# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Primrose?

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled vehicles where they are, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, across Primrose and the remainder of Tyne and Wear. The first thing to do is not to start the motor. When your engine has not yet run and the fuel is still sitting in your tank, a drain is almost always all it takes, and the coming few minutes determine that, not how much was put in.

Our technicians can show you what your next move is. Call us — this comes before anything else.

## What to do next about petrol in a diesel

- While you drive, the pump and the injectors wear down. That is why you never fire it up, and why you never trust it once it has started. The trick about petrol in a diesel specifically — the point people get wrong — is that it pulls away normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine normally won't run at all, which stops the person and stops the wear with them. This one lets you carry on.

- Leave your ignition off also. Diesel does two roles: it combusts, and before it ignites it greases that high-pressure pump and the injectors. Petrol does the first but not the second. Flicking the car's ignition on is commonly all it takes to prime your system, which draws that petrol out of your tank and into just those components.

- Don't put diesel on top to dilute it. A diesel fuel system will not accept petrol by percentage in the way that advice implies, and topping up clears nothing — it just hands you a bigger tank of the same blend. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is just petrol.

- Stay where you are if you reasonably can. A vehicle that has not shifted is the simplest one to deal with, and our team would sooner get to an odd location than have it started. If you are parked on the verge on Hylton Road, switch the hazards on and keep it there.

- Find out where you are before ringing. A postcode that starts NE32 5, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise the technician circles instead of arriving.

- Three answers shape the whole call-out: the liquid you tipped in, the approximate measure involved, and whether anything has been running since. The number is 0333 366 0103.

## Pump-side drains for petrol in a diesel

A big part of this work ends up completed at the pump, because that's where it often kicks off.

If you are still on the forecourt at Esso, that's normally where the drain gets done — our technicians work on station forecourts regularly, with the site's agreement.

A forecourt is the single place it is caught before your engine has started.

Anywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the car was fired up and driven to get there, which means fuel was sucked from the tank, through the filter then into the high-pressure pump. That is not a calamity, and our engineers can still deal with it where it sits. It does mean the lines and your filter need flushing as well as that tank, and that is settled by the few seconds between seeing your receipt and going for the key.

Attendants will normally pitch in pushing it clear of the pump, which lets the next driver get through. Take the offer.

Rolling the car four bays doesn't justify starting it.

The complicated part is the bay, not the fuel. Cars either side of you, a trolley shelter behind, and from time to time a height bar on the way in that settles whether a van can get to you at all — so when you ring from a car park like the one outside Heron Foods, mention how much space there is round you and which way round the vehicle is. Those we visit regularly. Should there be no space to work next to your diesel BMW 3 Series, it gets shifted with your engine off, and not out of pedantry over a handful of seconds of running: priming happens at every start, more of that blend departs the tank for the pump, and two shunts into a better space have silently made a bigger job of what was merely a vehicle sitting still.

## Primrose and the areas near it

Primrose is a residential suburb, and our vans get out to the town and to the areas around it on the same runs: Hedworth, Monkton, Fellgate, Brockley Whins and Campbell Park.

Not on the list? That says nothing. The places above are just the closest few, and nearly all locations across Tyne and Wear have a page of their own somewhere on our site.

Close to the boundary, or anywhere the satnav misreads? Ring us and ask rather than assuming.

The map marks the area the page spans.

Your car never needs to come to us. Our technicians work throughout every bit of it — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

## Stuck at the kerbside in Primrose

A chance to pull in anywhere suitable does not fall to everybody.

Hazards on at a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge beside Langley Terrace since you noticed after setting off — our engineers take that call regularly enough that it's the ordinary kind.

Out of the vehicle when it's not safe to sit there, with it if it is.

Never restart it to reach a nicer spot. It will go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging draws the mix deeper into your fuel system.

Carrying on causes your car far more harm than our van coming out to an inconvenient spot, and that's no problem for us.

Leave it overnight. Call us first thing. Nothing about a diesel Mercedes C-Class standing in the car park at Prince of Wales degrades as it sits, tank of petrol or not, and the job remains an easy one right up till the moment it gets driven home. The question our engineers arrive with is about that drive there: a cold motor over a short run is where petrol combusts least well, and whatever fails to burn can work its way past the rings into the sump.

