# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Quality Corner? Don't Start It

If you have not fired up the motor yet, do not. A drain and nothing more is almost always what a motor requires while the fuel is still inside the tank and your engine has not yet been started, which is why it's the following few minutes that count, not how much got in. Petrol in Diesel comes to your car wherever it has ended up in Quality Corner or the rest of Cumbria, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and cleans it there.

One ring our way is plenty: we can show you what follows after this. Make that straight away.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to try first

- Feed a petrol engine diesel and it will usually not run at all, and so the person stops there and so does the damage. Give a diesel petrol and the car starts, it ticks over, it drives off — all right for a couple of miles. Motorists have that backwards, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So never fire it up. And having started, do not rely on it: your fuel system is wearing while you drive.

- Leave the ignition off also. Diesel has two roles: it combusts, and before it combusts it protects your high-pressure pump and those injectors. Petrol manages the first but not the second. Flicking the car's ignition on is often sufficient to prime the system, which draws the petrol out of your tank and into just those components.

- That guidance presumes a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol by percentage. It won't. Pour diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you end with is a bigger tank of the same mix. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.

- A motor that has not moved is the quickest one to sort out, so remain where you are if you reasonably can. Parked on the verge on Beech Grove? Hazards on, then keep the car there. An awkward spot works for us better than a started motor.

- Know where you are before phoning. A postcode beginning CA28 6, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise the technician circles rather than turning up.

- What got in, about how many litres, plus whether the car has fired — those three answers shape the whole job. Phone 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

The trip back would about double it, for no gain at all. One commute has already put a real amount of petrol-thinned diesel through the high-pressure pump of that Volkswagen Passat. So keep the vehicle where it stands. Phone us from the platform if that is quicker — no one needs you hovering over the car at Parton whilst we get on, and tonight beats finding out on Monday.

## Can petrol be taken out of your diesel on a forecourt?

A fair part of the work is done at a forecourt, since that's where it often kicks off.

Still at BP? Then that's generally where it takes place. Station forecourts are routine for us, with the agreement of the owner.

A forecourt is the only place it gets stopped before your engine has run.

We can still put it right where it sits, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, your car has been switched on and driven there, and that drew fuel through your filter and into the high-pressure pump, right from your tank. None of that is a calamity, though the flush then has to go past the tank to the lines and your filter, and the few seconds between seeing the receipt and going for the keys are what determine that.

Move it out of the way if the attendants suggest it, and they generally will. The next driver gets by the pump, and that is worth doing.

Firing it over four vehicle lengths? Don't.

We'll come out to you, empty the tank, purge your fuel lines and put fresh diesel in so you can drive away. So if petrol went into the diesel Skoda Octavia in Quality Corner and you're sat outside Tesco with a boot loaded with shopping, ring us — and do not start the vehicle once more to leave the bay. A mile or so at gentle throttle draws very little fuel, so these are often the straightforward cases.

## Quality Corner plus the towns beside it

Being a coastal area, Quality Corner has a routine visit, and the areas nearby go along on that same round: Bleachgreen and Bransty, Scilly Bank and Harras, Parton.

Our technicians still come. Those places above are just the nearest neighbours, and a page exists for the majority of places across Cumbria, so an absence from the list isn't an absence from our coverage.

Ring us to check instead of presuming — boundaries particularly, and wherever the satnav might get wrong.

The ground the page includes is on this map.

Roadside, forecourt, private drive, car park: all of that is territory our engineers work on, and none of it needs the vehicle to move to us.

## Broken down on the roadside near Quality Corner

Not everybody has a suitable spot to pull over.

If you realised after setting off and finished up by the verge on Ash Grove, or at a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights on, that is a normal call for us instead of a rare one.

Clear of the motor if it's not sensible to wait in it, beside it if it is.

Do not restart your engine to limp the vehicle somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging that mixture further into the fuel system.

However awkward the spot, it's no bother for us to come to it, and that's a lot better for your car than pressing on.

## Run it already? Pull in, then read below

Here is where the local M6 comes in — under 50 miles from Quality Corner.

A drop in power, an uneven idle, smoke: those are the symptoms when they appear, rather than a neat stop — and a misfuelled diesel will often get you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong at all.

Come off at the first safe exit, turn off, and don't start the car to reposition.

