# Pocklington: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

If you have not turned on the motor as yet, don't. A drain and nothing else is almost always what a vehicle requires while the fuel is still sitting in your tank and the engine has not yet been started, which is why it is the coming few minutes that count, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel comes to your car wherever it has come to rest in Pocklington or the rest of East Riding of Yorkshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, and drains and cleans it there.

Our team shall explain what the next step is. Ring us — it happens before everything else.

## Your first five steps: petrol in a diesel

- Don't crank it. Started anyway? Then do not believe it. Diesel in a petrol car typically won't run, and so the motorist stops and the harm ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It drives off normally, for a couple of miles. Most people get that reversed. It is not all right — your fuel system is grinding every mile you do.

- Diesel burns, and before it ignites it greases — that high-pressure fuel pump, its injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave your ignition off also: flicking it on is commonly all it takes to prime that system, and priming moves petrol from the tank into precisely those components.

- Topping up gets rid of nothing. It leaves you a fuller tank of the same mix, since a diesel fuel system does not cope with petrol by percentage as that guidance implies — so never put diesel on top to dilute it. Grade is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.

- Stay where you are if you reasonably can. A motor that hasn't moved is the quickest one to handle, and our team would sooner travel to a tricky place than have it started. If you are parked on the verge on St Peters Square, switch those hazards on and leave the car there.

- A van turning up rather than circling turns on two things: a postcode that starts YO42 2, and whatever is nearest to you with a name on it. Keep both prepared before you dial.

- Phone 0333 366 0103. Expect three questions — what was put in, about how much, plus if the car has been turned over. Those replies decide everything that comes after.

## Forecourt drains for petrol in a diesel

Most of the job starts at the pump, meaning a large chunk of that ends up completed there.

We work on petrol station forecourts routinely, with the owner's agreement, and so if you're still at BP that's typically where this drain gets done.

Before the motor has fired — a forecourt is the single place the mistake ends up spotted.

The few seconds between checking your receipt and going for the key determine how much requires rinsing. Anywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the car was switched on and moved to get there, so fuel was drawn from that tank, through your filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means the fuel lines and the fuel filter require rinsing as well as the tank. It's not a disaster, and our technicians can still put it right where your car stands.

Staff will normally pitch in pushing it away from the pump, which lets the next driver get by. Accept the help.

Firing the car over four car lengths? Don't.

How much fuel the pump has sucked is what we're really asking — not how long ago any of it was. So the call we want goes like this: diesel Renault Megane, some litres of unleaded, a couple of miles covered, now switched off outside Co-op Food.

## Parts our vans cover around Pocklington

Pocklington is a riverside town, and so our team get out to it and to anywhere around it on those same rounds: Canal Head, Kilnwick Percy, Broad Ings, Barmby Moor and Allerthorpe.

If yours isn't on that list it does not mean we never come — there are pages for most places across East Riding of Yorkshire, and the ones mentioned above are simply the nearest neighbours.

On a border, or somewhere your phone can't find? Phone and enquire instead of assuming.

That map shows the ground the page covers.

Every bit of that is territory our engineers work: a kerbside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You do not bring the car anywhere.

Someone will advise you to shift the vehicle out of the gateway and deal with it later. Don't. A wrongly fuelled diesel BMW 3 Series on the zig-zags by Pocklington Junior School is a hassle; the same vehicle restarted three more times to be courteous is a fuel system rather than a tank. Every restart primes the lines and draws more petrol through your filter and into your pump. Leave it there, let them complain, and ring us.

## Pocklington: stranded where you stopped

The chance to pull over anywhere suitable does not come to everybody.

A normal call for us rather than an odd one: worked out after setting off, finished up on the verge beside Market Place or in a lay-by with the hazard lights on.

Clear of the vehicle if it isn't safe to wait there, by it if it is.

Never fire up the motor to nurse the car somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing that mix further into the system.

Pressing on does the car far more harm than our van driving out to a tricky location, and that's no problem for us.

This is what a job in the car park outside The Feathers Hotel normally looks like. We reach your car, ask what was put in, about how much, and whether the engine has run since — these three replies decide much of the work. Then the polluted mixture comes out of that tank, the lines get rinsed, and the fuel filter comes off where your Audi A4 has a serviceable one. New diesel goes in and your system is primed. Then we fire it up, confirm it runs smoothly, and you set off.

