# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Pinley? Don't Start It

Never fire up your engine. If the petrol is still sitting in the tank and the engine has not yet turned over, a tank drain is nearly always all it needs — and that's determined in the following few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled vehicles where they are, all over Pinley and the rest of West Midlands, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway.

Contact us and our engineers will show you what comes next before you attempt much else.

## What to do now about petrol in a diesel

- Do not crank it — and never depend on it when it fires up. That is the thing people get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol motor fed diesel usually just won't run, so the driver stops and the damage stops with them. A diesel fed petrol usually starts, ticks over and moves off just fine for a few miles. It is not okay. It is wearing your fuel system as you drive.

- Leave your ignition off as well. Diesel does two jobs: it burns, and before it combusts it greases that high-pressure fuel pump and its injectors. Petrol handles the first but not the second. Switching your ignition on is frequently enough to prime that system, which carries that petrol out of the tank then into just those components.

- Topping up takes out nothing. It hands you a bigger tank of the same mixture, since a diesel fuel system does not tolerate petrol by percentage in the way that guidance presumes — so don't add diesel on top to weaken it. Grade is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.

- Our team would rather get to a tricky spot than have it started — so if you reasonably can, stay put. Nothing is easier to deal with than a motor that hasn't shifted. On the verge on London Road, that means hazards on and leave it.

- Before you phone, get your position. Anything next to you with a name on it, plus a postcode that starts CV3 4 — that is what settles whether the van turns up or circles.

- Three facts settle your whole visit: the stuff you poured in, the rough volume of it, plus if anything has been turning since. Our line is 0333 366 0103.

Don't run it home. Petrol-thinned diesel has gone through the high-pressure fuel pump in real quantity on the drive in, and the drive back would about double that for nothing at all. Phone us — the platform is fine. There is no need to stand over that Ford Focus at Coventry whilst the work gets done, and we would very much rather speak to you tonight than realise on Monday.

## Can petrol be drained out of a diesel on a forecourt?

The work kicks off at the pump, usually. Regularly the work finishes there as well.

If you are still at the forecourt at Asda, that's normally where this drain takes place — our technicians work on petrol station forecourts all the time, with the owner's consent.

Before your engine has run — a forecourt is the only setting it ends up halted.

Anywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — your car was fired up and moved to get there, which means fuel was pulled from that tank, through your filter and into your high-pressure pump. That's not a catastrophe, and we can still put it right where it sits. It does mean the fuel lines and your filter need cleaning as well as the tank, and that is settled by the few seconds between reading the receipt and going for the key.

Roll it out of the way if the staff offer, and they usually will. The next driver gets through the pump, and that is worth doing.

Four car lengths is not worth the risk.

The tricky part is that bay, not the fuel. Cars either side of you, a trolley shelter behind, and occasionally a height bar on the way in that determines whether a technician can get to you at all — so when you phone from a car park like the one at Asda, tell us how much room there is about you and which way round the car is. Those we visit frequently. Should there be no space to work next to the diesel Mercedes C-Class, it gets moved with your engine off, and not out of fussiness over a handful of seconds of running: priming occurs at every start, more of the mix departs your tank for your pump, and two shunts into a nicer bay have quietly made a bigger job of what was simply a motor sitting still.

## Coverage around Pinley

Those same journeys get us to Whitley, Pinley Gardens, Stoke Aldermoor, Willenhall and Lower Stoke besides Pinley, which is a residential suburb.

Not on this list? That says nothing. The places above are only the closest few, and nearly all towns in West Midlands have a page of their own elsewhere on our site.

Presuming is the thing to resist, above all on a boundary or somewhere the satnav fails. Ring us and enquire.

The ground this page includes is on the map.

All of that is territory our technicians cover: a kerbside, a forecourt, a driveway, a car park. You don't move your car anywhere.

## Pinley: stranded where you pulled up

Not everybody has a chance to pull in anywhere suitable.

A common call for us and not a rare one: noticed after setting off, landed on the verge on Burnham Road or in a lay-by with your hazards on.

Okay right there? Remain with it. Not safe? Step out and away from it.

Do not start it up to reach a nicer place. It will go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging draws the mixture deeper into the system.

We'll take the van to an awkward location without any fuss, and for the car that's far better than pressing on.

## Already driven it? Petrol in a diesel after a few miles

The local M69 is the one which matters now, and it lies under 5 miles from Pinley.

A wrongly fuelled diesel will usually take you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong, and the signs when they come are normally a drop in power, an uneven idle and smoke rather than a neat stop.

