# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Portree? Don't Start It

Never start the engine. While the fuel is still sitting in that tank and the motor has not turned over, a tank drain is almost always all it takes — and that is decided in the following few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled vehicles where they stand, throughout Portree and the rest of Highland, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway.

Our technicians shall show you what the next move is. Ring us — this comes ahead of all else.

## Now what? Petrol in a diesel, in turn

- Feed a petrol engine diesel and it will usually refuse to run at all, and so the motorist stops there and so does the wear. Give a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it idles, it moves off — fine for several miles. Most people have that muddled, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So never start the vehicle. And once started, do not rely on it: your fuel system is wearing while you drive.

- Two tasks, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps that high-pressure pump and injectors lubricated. Petrol only manages the one. That is why the car's ignition remains off too — flick it on and you commonly prime your system, and that's petrol leaving the tank for precisely those parts.

- Topping up takes out nothing. It leaves you a fuller tank of the same blend, because a diesel fuel system will not handle petrol by percentage as that advice presumes — so don't add diesel on top to dilute it. Grade is beside the point too: super unleaded is petrol.

- We would much rather drive to a tricky location than have it started — so if you reasonably can, sit tight. Nothing is quicker to sort than a vehicle that hasn't shifted. On the verge on Park Road, that means hazards on then leave the vehicle.

- Keep your position prepared before you ring. A postcode that starts IV51 9 and whatever is next to you with a name on it is the difference between our van turning up and the van circling.

- What went in, approximately how many litres, plus if the engine has fired — those three answers settle the whole call-out. Phone 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

Don't drive it home. The drive in has already forced a real amount of petrol-thinned diesel through your high-pressure pump of your Volkswagen Tiguan, and the drive back would close to double it for no purpose at all. Phone us from the platform if that is simpler. Our technicians never need you standing over the vehicle outside the nearest station while our engineers get on, and we would far rather talk to you tonight than find out on Monday.

## Can petrol be drained from a diesel on a forecourt?

The work starts at a pump, typically. Often enough it ends there too.

Still at Portree filling station? Then that is generally where it happens. Garage forecourts are everyday for us, with the agreement of the owner.

Before the engine has started — the forecourt is the one spot it gets caught.

Fuel pulled out of the tank and through the fuel filter, all the way to the high-pressure pump, is what happens when the engine is switched on and the car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes your filter and the fuel lines as well as the tank. That is still not a catastrophe, and our technicians put it right where the vehicle is. What determines it is whether the key was turned in the seconds after your receipt was checked.

Out from the petrol pump, the next customer can get through — so yes, let the attendants help you wheel the car. Well worth doing.

Cranking it for four car lengths? Not a chance.

We're in car parks like the one outside Co-op Food a lot, and it is hardly ever your fuel that complicates them. It's the bay. Motors both sides. Trolleys stacked up behind. Sometimes a height limit at the entrance, which determines if our van gets to you at all. So say how hemmed in you are when you ring, and which way the vehicle is pointing. If there's no space to work beside your BMW 3 Series, we roll it without the motor. That is not fuss over a couple of seconds: starts prime things, mixture comes out of your tank towards the pump, and a motor moved twice for a better spot is silently a worse job than one no one touched.

## Coverage around Portree

The same trips get us to Sulaisiadar Mor, Sluggans, Inveralivaig, Toravaig and Achadh aChoirce besides Portree, which is a coastal village.

Our engineers do come. The names above are merely the immediate neighbours, and a page exists for nearly all locations in Highland, and so an absence from the list is not an absence from the coverage.

Ring us to ask rather than presuming — borders especially, and wherever your phone might struggle with.

The map shows the patch the page covers.

Roadside, forecourt, private drive, car park: the lot is ground our engineers work on, and none of it requires the vehicle to travel to us.

Hazards on. Engine off. Phone us. It is twenty to nine by the local primary school, you're late, and your receipt reads unleaded — and even though three miles in your Peugeot 308 seems like nothing, fuel gets delivered on demand, and a frantic dash demands plenty of it.

## Stranded on the kerbside somewhere in Portree?

Some drivers find no safe spot to pull over whatsoever.

Hazards flashing in a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge of Somerled Square as you realised after setting off — our technicians take that call often enough that it's the ordinary kind.

