# Queensferry: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

If you have not fired up the motor yet, don't. A drain and nothing else is almost always what a vehicle needs while the petrol is still sitting in the tank and your engine has not yet turned over, which is why it's the coming few minutes that count, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel goes to the vehicle wherever it has ended up in Queensferry or the remainder of City of Edinburgh, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, and drains and flushes it there.

Call us and our engineers shall explain what comes next before you try much else.

## What to do now about petrol in a diesel

- Give a petrol motor diesel and it will usually refuse to run at all, so the driver stops there and so does the wear. Feed a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it idles, it drives off — all right for several miles. Most people have that backwards, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So never crank it. And having started, don't believe it: your fuel system is grinding as you drive.

- Diesel ignites, and before it combusts it lubricates — the high-pressure fuel pump, the injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave the car's ignition be too: flicking it on is often all it takes to prime that system, and priming carries petrol from that tank into just those parts.

- Don't pour diesel on top to thin it. A diesel fuel system doesn't cope with petrol by percentage as that guidance suggests, and topping up takes out nothing — it simply gives you a larger tank of the same blend. The grade makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.

- Stay put if it's sensible to. Hazards on, motor off, keep the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Stoneyflatts Crescent, anywhere — an odd location for us is better than a started engine, and nothing is easier for us to handle than a motor that never moved.

- Before you phone, gather your position. Anything closest to you with a name on it, plus a postcode beginning EH30 9 — that's what determines whether the van arrives or circles.

- Three replies determine the entire visit: the fuel you tipped in, the approximate volume of it, plus whether anything has been going since. The line is 0333 366 0103.

The drive in is what pushed weakened diesel through the pump. Sitting still has drawn nothing. Petrol in a diesel Volkswagen Passat, parked outside Dalmeny all day, waits inert in that tank whilst it waits. Phone us first — before the keys go in.

## Can petrol be drained out of a diesel on a forecourt?

Pumps are where the job mostly starts, and where a large portion of it finishes.

If you're still on the forecourt at Shell, that's generally where this drain takes place — we operate on petrol station forecourts regularly, with the owner's permission.

Nowhere except the forecourt can this be spotted with the engine still unrun.

Our technicians can still deal with it where it is, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, the vehicle has been switched on and driven there, and that sucked fuel through your filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump, right from your tank. None of that is a catastrophe, though the flush then has to reach past that tank to the fuel lines and your filter, and the few seconds between checking the till receipt and going for the key are what settle that.

The staff will generally offer to move the vehicle away from the pump so the next driver can get through. That is worth doing.

Moving the car four bays does not merit firing it.

## Coverage in Queensferry

Queensferry is a coastal town, and so our technicians are out to the town and to the villages around it on the usual rounds: Port Edgar, Dalmeny, North Queensferry, Almondhill and Newton.

There are dedicated pages for most places in City of Edinburgh, and the ones mentioned above are simply the closest neighbours — so yours being absent from the list means nothing at all about if our technicians come.

Assuming is the thing to avoid, particularly on the boundary or somewhere your satnav goes wrong. Contact us and check.

The area this page includes sits on the map.

Every bit of it is ground our engineers work: a roadside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You don't drive your vehicle anywhere.

## Stopped at the roadside somewhere in Queensferry?

Not everyone has the chance to stop anywhere suitable.

Hazards going at a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge of A9000 as you noticed after setting off — we take that call regularly enough that it's the usual kind.

Out of the car if it's not wise to wait inside, with it when it is.

Do not restart the motor to limp the car somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling that blend further into the fuel system.

However difficult the location, it's no bother for us to get to it, and that's a lot better for your car than carrying on.

Leave it overnight. Phone us next morning. Nothing about a diesel BMW 1 Series sitting in the car park by Queens Crossing Brewers Fayre worsens as it sits, tank of petrol or not, and this job remains a simple one right up till the moment it gets taken home. The question our technicians bring is about that run there: a cold motor over a short hop is where petrol burns least well, and whatever fails to burn can find its way past the rings into the engine oil.

## Petrol in a diesel, and the car has travelled

This is where the local M90 counts, under a mile away from Queensferry.

It will usually take you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it is smoke, an uneven idle and power ebbing away — not a clean stop. Misfilled diesels seldom give you one of those.

The first safe exit is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone.

Suppose the worst of that on a long drive. Anything near the under 10 miles to the nearest city, and the contamination has been through the filter, through the pump, through your injectors. Say so when you call. What our engineers bring differs.