Don't restart it to reposition. Pull off at the first sensible exit then turn off.

Long drive? Anything close to the under 3 miles to the closest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it reached by the contamination. Say that on the phone, because it affects what goes in the van.

Diesel has to be viscous enough to seal the tightly fitted parts it runs through, and petrol dilutes it. That is the whole process, and it explains the normal Whitley Grove call: a diesel Vauxhall Astra that travelled out there without fuss and came back down on power, rough at idle, perhaps smoking a little. A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically — it needs your fuel to hold pressure, not merely to burn — so when your fuel dilutes, pressure that should build and stay built starts leaking past tolerances instead, and the motor gets a weaker, later, less even delivery than it was built around. No part of that is your engine failing, which is the part worth hearing: it is your fuel no longer behaving like diesel, and it stops when your fuel is corrected.

## A bit about Pinley

Pinley is a suburban area located on the riverside in the West Midlands, with an elevation of 79 metres. Pinley sits close to the city of Coventry, approximately 1.7 miles away, and is near other local places such as Whitley and Stoke Aldermoor. Pinley has a population of around 2967 people and is characterised by predominantly terraced housing. Pinley is situated about 83.8 miles northwest of London.

## What our technicians do when our engineers arrive with you in Pinley

- Three things get asked before any quote — your fuel that went in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.

- That tank is cleared completely.

- Our technicians clean the fuel lines and clear your filter, and so what's left in your system is not what caused the trouble.

- The system gets primed, on fresh diesel.

- After it is turned on, our engineers confirm it runs properly on clean diesel.

From that point, you are ready to drive away.

Our technicians do everything wherever the car has stopped, which means it never has to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been spotted early, it's very rare for there to be lasting damage.

Off the forecourt, receipt read, a couple of hundred yards, parked by St James. For a diesel Volkswagen Touran whose motor has turned, that's about the best version there is. Ring us, then let the car stand with the ignition alone. Short assists, truly — but a start is a start and a drive is a drive, and the fuel filter has had thinned fuel through it, and so has your pump. Which is why the lines get cleaned and not just that tank cleared.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank instead, in Pinley?

If what went in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the first rule is unchanged — do not start it — but the fault isn't.

The lubrication a fuel system depends on gets stripped away by petrol, which dilutes your diesel.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it causes rust and residue instead.

AdBlue removal in Pinley has a page of its own with the detail on it, including why it is frequently the more serious of the two. We deal with both.

A vehicle you collected two days ago gets driven further before anybody notices anything, which is the hire and courtesy fault in one sentence — and how far it went is what settles the volume of petrol getting to the fuel injectors. Nothing sloppy about the mistake itself: a modern diesel filler neck takes the smaller petrol nozzle with almost no resistance, so new locations see most of these. Ring us from wherever you are, by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints or not, and we will come to the Volvo XC60.

## Paying for a petrol-in-diesel drain in Pinley

Our technicians cannot put one price on this page frankly, as the job isn't one job. What changes it:

- Whether the engine has been started or driven. This is the big one.

- Wrong fuel in, against what your tank holds — that ratio.

- AdBlue or petrol, whichever got in.

- Where is it? And can a technician get to it and work there sensibly?

Tell us the car, the amount and if it has run, and you will get a clear answer rather than a range.

For the car at home that is going nowhere and isn't urgent, works too.

## Petrol in diesel queries from Pinley motorists

## At a petrol station around Pinley, can you do a fuel drain there?

Much of what our engineers do happens nowhere else. So yes.

Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Texaco is somewhere we're often enough, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you'll hear if working there is possible.

## How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Whether the motor has run counts a lot more, though the proportion matters too, instead of the litres.

Five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is needed is whether that blend has been drawn through the system.

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Switch off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop.

Driving shifts the issue along — out of the tank, into your pump and injectors. People fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really helpful thing left to you isn't restarting it.

## Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain then flush done to a correct standard, which is no alteration at all.

A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

Two-stroke oil solves a distinct issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No.

Petrol remains in that tank after that, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no respite from it.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — essential?

There's no need to take it to a dealership, because our engineers drain and flush the vehicle wherever it is.

## You, and your car, still together?

The motor remains off.

Already driven it? Then stop somewhere safe, turn off, then let the vehicle remain that way.

This is recoverable from much more commonly than drivers fear, and a parked, cold car is the best position to be in.

Draining wrongly fuelled motors, Pinley and the rest of West Midlands, wherever they are. Roadside. Forecourt. Home.
