# Primrose Hill: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Don't fire up the engine. While the petrol is still sitting in the tank and the motor has not run, a tank drain is almost always all it takes — and that's determined in the next few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled cars where they sit, all over Primrose Hill and the remainder of Somerset, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive.

Contact us so our technicians shall show you what follows next before you do much else.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to do now

- Don't start the car. Started all the same? Then do not depend on it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle generally can't run, so the driver stops and the damage stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It pulls away fine, for a few miles. Drivers get that muddled. It is not fine — the fuel system is wearing every mile you cover.

- Flicking your ignition on frequently primes the system, and priming is what draws petrol out of that tank and into the pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps greased on its way through, before it burns. Petrol does the burning and none of the protecting. Leave the car's ignition alone.

- Topping up takes out nothing. It hands you a fuller tank of the same blend, since a diesel fuel system doesn't cope with petrol by percentage as that guidance presumes — so never add diesel on top to weaken it. Grade is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.

- Wait where you are if you safely can. A car that has not shifted is the quickest one to deal with, and we'd sooner drive to a tricky place than have it started. If you are pulled up on the verge on Summerhill Road, put the hazards on then keep the vehicle there.

- Before you call, get your location. Anything next to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode that starts BA1 2 — that is what decides whether our van arrives or circles.

- Three answers determine your whole visit: the stuff you tipped in, the approximate quantity involved, and if it has been running since. The line is 0333 366 0103.

## Removing petrol from the diesel at a forecourt

A fair part of this work gets completed at the pump, because that is where it usually starts.

If you're still at the forecourt at Sainsbury's, that's generally where the drain takes place — we work on garage forecourts routinely, with the station's consent.

A filling station is the only setting this can be halted before your motor has fired.

Anywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the car was started and moved to get there, which means fuel was drawn from your tank, through the filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That is not a calamity, and our engineers can still sort it out where it stands. It does mean the lines and the fuel filter need flushing as well as that tank, and that is decided by the few seconds between checking the till receipt and going for your key.

Away from the pump, the next driver can get through — so yes, let the staff help you wheel it. Well worth doing.

Starting it for four car lengths? Don't.

If you've put petrol in the diesel Renault Clio in Primrose Hill and you're now stuck outside Co-op Food with a boot packed with shopping, ring us. Never start the vehicle once more to exit that space. We'll come to you, clear the tank, purge your fuel lines and put fresh diesel in so you can get home. A mile or so at light throttle draws very little of it, which is why these are often the simple cases.

## Parts our vans reach around Primrose Hill

Being a residential suburb, Primrose Hill gets a regular visit, and the places nearby go with it on that same trip: Sion Hill and Weston Park, Lansdown and Combe Park, Beacon Hill.

We do come. Those names above are merely the immediate neighbours, and a page exists for the majority of places in Somerset, so an absence from the list isn't an absence from our coverage.

Close to the boundary, or somewhere a satnav can't find? Call us and ask instead of assuming.

This map shows the patch this page spans.

Roadside, forecourt, drive, car park: all of that is territory our technicians work on, and none of that asks your car to move to us.

## Roadside stops in Primrose Hill

Not everyone finds a safe spot to stop.

If you realised after setting off and landed by the verge beside Mountain Ash, or at a lay-by somewhere with your hazards going, that's a normal call for us rather than a rare one.

Remain by the vehicle if it is safe to sit inside, and clear of the car if it's not.

Do not restart it to get to a safer spot. It will go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls that blend deeper into the fuel system.

However inconvenient the location, it's no bother for us to get to it, and that's a lot better for your car than pressing on.

Your Audi A4 stays where it is in the car park by The Old Crown for the whole job, which typically runs like this. First our engineers ask what went in, about how much, and whether the engine has run since, because much of the work depends on those replies. The tank is emptied of the tainted mix, the lines are rinsed, and the filter comes off if it is a serviceable one. With new diesel in and your system primed, your car is fired up and checked, and once it is running smoothly you set off.

## Driven it already? Pull over, and check this

under 10 miles out of Primrose Hill, the M4 is what matters now.

It will usually take you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it's some smoke, a lumpy idle and power falling away — not a tidy stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.

The next safe junction is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone.

