# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Porthleven?

Don't fire up the motor. While the petrol is still sitting in that tank and the engine has not yet run, a drain is nearly always all it needs — and that gets settled in the coming few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled cars where they sit, across Porthleven and the rest of Cornwall, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive.

Ring us before all else begins, and you will see what comes after that.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to try next

- Whenever you drive, your pump and your injectors wear down. That is why you never crank it, and why you do not believe it once it has started. The trick about petrol in a diesel specifically — the bit most people get wrong — is that it drives away normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine normally won't run at all, which stops the person and stops the harm with them. This one lets you keep going.

- Leave your ignition alone too. Diesel performs two jobs: it combusts, and before it combusts it lubricates that high-pressure fuel pump and those injectors. Petrol manages the first and not the second. Turning your ignition on is frequently enough to prime the system, which moves the petrol out of your tank then into exactly those components.

- Do not tip diesel on top to dilute it. A diesel fuel system will not accept petrol by percentage in the way that advice presumes, and topping up clears nothing — it only hands you a larger tank of the same blend. The grade makes no difference either: super unleaded is just petrol.

- We would rather get to a tricky spot than have it started — so if you sensibly can, stay put. Nothing is simpler to deal with than a car that has not shifted. On the verge on Torleven Road (Preacher's Hill), that means hazards on then keep the vehicle.

- A van turning up rather than circling depends on two things: a postcode beginning TR13 9, and whatever is nearest to you with a label on it. Keep both prepared before you ring.

- Call 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three points — what was put in, about how much, and if your car has been run. The responses decide everything that follows.

Nothing about the hours since has lost you anything. Fuel in a tank is harmless, so a diesel Volkswagen Golf sitting outside St Erth this morning is no worse at five than it was at nine — what sucked weakened diesel through the pump was the journey in. Phone before you head off to collect it.

## On a forecourt: clearing petrol from your diesel

A large part of the work gets finished at the pump, because that's where it usually starts.

Still at Pace? Then that is usually where it gets done. Petrol station forecourts are routine for us, with the agreement of the owner.

Before the engine has run — a forecourt is the only location this gets halted.

The few seconds between checking the till receipt and going for the key settle how much needs cleaning. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — your car was switched on and driven to get there, so fuel was sucked from the tank, through the fuel filter and into your high-pressure pump. That means the fuel lines and the fuel filter need cleaning as well as the tank. It is not a calamity, and we can still put it right where the car is.

The staff will normally offer to wheel it away from the petrol pump so the next customer can get by. It is worth doing.

Shifting the car four spaces does not warrant starting the motor.

The difficult part is the bay, not your fuel. Motors either side of you, a trolley shelter behind, and from time to time a height barrier on the way in that decides whether a technician can reach you at all — so when you call from a car park like the one at Costcutter, mention how much space there's round you and which way round your car is. Those we visit frequently. Should there be no room to work beside the diesel Renault Clio, it gets moved with your engine off, and not out of fussiness over a couple of seconds of running: priming happens at every start, more of that blend departs that tank for your pump, and two shunts into a nicer space have silently made a harder job of what was simply a car sitting still.

## Coverage near Porthleven

Porthleven is a coastal village, and we get out to the town and to anywhere near it on the same runs: Penrose Hill, Degibna, Breage, Trevena and Sithney Common.

Not on this list? It tells you nothing. The names above are only the nearest few, and the majority of places in Cornwall have a page of their own elsewhere on this site.

Near the border, or anywhere your phone can't find? Contact us to ask rather than presuming.

That map outlines the patch the page includes.

Every bit of that is ground our technicians work: a roadside, a forecourt, a driveway, a car park. You do not drive your vehicle anywhere.

A diesel pump delivers fuel on demand, and a hurried morning run needs plenty — so three miles in the Skoda Octavia feels like nothing and is not. Twenty to nine by Porthleven School, already late, a receipt in your hand saying unleaded: hazards on, engine off, ring us.

## Stopped at the roadside somewhere in Porthleven?

The opportunity to stop somewhere suitable doesn't fall to everybody.

