at when you ring and we'll tell you whether we can work there. With the station's permission our technicians work at Asda and the other forecourts around town all the time.

## Is there a sensible quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Litres aren't the measure. Proportion is, and much more than either, it matters if anything has been run.

What determines how much work is required is if that blend has been pulled through the fuel system — because though five litres in an almost empty tank is a different situation from five in a full one, either way that's the query.

## I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Pull in somewhere safe, turn off, then leave the vehicle off.

Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does move the issue out of your tank and into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays recoverable much more often than people assume.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

No. Carried out correctly, emptying and flushing is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it.

Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one, which is another good reason to leave the car turned off.

## Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

Two-stroke oil solves a different problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No.

The tank still has petrol in it later on, and your pump still has to cope with it.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

No. We drain and clean your car wherever it is, so there is no need to bring it to a dealership.

## You, and the car, still together?

Never turn the car on again.

Already driven it? Then stop somewhere sensible, turn off, and let the vehicle stay that way.

This is recoverable from much more often than people fear, and a still, cold car is the best place to be in.