Presume the worst of it on a long trip. Anything near the under 3 miles to the nearest city, and the mixture has been through your filter, through your pump, through the injectors. Tell us when you call. What our engineers bring alters.

Here is the entire process. Diesel needs enough body to seal the fine clearances it goes through, and petrol takes that away. That's it. Which explains the usual Weston Park call — a diesel Peugeot 3008, out there without a murmur and back down on power, lumpy at idle, possibly a bit of smoke. Injection systems work hydraulically as well as chemically, and so the fuel has to hold pressure and not just burn; thinned, it bleeds past those gaps instead of building, and delivery comes poorer, later, less even than the engine was engineered round. Not a failing engine, though. Fuel that has stopped acting like diesel. Put that right and it stops.

## A bit about Primrose Hill

Primrose Hill is a suburban area located near the city of Bath in Somerset, sitting at an elevation of around 115 metres. Primrose Hill is characterized by its predominantly detached housing stock and is situated close to nearby places such as Sion Hill and Weston Park. Primrose Hill remains a residential community on the outskirts of Bath, with the city centre just over a mile away. Primrose Hill is also near Lansdown, another local area of note.

## What we do when our technicians reach you around Primrose Hill

- The answers alter the work, which is why we ask before quoting: what got in, how much of it, and whether the motor has run.

- The tank is emptied of it.

- What is remaining in the system should not be what started the issue, and so the lines get flushed and the fuel filter cleaned.

- Clean diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets primed.

- It's started with fresh diesel in it, and we confirm that it's running properly.

That has your car ready to pull away.

Lasting damage is very rare when it has been noticed soon, and as all of it is done where your car is, it never needs to go to a workshop.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank instead, in Primrose Hill?

Never fire it up: that opening rule holds whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is the fault itself.

Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and strips out the lubrication your fuel system relies on.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus deposits.

Both are ours. There's a separate Primrose Hill page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

Knocking, a ragged idle, white smoke, a throttle gone soft. That is a misfuelled diesel Ford Kuga telling you what's wrong. Switch off where you have stopped, by Minerva the Owl or anywhere else, and never restart the vehicle to find a better spot.

## What a petrol-in-diesel drain costs in Primrose Hill

Frankly, no single number fits on a page like this. The job changes. Here's what moves it:

- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.

- Wrong fuel in, against what the tank holds — that proportion.

- Whether it was unleaded or AdBlue.

- Access: the car's position, and if working on it there's sensible for a van.

The car, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back clear rather than as a range.

Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is fine for that.

Fixed and starting aren't the same thing, and the difference is the system: our engineers flush it, and take the fuel filter off where there's a serviceable one. Compare that with the sure of themselves advice you'll get — drain the vehicle, refill with clean diesel. Only half right. Do precisely that to a diesel Vauxhall Insignia near Temple of Minerva and it will start, which is exactly why the advice sounds reasonable. Then the motor draws the petrol left behind in the filter, and in the feed lines, straight back through the pump, as draining a tank does nothing whatever about fuel that has already left it. Call us instead.

## Petrol in diesel: everyday questions in Primrose Hill

## Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Primrose Hill?

Yes, and it is where a good portion of this work takes place.

Regularly, provided the site agrees: Esso, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our engineers can work in that spot is something our technicians answer straight away.

## How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Whether the motor has run counts far more, though the proportion counts too, rather than the litres.

What settles how much work is required is if that blend has been pulled through your fuel system — because although five litres in an almost empty tank is a different matter from five in a full one, either way that is the query.

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Pull over somewhere safe, turn off, and leave the vehicle off.

It is fixable a lot more often than people fear, even though driving is what shifts the trouble from that tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart it.

## Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

It's not a change, so a drain then flush carried out properly doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty.

An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

## Two-stroke oil in the tank, and then home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a distinct problem and it doesn't replace what petrol has thinned.

Petrol remains in that tank later on, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no respite from it.

## Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

You do not need one. Your car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a dealership.

## Waiting next to it?

Leave the engine switched off.

Already driven it? Then stop somewhere sensible, switch off, and let it stay that way.

Cold and parked, a car is in the best position available — and people fear this much more than the recovery rate warrants.

Draining wrongly fuelled motors, Primrose Hill and the rest of Somerset, wherever they are. Kerbside. Forecourt. Home.
