# Portrush: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled cars where they stand, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, across Portrush and the rest of County Londonderry. The first thing to do is not to fire up the engine. While the engine has not yet turned over and the fuel is still in your tank, a drain is nearly always all it requires, and the next few minutes decide that, not how much went in.

Just one call to us will be sufficient: we will show you what follows after this. Do that straight away.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to do next

- While you drive, your pump and the fuel injectors wear down. That's why you don't crank it, and why you don't rely on it once it has started. The trick about petrol in a diesel especially — the point drivers get wrong — is that it pulls away happily for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine usually won't run at all, which stops the person and stops the harm with them. This one lets you drive on.

- Leave your ignition be also. Diesel performs two roles: it ignites, and before it combusts it protects that injection pump and its injectors. Petrol manages the first and not the second. Flicking the car's ignition on is usually enough to prime the system, which pulls the petrol out of your tank and into just those components.

- Don't weaken it. Diesel poured on top removes nothing, and so all you have is more of what was already there, since percentage is not how a diesel fuel system copes with petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The grade makes no difference.

- Sit tight if it's safe to. Hazards on, ignition off, leave the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Rock Street, anywhere — an odd spot for us trumps a started motor, and nothing is quicker for us to sort than a motor that never moved.

- Check where you are before phoning. A postcode that starts BT56 8, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise our van circles rather than turning up.

- What went in, roughly how much, and if your car has started — these three details decide your whole visit. Call 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

How many miles you went is what our engineers care about, not how long the car has been sitting — and here's why. Diesel does two jobs on its way through an engine: it combusts, and before burning it greases its high-pressure pump and its injectors. Petrol handles the first only. So a rushed fill-up on the drive in, the penny dropping somewhere around eleven, and a diesel Volkswagen Golf parked outside the nearest station since quarter past eight tells us those few miles were travelled with the pump running on a fuel robbed of a great deal of its protection. Phone then keep the car exactly where it is.

## Clearing petrol from your diesel at a forecourt

Pumps are where this work mostly starts, and where a fair chunk of it ends.

We work on garage forecourts all the time, with the station's permission, so if you are still at the nearest petrol station that's usually where the drain gets done.

Before the motor has run — a forecourt is the only location this ends up stopped.

Everywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the car was started and driven to get there, which means fuel was drawn from that tank, through your filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That's not a disaster, and our engineers can still deal with it where it is. It does mean the fuel lines and the fuel filter need flushing as well as your tank, and that is determined by the few seconds between reading the till receipt and reaching for the keys.

Roll the car out of the way if the staff suggest it, and they generally will. The next driver gets through the pump, and that is worth doing.

Starting the car to move four car lengths is not.

## Coverage in Portrush

Portstewart, Portballintrae, Ballyrashane, Coleraine, Bushmills — all of them on our journeys that take us across to Portrush as well, a coastal town.

Our engineers still come. Those places above are merely the immediate neighbours, and a page exists for nearly all locations around County Londonderry, so an absence from the list isn't an absence from the coverage.

Assuming is the mistake to avoid, particularly on a border or anywhere the satnav gets lost. Ring us to check.

This map is the patch the page includes.

All of it is ground our technicians cover: a kerbside, a forecourt, a driveway, a car park. You don't bring your vehicle anywhere.

Nothing alerts you, because from behind the wheel there's nothing to be warned about. The diesel BMW 3 Series will have seemed perfectly ordinary on the way back from the local primary school, and they all do — which is the trap with petrol in a diesel rather than the reverse. Diesel in a petrol car generally refuses to run, stopping the motorist and stopping the damage with them. Petrol in a diesel starts, idles, drives off as though nothing had happened, and all the while the pump does its work without the lubrication its fuel is meant to supply. Tell us approximately how far, and how hard. The harder counts more.

## Stranded by the roadside around Portrush

Not everyone gets the chance to pull in anywhere suitable.

A common call for us instead of a rare one: noticed after setting off, finished up on the verge of Crown Street or at a lay-by with the hazards going.

Remain with the car if it is sensible to wait there, and out of the vehicle if it isn't.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls the blend further into the system — and oblige it often will, which is why your motor doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere better.

We will send our van to a difficult location without any bother, and for your car that's much better than carrying on.

