# Petrol in a Diesel Car in Puddaven

Never fire up the engine. While the petrol is still in your tank and the engine has not yet been started, a fuel drain is nearly always all it takes — and that gets decided in the next few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled vehicles where they stand, all over Puddaven and the rest of Devon, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive.

Call us so our technicians can tell you what comes from here before you try any more.

## What now? Petrol in a diesel, in order

- Give a petrol engine diesel and it will usually refuse to run at all, so the driver stops there and so does the damage. Feed a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it ticks over, it drives off — fine enough for several miles. People have that reversed, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So do not fire it up. And having started, do not believe it: the fuel system is grinding as you drive.

- Turning the ignition on frequently primes your system, and priming is what moves petrol out of your tank and into your pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps protected on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol manages the burning and none of the lubricating. Leave your ignition alone.

- That guidance assumes a diesel fuel system handles petrol by percentage. It does not. Tip diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you have is a larger tank of the same blend. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.

- A motor that has not moved is the easiest one to sort out, and so stay where you are if you reasonably can. Stopped on the verge on Sawpit Lane? Hazards on, and keep the vehicle there. A difficult place suits us better than a started diesel.

- The van showing up rather than circling hinges on two things: a postcode starting TQ9 6, and whatever is nearest to you with a sign on it. Keep both prepared before you phone.

- Call 0333 366 0103. Let us know what went in, roughly how much, plus if your car has run. Those three details determine the full visit.

The high-pressure fuel pump spent that morning drive running on a liquid that had shed much of the protection it is built around. Diesel lubricates that pump, and the injectors with it, before any of your fuel ignites; petrol does the burning and none of the lubricating. So take a diesel Volkswagen Golf, topped up at quarter past eight, driven in to work, and parked standing at Totnes till the penny drops around eleven. Three hours of sitting have changed nothing about it. The few miles before that changed a lot, which is why the question we ask you is about distance rather than time. Ring us. Keep the car just where it sits.

## At the forecourt: draining petrol from your diesel

The work begins at a forecourt, mostly. Regularly the job wraps up on site as well.

If you're still at the forecourt at Texaco, that's typically where this drain takes place — we operate on garage forecourts routinely, with the station's consent.

Before your engine has started — a garage is the one location the mistake ends up stopped.

Fuel sucked out of your tank and through the fuel filter, right to your high-pressure pump, is what happens when the motor is started and your car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush covers the filter and the lines along with your tank. That is still not a catastrophe, and our engineers sort it out where the vehicle stands. What settles it is whether the ignition was reached for in the seconds after the receipt was checked.

Away from the petrol pump, the next motorist can get past — so yes, let the attendants help you push it. Very much worth doing.

Four car lengths isn't worth a start.

If you've put petrol in your diesel Renault Megane in Puddaven and you are now sat at Happy Apple with a boot packed with shopping, phone us. Don't crank it a second time to exit the space. We will come out to you, drain the tank, flush your fuel lines and put fresh diesel in so you can head home. A mile or so at gentle throttle uses little diesel, which is why those are usually the simple cases.

## Puddaven plus the towns next to it

Being a small village, Puddaven gets a routine visit, while the areas close by come with it on that same trip: Dartington and Cott, Longcause and Swallowfields, Shinners Bridge.

If yours isn't on that list it doesn't mean we never come — there are dedicated pages for most places across Devon, and the ones listed above are simply the closest neighbours.

Assuming is the mistake to avoid, particularly on the border or anywhere a satnav fails. Phone to enquire.

This map is the ground the page covers.

All of it is ground our engineers cover: a kerbside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You don't move the vehicle anywhere.

## Stuck at the kerbside near Puddaven

Not everybody has a safe place to pull in.

A normal call for us instead of an odd one: realised after setting off, finished up by the verge on Redlake or at a lay-by with the hazards going.

Clear of the motor if it isn't safe to wait inside, beside it when it is.

Never fire it up to reach a better location. It'll go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls the mix deeper into the system.

Driving on does the vehicle far more harm than our van driving out to an awkward spot, and that's no bother for us.

## Driven it already? Pull in, and see below

Here is where the local M5 counts, under 25 miles from Puddaven.

Lost power, a rough idle, smoke: those are the signs when they appear, instead of a tidy stop — and a misfilled diesel will often get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong at all.

Take the first junction that is sensible, pull up there, and don't restart it to reposition.

