# Rainsough: Petrol in a Diesel Car? Here Is What Happens

Not for a second, and not to move it: your motor stays off. Stop there.

Has not been run? Then petrol in a diesel will usually be a straightforward drain-and-flush job wherever the car has stopped — and nothing decides that more than the next few minutes do.

From now on, in order, wherever you are around Rainsough:

## Motor off: minute one with petrol in a diesel

Work through these in order, first.

- Ignition off, keys out. Turned on, your ignition can prime the system — and priming is what draws petrol out of the tank towards the parts it harms.

- No diesel on top. More fuel in takes away none of that petrol — it only makes you with more of the same blend.

- Hazard lights on. If you are anywhere close to moving traffic, make the vehicle easy to see before you do anything else.

- The attendants will normally help you push it away from the pump. Let them, and roll it by hand — not on the engine, even for a couple of yards.

- Keep your receipt. It shows which fuel went in and roughly how much, which is the first thing we will ask.

Still on the move when you noticed? Come off the M60 at the next junction if that's where you are, under 3 miles from Rainsough, and pull over somewhere safe and not pushing on to the services. Then begin at step one.

## Rainsough fuel drain: has your motor run yet, or not?

What comes after this rests on one answer, and just one.

If your engine has not run at all:

- All the petrol sits in your tank, and only there.

- The job is a drain and a flush, usually done where the vehicle stands.

- Step one matters for exactly this reason: it is the best position to be in.

Run at all, however briefly:

- From that tank, through the fuel filter, into the lines: that is how far the petrol has travelled.

- A longer run carries it all the way to the high-pressure pump and your injectors.

- The further it went, the larger this job — your lines, the fuel filter, and now and then more besides.

The reason the line falls there: diesel protects the high-pressure pump as well as the injectors as it flows through them, and petrol does not.

Nothing is harmed by petrol that's only resting in a tank.

The components that move it are grinding the moment petrol is being pumped.

## Before you call about petrol in a diesel around Rainsough: what our engineers need

Prepare a little, and the van finds you rather than circling.

- Where you are. A postcode beginning M25 9 is the best start.

- A road name is a help: Roman Road, say, or whatever street you've stopped in. A car park does the trick too.

- Describe a car park by what it serves — the one outside Kubus Market, for example — and it is far quicker to find.

- That it's a diesel, along with the make and model of the vehicle.

- What got in. Petrol, or AdBlue. AdBlue is a separate job with its own page for Rainsough, and so tell us which.

- How long the nozzle was in, or the litres from the receipt — whichever tells us how much.

- Whether it has run. Then if it has, how far and how hard.

- Hire or company car? Some contracts want the owner's go-ahead for the work, and getting it before our technicians get there is quicker than after.

Then call 0333 366 0103. If it can wait — the car is at home with going nowhere — does the trick too.

## Rainsough fuel drain on its way? Whilst you wait

In the wait, the damage comes from well-meant help — which is why these matter.

- Wait with the car if it's safe where it is — but if it has stopped somewhere dangerous, you come first: away from the traffic, waiting apart from it.

- A helpful passer-by does not crank it. Nor does anybody checking it still works, or moving it a couple of yards.

- None of that takes the petrol back out — not two-stroke oil, not injector cleaner, not something from the boot. So no additives.

- No home-made clearing. Siphoning petrol into a can by the roadside is risky, and it leaves the fuel that has already gone beyond your tank.

- Keep your ignition off — your windows and your radio too.

## The fuel drain, step by step, after the van gets there

- Fuel, quantity, whether it has run: those answers decide this job, and that is why we give a price after them rather than before.

- Emptying it's how the blend gets taken out of the tank.

- Petrol that has moved beyond the tank sits in your lines if it ran, and your lines are purged to clear it.

- Then your filter: replaced where there is a usable one, cleared where there is not.

- Fresh diesel goes in, and the fuel system is primed.

- The start. With fresh diesel in and the system primed, it's fired up and checked to make sure it runs properly.

Your car has new diesel running through it before we head off.

Lasting damage is very unusual if it has been caught quickly, so the car can go straight back to normal use.

## Back on the road in Rainsough after your fuel drain

- Nothing unusual is needed after a start with clean diesel — ordinary driving will do.

- Pull over and ring us back if anything looks wrong early on — a light on your dash, smoke from the exhaust, an idle that runs rough, or a throttle with a dead spot.

- Your documents covers the query a rental company, fleet manager or insurer may ask: what work was carried out. Keep it.

- The handle's colour isn't the guide to go by next time — the label on the petrol pump is.