Diesel has to be thick enough to seal the precision components it runs through, and petrol thins it. That's the whole process, and it accounts for the ordinary Inchcolm Park call: a diesel Vauxhall Insignia that drove out there without complaint and came back down on power, uneven at idle, possibly smoking a little. A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically — it requires your fuel to hold pressure, not merely to burn — so when your fuel weakens, pressure that should build then stay built starts leaking past clearances instead, and your engine gets a poorer, later, less even delivery than it was engineered about. None of that is the motor failing, which is the bit worth hearing: it's your fuel no longer acting like diesel, and it stops when the fuel is put right.

## A bit about Queensferry

Queensferry is a coastal town in the City of Edinburgh, situated on the southern shore of the Firth of Forth at an elevation of 42 metres. Queensferry has a mix of housing types, but terraced housing is predominant, and the town is close to nearby places like Port Edgar and Dalmeny. Queensferry is located near the iconic Forth Bridges and has a population of around 9175 people. Queensferry sits approximately 6.3 miles from Dunfermline, the nearest city.

## Once we get to you in Queensferry: what follows

- We ask first, quote after. What went in? How much? Has your motor run? Those answers alter what the work actually is.

- Away flows the contaminated mixture.

- Fuel lines are purged through and your filter cleaned, leaving nothing in your system that started any of this.

- Your system gets primed, on new diesel.

- Our technicians start the car and confirm it runs smoothly on new diesel.

The car is then ready for you to pull away.

There is no need for a workshop at any point, since the work is all done where the car is, and when it's caught soon, permanent damage is very rare.

Our engineers clean the fuel lines instead of only draining the tank, and the reason is that diluted fuel has already got to your filter and the pump: it was a start and a drive, however short. The hop really helps — pulled off the forecourt, receipt read, a diesel Volvo XC60 parked up near Forth Bridges Contact and Education Centre a couple of hundred yards later is about as well as this goes once the engine has turned. Call us and leave it off.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank by mistake, around Queensferry?

Don't fire it up: that opening step holds whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is the fault itself.

Weakened diesel, and no protection left for the fuel system that relies on it. That's petrol.

AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it causes rust and residue in its place.

Both are ours. There is a separate Queensferry page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

## How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Queensferry?

One number would not be honest here, as this isn't one job. These are the things that change it:

- This is the main one: whether your motor has been started, or driven.

- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, compared with how much that tank can hold.

- Whether it was petrol or AdBlue.

- Where is it? And can a technician get to it and work there sensibly?

Tell us the vehicle, the amount and whether it has run, and you will get a straight answer instead of a range.

Not time-critical, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then works.

Someone confident will tell you to drain it and put clean diesel in. Half right, that. Try it on a diesel Skoda Superb close to CWGC Cross of Sacrifice and the engine will start — which is precisely why it sounds like sense. Here's the trouble: there's petrol left in the filter and the feed lines, and the first thing the motor does is draw it back through your pump a second time. Emptying a tank achieves nothing about fuel that already left the tank. Call us. Your circuit gets purged, your filter comes off where there is one worth removing, and that is what separates a repaired motor from one that only starts.

## Petrol in diesel questions from Queensferry motorists

## At a petrol station around Queensferry, can you do a fuel drain there?

Plenty of what our technicians do gets done nowhere else. So yes.

Agreement from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like BP is somewhere we are regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you'll hear if working there is possible.

## Is there a sensible quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Ratio settles it rather than litres — and more than either, whether your motor has run.

An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different situations, certainly. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is whether your fuel system has had that blend pulled through it.

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that.

Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does move the issue out of your tank then into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays recoverable a lot more often than people assume.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

No. Carried out correctly, clearing and cleaning is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it.

What's likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the engine to remain off.

## Two-stroke oil in the tank, and then home?

What petrol has weakened is not put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old fix for a different fault. So no.

The pump still has to put up with it, because your tank still has petrol in it afterwards.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

There's no need to bring it to a dealership, because our technicians drain and clean your car wherever it is.

## Is the vehicle still with you?

Your engine remains off.

Turn it off somewhere sensible and leave it off, if you have already driven it.

Cold and stationary, a motor is in the best position available — and drivers fear this much more than the recovery rate warrants.

Clearing misfilled cars, Queensferry and the rest of City of Edinburgh, wherever they are. Kerbside. Forecourt. Home.