On a longer drive — anything approaching the under 25 miles to the closest city — take it the contamination has been through your filter, the pump and the injectors, and mention it when you phone. It affects what our technicians bring.

Here's the whole process. Diesel needs enough body to seal the fine tolerances it goes through, and petrol takes that away. That's it. Which accounts for the ordinary Beacon Copse call — a diesel Ford Focus, out there without a murmur and back down on power, uneven at idle, perhaps a bit of smoke. Injection systems work hydraulically as well as chemically, and so your fuel has to hold pressure and not just burn; diluted, it bleeds past those tolerances instead of building, and delivery comes poorer, later, less even than your engine was built about. Not a failing engine, though. Fuel that has stopped behaving like diesel. Put that right and it stops.

## About Puddaven

Puddaven is a locality situated on the riverside in Devon, with an elevation of 36 metres and a population of around 924 residents. Puddaven is characterized by its predominantly detached housing stock, reflecting its relatively rural setting. Puddaven lies near several other small places, including Dartington, Cott, and Longcause, and is within commuting distance of Plymouth, which is 19.5 miles away.

## When our engineers get to you in Puddaven: what we do

- The replies shape the work, which is why our engineers ask before giving a price: what was put in, how much of it, and if the motor has run.

- Your tank gets emptied of everything.

- Fuel lines are cleaned through and the filter cleared, leaving nothing in the fuel system that caused any of this.

- The fuel system gets bled, on new diesel.

- When it is turned on, we make sure it runs correctly on new diesel.

That has the car ready to drive away.

Our engineers do all of it wherever the car has ended up, which means it never needs to go to a garage, and if it has been noticed early, it's very unusual for there to be permanent damage.

About as well as this goes, once your engine has turned: away from the pumps, receipt read, and the diesel Mercedes C-Class parked near Follaton Village Hall scarcely two streets on. Ring us, and leave the car off. A short drive does genuinely help. It was still a start and still a drive, though, and so the filter and your pump have had diluted fuel through them — hence rinsing the fuel lines instead of only emptying your tank.

## Puddaven AdBlue removal is a separate job

Do not crank it: that first instruction stands whether what got in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is the issue itself.

Petrol weakens your diesel and removes the protection the fuel system depends on.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it causes corrosion and deposits in its place.

AdBlue removal in Puddaven has a page of its own with the details on it, including why it is often the more serious of the two. We cover both.

## Paying for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Puddaven

Our technicians cannot put one figure on this page frankly, since the job isn't one job. What changes it:

- This is the key one: whether your engine has been started, or driven.

- Wrong fuel in, against what the tank takes — that proportion.

- Whether it is petrol or AdBlue.

- Where is it? And can a van reach it and work there sensibly?

Tell us your car, the quantity and if it has run, and you'll get a firm answer rather than a range.

For the car at home that is going nowhere and isn't pressing, is fine too.

Somebody sure of themselves will tell you to drain it then put clean diesel in. Half right, that. Try it on a diesel Citroen C3 by Sheep and your engine will start — which is exactly why it sounds like sense. Here's the trouble: there's petrol left in the filter and the feed lines, and the first thing the motor does is pull it back through the pump once more. Emptying a tank achieves nothing about fuel that already left your tank. Phone us. The system gets flushed, the fuel filter comes off where there's one worth removing, and that is what separates a repaired vehicle from one that simply starts.

## Petrol in diesel: frequent questions around Puddaven

## Fuel drains on a Puddaven petrol station forecourt

Yes, and it is where a good portion of this work happens.

Often, provided the site consents: Morrisons, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that location is something our technicians answer there and then.

## A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Whether your motor has run counts much more, though the ratio counts too, instead of the litres.

An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct situations, definitely. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether the system has had that blend sucked through it.

## Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What then?

Switch off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop.

Driving shifts the issue along — out of your tank, into your pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really helpful thing left to you isn't restarting it.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A drain and flush carried out properly is not a change and doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty.

An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

## Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a distinct issue and it does not restore what petrol has diluted.

Your tank still has petrol in it after that, and your pump still has to put up with it.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

No. Our technicians drain and flush the car wherever it is, so there is no need to take it to a dealership.

## Standing next to it?

Switched off is the way the car remains.

Switch it off somewhere safe then keep it off, if you have already driven it.

A parked, cold motor is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from much more often than drivers expect.

Emptying misfuelled motors, Puddaven and the rest of Devon, wherever they are. Kerbside. Forecourt. Home.
