# Petrol in a Diesel Car in Pot House: What Happens Now

Pause, and leave your motor off — not on, and not for a moment to shift it.

Drained then cleaned, right where it is: that is usually all an unrun diesel with petrol in it takes. Whether it remains that simple depends on the minutes ahead more than on anything else.

Wherever you are around Pot House, here is the order things go from now.

## Minute one: petrol in a diesel, motor off

Before anything else, the following — following this order.

- The keys out of the ignition. Switching your ignition on can be all it takes to prime the system, and priming pulls petrol out of the tank towards the components it harms. Leave it off altogether.

- A bigger tank of the same mixture is all topping up leaves you, since it removes nothing. So no extra diesel.

- Get your car easy to see first — hazards on — if there's moving traffic anywhere near you.

- Off the pump by hand. On a forecourt, get the attendants to help you push the vehicle clear of the petrol pump. Do not crank it to move it, however short the way.

- The first thing we will ask is which fuel you put in and roughly how much — and the receipt shows both. Hold on to it.

Still driving when you realised? Come off the M1 at the next exit if that's where you are, under 5 miles from Pot House, and stop somewhere safe and not pushing on to the services. Then start at stage one.

## Has it run yet? The fork in every Pot House fuel drain

Everything after this stage depends on one answer.

Not run, not even briefly:

- Nowhere but that tank: that is where the petrol yet is.

- The job is a simple drain and a flush, normally done where the car stands.

- This is as good as it gets — which is the whole point of stage one.

If the motor has run, even for a moment:

- The lines and your filter now carry petrol pulled out of that tank.

- The high-pressure fuel pump as well as your injectors see it too on a longer run.

- The farther it went, the bigger this job — the fuel lines, the fuel filter, and now and then more besides.

Diesel keeps the high-pressure pump and the injectors lubricated as it runs through them. Petrol offers them nothing, and that is why the line is drawn there.

Petrol resting in a tank harms nothing.

Move that petrol, though, and it wears the very parts that move it.

## Calling about petrol in a diesel from Pot House: what to have ready

Prepare a little, and the technician finds you rather than circling.

- Where you are. A postcode beginning S36 1 is the best start.

- A road name helps: Linden Crescent, say, or whichever street you have stopped in. A car park works too.

- Name a car park by what it serves — the one at Spar, for example — and it's much quicker to find.

- The car. Make, model, plus that it's a diesel.

- Tell us which went in — petrol or AdBlue — since AdBlue is a separate job, with a page of its own for Pot House.

- About how much — in litres from the receipt, or by how long the nozzle stayed in.

- Whether it's run. Then if it has, how far plus how hard.

- Sort who owns the vehicle before our technicians arrive: some hire and company agreements want the owner to approve the work, and doing it quicker first.

Phone 0333 366 0103 next. Email works too if it can wait, with your car parked at home, going nowhere.

## While you wait for a fuel drain around Pot House

During the wait, the damage comes from well-meant help — so these count.

- Where the car has stopped decides where you wait. Exposed: away from it, clear of the traffic. Sensible: with it. Either way, safety ahead of the vehicle.

- A helpful passer-by doesn't fire it up. Nor does anybody wanting to check it still works, or moving it a couple of yards.

- No additives. Two-stroke oil, injector cleaner, something from your boot — none of that takes the petrol back out.

- Siphoning petrol into a can by the kerbside is hazardous — and it also leaves whatever fuel has already gone beyond that tank. Do not try a home-made drain.

- Even the radio or the windows aren't worth switching the ignition on for.

## The fuel drain, step by step, after our van arrives

- Three queries. What was put in, how much, and whether it has run. The answers decide the job, which is why our price comes after them but not before.

- The tank is drained. The tainted mixture comes from that tank.

- Your lines are purged. If it ran, that petrol has shifted beyond that tank, and your lines are carrying it.

- Your filter is sorted. Cleared, or changed where the car has a serviceable one.

- Fresh diesel goes in, and the fuel system is primed.

- First start on fresh diesel. Once bleeding is done, the engine is fired up and our technicians check that it runs correctly.

Your car has new diesel running through it before we head off.

It's very unusual for a vehicle spotted soon to be left with permanent damage, and normal driving resumes right away.

## Once the fuel drain is done: driving around Pot House again

- After it's been started on fresh fuel, there is nothing unusual to do: drive normally.

- Give the first miles your attention. Smoke showing, a warning light coming on, the idle going lumpy or the throttle stumbling: pull over then call us back.

- The documents answers the question a rental company, fleet manager or insurer may ask: what work was carried out. Keep it.

- The handle's colour is not the thing to go by next time — the label on the pump is.