Okay where you are? Sit by it. Not fine? Climb out and clear of it.

Do not restart the motor to limp the vehicle somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing that mixture further into your fuel system.

Pressing on causes your car far more harm than our van heading out to a tricky place, and that is no trouble for us.

## Run it already? Pull over, and see below

over 50 miles from Portree, the M8 is what counts here.

It will frequently take you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it's some smoke, an uneven idle and power falling away — not a tidy stop. Misfilled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Take the next exit that's sensible, pull up there, and don't start the car to reposition.

Long trip? Anything near the over 50 miles to the nearest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that reached by the mixture. Say that on the phone, because it affects what goes in our van.

## Where is Portree?

Portree is a small coastal village in the Highland region of Scotland, situated at an elevation of 18 metres and overlooking the sea. Portree is located near several nearby places, including Sulaisiadar Mor, Sluggans, and Inveralivaig, and is approximately 73 miles from the city of Inverness. Portree has a population of around 648 people and features predominantly semi-detached housing. Portree is a significant distance from London, at around 475 miles away.

## Our visit around Portree, step by step

- The replies alter the work, which is why our engineers ask before pricing: what was put in, how much of it, and if the engine has run.

- We clear the tank of all the polluted fuel.

- What is left in your system should not be what created the trouble, and so the lines get flushed and the filter cleaned.

- Clean diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets bled.

- When it is fired up, we confirm it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

The vehicle is then ready for you to pull away.

Everything is done where the car is, so it never has to go to a garage, and when it has been spotted quickly, long-term damage is very rare.

## Portree AdBlue removal is a distinct job

If what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the opening instruction is unchanged — don't fire it up — but the problem is not.

Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and removes the lubrication the fuel system relies on.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with your diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus residue.

Frequently the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the details lives on its own Portree page. Both are ours to handle.

Knocking, a ragged idle, white smoke, a throttle gone soft. That is a wrongly fuelled diesel Citroen C3 telling you what is wrong. Switch off where you have stopped, by The Tattie Bogle Clan or anywhere else, and do not restart the car to find a better location.

## Paying for a petrol-in-diesel drain in Portree

One number wouldn't be fair here, because this isn't one job. These are the things that change it:

- This is the main one: whether the motor has been run, or driven.

- How much of the wrong fuel went in, measured against how much your tank holds.

- AdBlue or petrol, whichever got in.

- Where is it? And can a technician reach it and work there safely?

Tell us what the car is, how much went in, and whether the motor has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range.

For the vehicle at home that is going nowhere and isn't urgent, is fine too.

Put right and starting aren't the same thing, and the difference is the circuit: we flush it, and take your filter off where there is a serviceable one. Compare that with the sure of themselves advice you will get — drain the car, refill with fresh diesel. Half true. Do exactly that to a diesel Kia Sportage by Portree War Memorial and it'll start, which is precisely why the tip sounds plausible. Then the motor draws the petrol left behind in the fuel filter, and in the feed lines, straight back through your pump, because draining a tank does nothing whatever about fuel that has already left it. Phone us instead.

## Petrol in diesel: common queries in Portree

## At a petrol station in Portree, can you do a fuel drain there?

Yes — forecourts are where a fair part of this takes place.

Often, provided the site consents: another forecourt nearby, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether we can work in that place is something we answer straight away.

## A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Whether your motor has run matters a lot more, though the ratio counts too, instead of the litres.

A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct situations, certainly. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is if the fuel system has had that mixture pulled through it.

## I put petrol in my diesel and drove the vehicle. What now?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then switch off and keep it off.

Driving shifts the trouble along — out of the tank, into the pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one genuinely valuable thing left to you isn't restarting the car.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

No. Carried out properly, draining and flushing is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it.

What's likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the motor to stay off.

## Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

What petrol has weakened isn't replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old fix for a separate problem. So no.

Your pump still has to cope with it, since that tank still has petrol in it later.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?

There is no need to take it to a dealership, because our technicians drain and flush the vehicle wherever it is.

## Is your vehicle still with you?

Switched off is the way it stays.

If you have already driven the vehicle, pull in somewhere safe, switch it off then leave it off.

Cold, still, going nowhere: that's the best position to be in. Drivers fear this far more than they need to.

Throughout Highland and around Portree: on-site fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the kerbside.
