# Plumpton: Petrol in a Diesel Car? Here Is What Happens

Stop. Motor off. Keep the car like that — no second on, no moving it at all.

The next few minutes settle it far more than anything else: petrol in a diesel still unrun normally amounts to draining then rinsing, on the spot.

Anywhere you are in Plumpton, this is how things run from now.

## Petrol in a diesel, motor off — the first minute

First, the following — following this sequence.

- Take your keys out. Even your ignition on its own can prime the fuel system, drawing petrol out of the tank to precisely the components it damages, so leave it off wholly.

- A fuller tank of the same mixture is all adding diesel gives you, since it removes nothing. So no extra diesel.

- Near passing traffic? Then your hazards go on before everything else, and so your car is simple to see.

- Off the pump by hand. At a forecourt, ask the staff to help you roll the vehicle clear of the petrol pump. Do not start the vehicle to move it, however short the distance.

- Which fuel, and roughly how much? Your receipt replies that, and that's where our first question starts. Don't throw it away.

Still driving when you realised? Come off the M6 at the next junction if that's where you are, under a mile from Plumpton, and stop somewhere safe instead of pushing on to the services. Then begin at stage one.

## The fork in every Plumpton fuel drain: has it run yet?

Everything after this stage rests on one answer.

Not run, not even briefly:

- Just that tank has petrol in it for now.

- Normally it is drained and rinsed just where the vehicle stands.

- No spot is better, and it is why the first step matters so much.

Run at all, however briefly:

- The fuel lines and the filter already carry petrol drawn out of that tank.

- On a bigger run it has got to the high-pressure pump as well as your injectors.

- Mileage is what makes it a larger job: the lines flushed, a filter seen to, and at times further work.

The reason the line falls there: diesel lubricates the high-pressure pump as well as the fuel injectors as it passes through them, and petrol does not.

Nothing is damaged by petrol that's just sitting in a tank.

Pump that petrol, though, and it grinds down the very parts that move it.

## Plumpton, petrol in a diesel: have these ready before you call

Get ready a little, and the van finds you instead of circling.

- The ideal start is a postcode — one beginning CA11 9 — for where you have stopped.

- Wherever you have parked, the road's name is useful — whether that's Beckside or somewhere else — and so does the name of a car park.

- Car parks are found most easily by what they serve: say the one outside Lakes & Dales Co-operative, and it is straightforward.

- The car. Make, model, plus that it's a diesel.

- Petrol or AdBlue? Tell us which. They are different jobs, and AdBlue has a separate Plumpton page.

- Roughly how much — in litres from the receipt, or by how long the nozzle stayed in.

- Has it run? If so, say how far it got, and how it was driven.

- Whose vehicle it is. Some hire or company agreements want the owner to approve this work, and that is quicker settled before our engineers get there than after.

Then ring 0333 366 0103. If it can wait — your car is at home with going nowhere — works too.

## Plumpton fuel drain on its way? Whilst you wait

Help, however well meant, is the thing that does the damage whilst you wait. So hold to these.

- Where the vehicle has stopped decides where you wait. Somewhere exposed: away from it, away from the traffic. Sensible: with it. Either way, safety ahead of your car.

- A kind passer-by does not crank it. Nor does anybody checking it still works, or rolling it a couple of yards.

- Additives stay in your boot. Injector cleaner and two-stroke oil draw none of that petrol out a second time.

- A DIY drain leaves your fuel already gone beyond that tank, and siphoning petrol by the road is risky besides.

- Not for your radio, not for the windows: the ignition remains off.

## Step by step: the fuel drain when the van arrives

- First, three queries: which fuel went in, the volume, and has it run? Those answers decide this job, and so the price follows them.

- Out of that tank comes the contaminated mix: your tank is drained.

- Your lines are purged. If it ran, that petrol has moved beyond that tank, and the fuel lines are carrying it.

- Cleared, or changed if the vehicle has a workable one: the fuel filter is dealt with next.

- The system is primed on fresh diesel.

- The first start on clean diesel. When priming is finished, your engine is started and our engineers check that it runs properly.

Only when it's running on fresh diesel do our engineers head off.

The car goes back to normal driving right away, and lasting damage is very rare when it has been spotted early.

## After the fuel drain is done: driving around Plumpton a second time

- Started on fresh diesel, it needs nothing unusual of you. Just drive normally.

- Pull over and call us back if anything seems wrong early on — a light on your dash, smoke from the exhaust, an idle that is lumpy, or a throttle with a dead spot.

- The work may come up later with a hire company, an insurer or a fleet manager. Keep the documents.

- Check the label on the petrol pump next time, not the colour of the handle.
