# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Rainbow Hill?

With the tank still carrying the fuel and the motor not yet run, almost every job takes only a drain, so keep your engine off. That result is settled in the minutes right after the fill-up, rather than by the amount that went in. Across Rainbow Hill and the remainder of Worcestershire, Petrol in Diesel drains your car and flushes it where it stands, whether by a roadside, on a driveway or at a forecourt.

Contact us and we shall show you what happens after that before you do anything else.

## Your first five steps: petrol in a diesel

- Give a petrol motor diesel and it will usually fail to run at all, so the driver stops there and so does the damage. Feed a diesel petrol and the car starts, it ticks over, it moves off — fine enough for a few miles. Motorists have that reversed, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So never start the car. And if started, never depend on it: the fuel system is grinding as you drive.

- Diesel combusts, and before it combusts it lubricates — the high-pressure fuel pump, the injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave the car's ignition alone too: flicking it on is frequently sufficient to prime the system, and priming draws petrol from your tank into just those components.

- Never dilute it. Diesel put on top gets rid of nothing, so all you get is more of what was already there, since percentage is not how a diesel fuel system handles petrol. Super unleaded? Simply petrol. The octane makes no difference.

- A motor that hasn't shifted is the easiest one to deal with, so stay where you are if you reasonably can. Pulled up on the verge on Lansdowne Road? Hazards on, then keep the car there. An awkward spot suits us better than a started motor.

- A van turning up rather than circling depends on two things: a postcode that starts WR3 8, and whatever is closest to you with a label on it. Keep both ready before you phone.

- Phone 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three points — what was put in, roughly how many litres, and if the car has been turned over. Your responses decide all that comes after.

Quarter past eight. A quick top-up on the drive in. Around eleven it occurs to you, and by then your diesel Volkswagen Passat has stood at Worcester Shrub Hill for three hours. Phone us and keep the car where it stands. What counts is the run in, since diesel both ignites and — before that — lubricates the pump and the fuel injectors, while petrol only ever combusts. Those couple of miles worked your pump on a fluid stripped of much of its protection, and no amount of sitting in a car park adds any of it back. Hence the thing we ask about distance rather than hours standing, and hence the request to leave your keys alone till our engineers get there.

## Can petrol be taken out of a diesel on the forecourt?

Plenty of the work begins at the pump, so a big portion of it ends up done on site.

The drain usually happens right there. Still on the forecourt at Esso? Given the site's agreement, that is somewhere our engineers work, and regularly.

A filling station is the single location it can be halted before your engine has started.

The few seconds between reading the receipt and going for the keys determine how much needs cleaning. Everywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the car was started and moved to get there, so fuel was drawn from your tank, through the filter then into the high-pressure pump. That means the lines and the fuel filter need cleaning as well as the tank. It is not a calamity, and we can still deal with it where your car stands.

The attendants will generally help you roll the car clear of the petrol pump so the next customer can get through. It is worth doing.

Cranking the car just for four car lengths? Don't.

The difficult part is the bay, not your fuel. Cars either side of you, a trolley shelter behind, and now and then a height limit on the way in that decides whether a van can get to you at all — so when you ring from a car park like the one outside Co-op Food, mention how much space there is about you and which way round the vehicle is. Those we attend regularly. Should there be no space to work alongside the diesel BMW 3 Series, it gets shifted with the engine off, and not out of fuss over a handful of seconds of running: priming happens at every start, more of that mix exits the tank for the pump, and two shunts into a better space have quietly made a bigger job of what was just a car sitting still.

## Rainbow Hill plus the villages next to it

The same runs get us to Tolladine, Brickfields, Astwood, Ronkswood and Worcester as well as Rainbow Hill, which is a residential suburb.

Not on that list? It means nothing. The places above are just the closest few, and nearly all locations in Worcestershire have a page of their own elsewhere on this site.

Ring us to check rather than presuming, particularly where you are on the boundary or anywhere your satnav can't find.

Check this map for the area shown here.

All of it is ground we cover: a roadside, a forecourt, a driveway, a car park. You never drive your vehicle anywhere.

## Rainbow Hill: stuck where you parked

Not everyone has the opportunity to stop anywhere sensible.

A normal call for us and not a rare one: noticed after setting off, landed along the verge beside Belmont Street or in a lay-by with your hazards going.

Clear of the car if it isn't sensible to be in it, by it if it is.

Don't fire it up to get to a better location. It will go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls the mix deeper into your fuel system.

We'll send our van to a tricky location without any fuss, and for the vehicle that is far better than driving on.