Hazards flashing at a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge on Holmans Place as you realised after setting off — we take that call regularly enough that it's the ordinary kind.

Whether you sit by your car or stand clear of it depends on if sitting nearby looks safe.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags that mix further into the fuel system — and oblige it often will, which is why your motor doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere safer.

A technician heading to a difficult place is no problem for us, and it's far better for the vehicle than carrying on.

Do not risk it. The journey home from Harbour Inn is perfectly possible, which is precisely the trouble — a thinned tank does not stop a diesel starting or pulling away, it just wears the parts the fuel is meant to lubricate. Phone, then let the Mercedes C-Class stay where it is.

## Driven it already? Pull over, then see below

This is where the M5 comes in — over 50 miles from Porthleven.

It will frequently take you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it's some smoke, an uneven idle and power falling away — not a tidy stop. Misfuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Don't start it to move it. Pull off at the next safe junction and turn off.

Suppose the worst of that on a long drive. Anything close to the under 25 miles to the closest city, and the mixture has been through the fuel filter, through your pump, through your injectors. Say so when you call. What our technicians bring changes.

## Where is Porthleven?

Porthleven is a coastal village in Cornwall, situated on the shore of Mounts Bay at an elevation of around 15 metres. Porthleven has a population of approximately 2035 people and is characterised by predominantly detached housing. Porthleven is located near Penrose Hill, Degibna, and Breage, and is about 16.9 miles from Truro, the nearest city. Porthleven sits in a scenic area of the South West, with its coastal setting attracting visitors from across the country, including those from London, which is around 246.8 miles away.

## When our engineers get to you around Porthleven: what happens

- Three things get checked before any price — the fuel that went in, the quantity, and if anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.

- The tank gets emptied of it.

- We rinse your fuel lines and clean the filter, and so what is remaining in your system isn't what caused the trouble.

- The fuel system gets bled, on fresh diesel.

- The motor is fired up and checked to be sure it runs properly on fresh diesel.

From that point, you're ready to drive away.

Everything is done where your car is, so it never has to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been spotted soon, permanent damage is very rare.

## A separate matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Porthleven

The fault isn't the same, though the first rule is — do not start it — if what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol.

Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and strips out the lubrication the system relies on.

AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to corrosion and deposits in its place.

Frequently the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the details sits on its own Porthleven page. Both are ours to handle.

## Porthleven prices for a petrol-in-diesel drain

Our engineers can't put one figure on this page truthfully, as the job is not one job. What changes it:

- Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.

- How much of the wrong fuel got in, set against how much the tank takes.

- The sort of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.

- Whether a van can safely reach your vehicle and work on it, which hinges on where the vehicle is.

The vehicle, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back clear rather than as a range.

Car at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is ideal for that.

No warning exists for this, which is why vehicles in that position generally get driven once more before somebody phones. Please don't be one of them. The throttle went limp and the idle turned uneven after a couple of streets, and your diesel Ford Fiesta is now sitting near Saint Bartholomew's Church. Sluggishness there means fuel that can't build pressure properly rather than an engine giving up. Switch off. Phone us.

## Petrol in diesel questions from Porthleven drivers

## Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Porthleven?

A fair portion of this work happens there, so yes.

Regularly, provided the site agrees: Sainsbury's, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether our engineers can work in that location is something our technicians answer there and then.

## A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Litres aren't the yardstick. Ratio is, and much more than either, it counts if anything has been run.

Five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is needed is if that mix has been drawn through the system.

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Pull in somewhere sensible, turn off, then leave it off.

Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does move the trouble out of the tank then into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays salvageable a lot more regularly than motorists assume.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain then flush done to a proper standard, which is no modification at all.

An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

What petrol has weakened isn't restored by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a different issue. So no.

Your pump still has to live with it, as your tank still has petrol in it afterwards.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

You don't need one. Your car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a main dealer.

## Is the car still with you?

Don't turn the engine back on.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, switch off, and no restarting it after that.

Cold, still, going nowhere: that is the best place to be in. Drivers fear this much more than they need to.

Emptying misfilled cars, Porthleven and the rest of Cornwall, wherever they are. Roadside. Forecourt. Home.