## Driven it already? Stop, and check this

This is where the local M62 comes into it — under 15 miles away from Pocklington.

It will usually get you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it is smoke, a lumpy idle and power ebbing away — not a clean stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Don't restart it to reposition. Get off at the first sensible junction then switch off.

It alters what our engineers bring, and so tell us when you call: on a longer run — anything near the under 15 miles to the closest city — take it the mixture has been through your filter, the pump and the injectors.

None of it is the motor failing. That is the bit worth hearing, and it's why the ordinary Jubilee Garden call ends better than it sounds: a diesel Dacia Duster drives out there without a murmur, comes back with the power gone, your idle uneven and perhaps a little smoke, and the cause is the fuel no longer behaving like diesel. Diesel has to be heavy enough to seal the tightly fitted components it runs through; petrol dilutes it; and a diesel injection system is hydraulic as much as chemical, needing the fuel to hold pressure instead of only to burn. So pressure that should build and stay built bleeds past gaps, delivery shows up weaker and later and less even than designed, and all of that stops once the fuel is corrected.

## Pocklington itself

Pocklington is a town situated on the banks of the Pocklington Beck in the East Riding of Yorkshire, with a mix of old and new buildings, including many detached houses. Pocklington lies approximately 12 miles from York, making it a commuter town for those working in the city. Pocklington has a population of around 10,124 people and is surrounded by nearby places such as Canal Head and Kilnwick Percy. Pocklington is located at an elevation of 36 metres above sea level, in a relatively low-lying area of the Yorkshire landscape.

## Our call-out around Pocklington, step by step

- Three things get asked before any quote — the fuel that got in, the quantity, and if anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.

- The tainted fuel comes from the tank.

- Our technicians rinse your fuel lines and clean the filter, so what is left in the system is not what created the problem.

- New diesel goes in, and then your system gets primed.

- It's started with fresh diesel in it, and our engineers check that it's running properly.

At that point it is ready to set off.

There's no need for a workshop at any point, as the work is all done where the vehicle is, and when it is noticed early, lasting damage is very rare.

Ringing from near Pocklington Arts Centre? Three things help us. The filler — which side of the car it is on. Room for a technician beside you, without the road being blocked. And if anything has run since the fill-up. The place itself scarcely counts: on-street is where we work most, and we would much rather have a narrow bay than a motor a person has driven somewhere quicker. Then it's a drain for the Peugeot 3008, a filter change where there's one worth changing, lines cleaned, clean fuel put round the entire circuit. By now the worst of that is in your lines and not your tank.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Pocklington is a different matter

The issue is not the same, though the opening rule is — don't fire it up — if what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol.

Diluted diesel, and no protection left for your fuel system that depends on it. That's petrol.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus residue.

Often the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the details sits on its own Pocklington page. Both are ours to deal with.

## Paying for a petrol-in-diesel drain around Pocklington

One price wouldn't be fair here, as this is not one job. These are the things that change it:

- Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.

- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, against how much the tank can hold.

- The sort of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.

- Access: the vehicle's position, and whether working on it there's sensible for a van.

The vehicle, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm rather than as a range.

Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is ideal for that.

## Questions our engineers get about petrol in diesel in Pocklington

## Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Pocklington?

Yes — forecourts are where a fair share of this takes place.

Consent from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Shell is somewhere we are frequently, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you'll hear whether working there's possible.

## A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Litres are not the yardstick. Ratio is, and much more than either, it matters whether anything has been run.

An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct scenarios, of course. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether the system has had that blend drawn through it.

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Turn off somewhere sensible, and keep it that way after you stop.

Driving takes the issue along — out of the tank, into the pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one genuinely valuable thing left to you is not restarting the vehicle.

## Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

It is not a modification, so a drain and flush carried out properly doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty.

Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a separate issue and it does not restore what petrol has diluted.

Petrol remains in that tank later, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no respite from it.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

There is no need to bring it to a dealership, as we drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is.

## You, and your vehicle, still together?

Keep the engine switched off.

If you have already driven the vehicle, stop somewhere sensible, turn it off then keep it off.

Cold and stationary, a motor is in the best position available — and motorists fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.

Clearing misfuelled motors, Pocklington and the rest of East Riding of Yorkshire, wherever they are. Kerbside. Forecourt. Home.