## Some miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?

Your M5 is the road which matters here, and lies under 3 miles from Rainbow Hill.

A misfuelled diesel will often get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong, and the signs when they appear are generally lost power, a rough idle and some smoke rather than a neat stop.

Come off at the next safe exit, turn off, and never restart the car to move it.

It affects what our technicians bring, and so mention it when you ring: on a longer drive — anything approaching the under a mile to the nearest city — take it the contamination has been through your filter, the pump and the fuel injectors.

Don't drive it home to buy yourself time. You already have it: nothing gets worse whilst the car stands, because a diesel Dacia Duster left at King George's Field is doing none of what it did on the way there. Your pump has stopped turning.

## Rainbow Hill itself

Rainbow Hill is a suburban area located on the riverside in Worcestershire, with a mix of semi-detached housing and other residential properties. Rainbow Hill sits near the city of Worcester, at an elevation of around 54 metres, and is close to nearby places such as Tolladine and Brickfields. Rainbow Hill is situated within the West Midlands region, approximately 101 miles from London. Rainbow Hill has a population of around 6303 people, living in a variety of housing types, predominantly semi-detached homes.

## What we do when we reach you in Rainbow Hill

- Our technicians establish what was put in, how much, and whether the engine has run. The answers alter the work, which is why our engineers ask before pricing.

- Our engineers clear your tank of the contaminated fuel.

- Our technicians rinse the lines and clean your filter, and so what's remaining in your system is not what created the trouble.

- The fuel system gets bled, on fresh diesel.

- It's fired up with fresh diesel in it, and our engineers make sure that it's running correctly.

At that point it is ready to drive away.

Permanent damage is very unusual when it has been spotted soon, and since everything is done where the car is, it never needs to go to a garage.

Emptying your Mercedes A-Class, changing the filter where there is a serviceable one, flushing the fuel lines, putting clean fuel through the entire circuit: that's this job, and it is shaped by the worst of it resting in the lines rather than in your tank by this point. Three things help when you call from near Rainbow Hill Community Hub — which side the filler is on, whether a technician can stand next to without blocking the road, and whether the engine has run since you filled up. On-street is the usual place we work, and so the location itself is seldom the issue. A narrow parking spot is better than a motor driven somewhere more handy.

## A separate problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Rainbow Hill

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the opening step is unchanged — the motor remains off — while this fault under it's a distinct one altogether.

Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and takes away the lubrication the system relies on.

Rust and deposits are what a diesel tank gets instead, since AdBlue is urea in water.

Both are ours. There is a separate Rainbow Hill page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

A throttle gone dead, white smoke, a lumpy idle, clattering: that is a misfuelled diesel Peugeot 2008 telling you what is wrong. Don't start it to find a better spot — switch off where you have stopped, by St Barnabas or anywhere else.

## What a petrol-in-diesel drain costs around Rainbow Hill

Frankly, no single number belongs on a page like this. This job varies. Here's what varies it:

- Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.

- How much of the wrong fuel went in, judged against how much the tank takes.

- Which was put in: petrol or AdBlue.

- Whether a van can sensibly reach the car and work on it, which depends on where your car is.

The vehicle, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm instead of as a range.

If it isn't time-critical — the car is at home and going nowhere — works too.

## Questions our technicians hear about petrol in diesel in Rainbow Hill

## At a petrol station in Rainbow Hill, can you do a fuel drain there?

Much of what our technicians do gets done nowhere else. So yes.

Tell us which one you're at when you ring and we will tell you whether we can work there. With the station's consent we attend Texaco and the other forecourts nearby routinely.

## A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Litres aren't the measure. Ratio is, and much more than either, it counts if anything has been run.

What settles how much work is needed is whether that mixture has been pulled through your fuel system — because even though five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate situation from five in a full one, either way that is the query.

## Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What then?

Switch off somewhere safe, then keep it that way after you stop.

Driving takes the trouble along — out of the tank, into the pump and injectors. People fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one truly helpful thing left to you isn't restarting the car.

## Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

No. Carried out properly, clearing and cleaning is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it.

Another good reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. It belongs to a distinct fault from a separate era, and petrol has thinned something no oil of that kind puts back.

Petrol stays in that tank later, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no reprieve from it.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Not at all. Our engineers drain and flush your car wherever it is, so there's no need to take it to a franchised dealer.

## Waiting next to it?

Leave the car turned off.

Already driven it? Then stop somewhere sensible, turn off, and let the vehicle remain that way.

Cold and parked, a vehicle is in the best position available — and drivers fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.

Across Worcestershire and in Rainbow Hill: call-out fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the roadside.