It changes what our technicians bring, so say so when you ring: on a longer trip — anything approaching the under 50 miles to the nearest city — assume the petrol has been through your filter, your pump and your injectors.

## Where is Quality Corner?

Quality Corner is a small locality on the coast of Cumbria, situated near the towns of Bleachgreen and Bransty. Quality Corner has a population of around 1160 people and is characterized by semi-detached housing. Quality Corner sits at an elevation of 107 metres, looking out over the coastal landscape. Quality Corner is located approximately 34 miles from Carlisle and 255 miles from London.

## Our call-out in Quality Corner, step by step

- Three things get checked before any quote — the fuel that was put in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.

- That tank is drained of it.

- Our engineers flush the lines and clean your filter, so what is remaining in the system is not what caused the problem.

- Your system gets primed, on clean diesel.

- It's fired up with new diesel in it, and our technicians check that it's running correctly.

From that point, you're ready to set off.

We do all of this wherever the vehicle has come to a stop, which means it never has to go to a garage, and if it has been spotted early, it is very unusual for there to be lasting damage.

Rarely the problem, the spot. On-street is the usual location we work, and a narrow parking space is far preferable to a motor that has been driven somewhere more handy. What does help, when you ring from close to Rosehill Theatre, is three things: the side the filler is on, whether our van can park alongside without blocking the road, and whether anything has run since you filled up. Then your Dacia Duster gets emptied, your filter changed where a serviceable one exists, your lines purged and clean fuel put through the full system — since by now the worst of it is in your lines, not the tank.

## A separate matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Quality Corner

If what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the opening rule is the same — do not fire it up — but the fault is not.

Petrol dilutes your diesel and removes the protection your fuel system relies on.

Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings rust and deposits.

AdBlue removal in Quality Corner has a page of its own with the detail on it, including why it is often the more serious of the two. We cover both.

Rattling? Lumpy idle? White smoke, throttle gone soft? That is your wrongly fuelled Vauxhall Astra, a diesel, saying what is wrong with it. Stop wherever you happen to be, maybe close to Moresby Parish Village Hall, and leave the restarting alone.

## How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain around Quality Corner?

Our engineers can't put one price on this page frankly, since the job is not one job. What shifts it:

- Whether the engine has been started or driven. This is the big one.

- How much of the wrong fuel got in, against how much the tank can hold.

- Whether it is unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where is it? And can a van reach it and work there sensibly?

A firm answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: the car, the quantity, and if it has run.

Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is fine for that.

What occurs next is the problem. The motor at once sucks the petrol still waiting in the filter and the feed lines back round through your pump a second time, because draining a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Drain it and put new diesel in, a person certain will tell you — and that suggestion is half right, because do it to a diesel Ford Kuga parked up, Parton Village Hall say, and the thing starts, which is what makes it sound sensible. Call us instead. We flush your circuit and take the fuel filter off where the vehicle has a workable one, and that is the difference between the car being repaired and the car just starting.

## Petrol in diesel questions from Quality Corner drivers

## Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Quality Corner?

Much of what our technicians do happens nowhere else. So yes.

Routinely, provided the site agrees: Tesco, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that place is something we answer on the spot.

## How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Litres aren't the yardstick. Proportion is, and much more than either, it counts whether anything has been run.

An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct scenarios, of course. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is if your fuel system has had that mix drawn through it.

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the vehicle

Pull over somewhere sensible, turn off, then leave the car off.

It's salvageable far more commonly than people expect, even though driving is what moves the trouble from the tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

## Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

It isn't a change, so a drain then flush carried out properly does not void a manufacturer's warranty.

Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one, which is another good reason to leave the car switched off.

## Two-stroke oil in the tank, and then home?

What petrol has diluted is not restored by two-stroke oil, which is an old fix for a distinct problem. So no.

Petrol stays in that tank after that, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no break from it.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Wherever the vehicle is, our technicians drain and clean it there, so a trip to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

## You, and your car, still together?

Keep the car shut off.

Turn it off somewhere sensible then keep it off, if you have already driven it.

This is recoverable from far more regularly than drivers expect, and a stationary, cold vehicle is the best position to be in.

Mobile fuel draining in Quality Corner and across Cumbria — at the roadside, on the forecourt or at home.