You head off at the end, once our engineers have fired it up and checked it runs properly on fresh diesel, with the system primed. Before that, in the car park by the pub in the village, the tainted fuel comes out of that tank, the fuel lines get flushed and the fuel filter comes off where your Peugeot 308 has a replaceable one. It all begins with three questions when our engineers get to your car: what got in, how much of it, and whether it has been fired up since.

## A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?

This is where your M77 comes in — over 50 miles from Portrush.

A misfuelled diesel will often get you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong, while the signs when they arrive are normally a loss of power, a lumpy idle and some smoke instead of a tidy stop.

The first safe junction is the one to take. Turn off there, then leave the restarting alone.

On a longer run — anything near the under 50 miles to the nearest city — assume the petrol has been through the fuel filter, your pump and the injectors, and mention it when you ring. It alters what our technicians bring.

None of that is the motor failing. That's the bit worth hearing, and it is why the normal the green space at the edge of the village call ends better than it sounds: a diesel Nissan Qashqai drives out there without fuss, comes back with the power gone, your idle uneven and perhaps a little smoke, and the cause is your fuel no longer acting like diesel. Diesel has to be thick enough to seal the tightly fitted components it runs through; petrol thins it; and a diesel injection system is hydraulic as much as chemical, needing the fuel to hold pressure instead of only to burn. So pressure that should build and stay built escapes past tolerances, delivery turns up poorer and later and less even than engineered, and all of that stops once your fuel is put right.

## A little about Portrush

Portrush is a coastal town in County Londonderry, situated on the north coast of Northern Ireland, with a population of around 4422 people. Portrush sits at an elevation of 17 metres, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, and is characterised by predominantly detached housing. Portrush is close to nearby towns such as Portstewart and Portballintrae, and is approximately 29 miles from the city of Derry. Portrush has a scenic coastline and is a popular destination for tourists and locals alike.

## What we do when we get to you in Portrush

- The answers change the work, which is why our engineers ask before giving a price: what got in, how much of that, and whether the engine has run.

- Your tank is cleared of everything.

- Our technicians clean the fuel lines and clean the fuel filter, so what's left in your system isn't what created the trouble.

- Our technicians pour fresh diesel in and bleed your system.

- Once it's turned on, our engineers check it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

That leaves your car ready to set off.

Everything is done where the car is, so it never has to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been spotted quickly, lasting damage is very unusual.

Pulled off the forecourt, read your receipt, and parked your diesel Ford Focus up by the centre a couple of hundred yards later? That's about as well as this goes once the engine has turned. Ring us then leave the car off. The short hop truly helps, but it was still a start and a drive, so thinned fuel has got to the filter and the pump — which is why we flush the fuel lines instead of only emptying that tank.

## A distinct problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Portrush

If what went in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the opening step is unchanged — never fire it up — but the issue isn't.

The protection a fuel system depends on is taken away by petrol, which weakens your diesel.

Rust and residue are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, as AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Both are ours. There's a separate Portrush page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

## How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Portrush?

One price wouldn't be honest here, as this isn't one job. These are the things that move it:

- Whether your motor has been run or driven. This is the big one.

- How much of the wrong fuel got in, weighed against how much that tank can hold.

- The kind of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.

- Whether a technician can sensibly get to your car and work on it, which rests on where your car is.

A straight answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: your car, the amount, and whether it has run.

Not urgent, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

## Portrush drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

## Fuel drains on a Portrush petrol station forecourt

A big share of this work happens there, so yes.

Tell us which one you are at when you call and we'll tell you whether our technicians can work there. With the owner's consent our technicians visit another forecourt nearby and the other forecourts locally all the time.

## Is there a safe quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Proportion decides it instead of litres — and more than either, whether your engine has run.

What settles how much work is needed is whether that blend has been pulled through your fuel system — since even though five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct case from five in a full one, either way that is the query.

## I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then switch off and keep it off.

Driving is what moves the trouble from your tank into the pump and injectors — but it's recoverable much more regularly than people expect, and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

## Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

No. Carried out correctly, draining and purging is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it.

What's likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the motor to stay off.

## Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

Two-stroke oil solves a separate issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No.

The tank still has petrol in it later on, and the pump still has to put up with it.

## Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

Wherever the car is, we drain and clean it there, so a visit to the main dealer does not come into it.

## Still with the car?

Do not switch your engine back on.

Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere safe, switch off, then let it stay that way.

This is recoverable from far more often than drivers fear, and a still, cold vehicle is the best position to be in.

Across County Londonderry and in Portrush: call-out fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the roadside.