## Already run it? Petrol in a diesel after some miles

Your A194(M) is the road that matters here, and lies under 3 miles from Primrose.

A drop in power, an uneven idle, some smoke: those are the signs when they come, rather than a clean stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will usually get you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong at all.

Get off at the first safe junction, switch off, and never start the car to reposition.

Long trip? Anything close to the under 10 miles to the nearest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that arrived at by the contamination. Say that on the call, since it affects what goes in our van.

## Where is Primrose?

Primrose is a suburban area located on the riverside in Tyne and Wear, with a relatively low elevation of 17 metres. Primrose sits near the city of Newcastle upon Tyne, approximately 5 miles away, and is close to other nearby places such as Hedworth, Monkton, and Fellgate. Primrose has a population of around 4907 people and is characterised by predominantly semi-detached housing.

## When our technicians arrive with you around Primrose: what follows

- Our engineers establish what was put in, how much, and if the engine has run. The replies change the work, which is why we ask before giving a price.

- That tank is cleared of it.

- Fuel lines are purged through and your filter cleared, leaving nothing in the system that created any of this.

- Our technicians put fresh diesel in and prime your system.

- Our engineers fire it up and check it runs correctly on new diesel.

From that point, you're ready to drive away.

Everything is done where the car is, so it never needs to go to a garage, and when it has been noticed early, lasting damage is very unusual.

Leave the Audi A3 near St Peter and phone us. We are direct about not driving on since a wearing pump sheds, and what it loses passes on with the fuel to the fuel injectors further along.

## A separate job: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Primrose

If what went in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the first step is unchanged — don't fire it up — but the problem is not.

Weakened diesel, and no protection left for the system that depends on it. That is petrol.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to rust and build-up in its place.

Frequently the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the detail lives on its own Primrose page. Both are ours to deal with.

A vehicle you collected two days ago gets driven further before anybody notices anything, which is the hire and courtesy problem in one sentence — and how far it went is what decides the amount of petrol reaching your injectors. Nothing sloppy about the mistake itself: a current diesel filler neck takes the narrower petrol nozzle with almost no resistance, so new places see most of these. Phone us from wherever you are, near St Matthew's RC Church or not, and we will get to the Vauxhall Astra.

## What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost around Primrose

What moves the price is listed below, as this job isn't one job and we cannot frankly put a single figure on this page.

- Whether the engine has been run or driven. This is the key one.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.

- AdBlue or petrol, whichever was put in.

- Access: the vehicle's position, and whether working on it there is sensible for our van.

The car, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm rather than as a range.

Car at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is ideal for that.

Your filter, the lines, your pump and the rail: that's where that blend is once a diesel has run, and it does not come back out with that tank contents. So your tank isn't where most of the problem waits by this point, and a diesel Ford Kuga that got near Monkton Stadium needs your system flushed rather than emptied.

## Petrol in diesel: frequent queries in Primrose

## I am on a forecourt around Primrose. Can you drain the vehicle here?

Yes, and it's where a large share of this work happens.

Our engineers attend Morrisons and the other forecourts locally regularly, with the station's consent — tell us which one you are at when you ring and we will tell you if our technicians can work there.

## Is there a sensible quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Whether the engine has run matters a lot more, though the ratio matters too, rather than the litres.

An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate scenarios, of course. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is whether the system has had that mix pulled through it.

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Switch off somewhere sensible, and keep it that way after you stop.

Driving is what takes the issue from that tank into the pump and injectors — but it's fixable a lot more frequently than motorists fear, and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart it.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

It isn't an alteration, and so a drain then flush carried out correctly doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty.

What is likelier to start a dispute is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for your engine to remain off.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. It belongs to a distinct fault from a different era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind puts back.

Your tank still has petrol in it afterwards, and the pump still has to cope with it.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Wherever the car is, our engineers drain and flush it there, so a trip to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

## You, and your vehicle, still together?

Do not switch your engine on again.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, turn off, and no restarting the car later.

A parked, cold motor is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from far more commonly than people assume.

Throughout Tyne and Wear and in Primrose: call-out fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the kerbside.
