# The Next Steps, in Order: Petrol in a Diesel Car in Raleigh

Pause, and keep the motor off — not on, and not for a second to move the car.

The coming few minutes determine it far more than anything else: petrol in a diesel that has not run usually amounts to emptying and cleaning, on the spot.

Here is the order of things from here, anywhere you are around Raleigh.

## Minute one: petrol in a diesel, motor off

In this order, all before anything else:

- The ignition off, keys out. Switched on, the ignition can prime the system — and priming is what moves petrol out of your tank into the components it harms.

- Do not top it up with diesel. Adding diesel takes out nothing. You end up with a fuller tank of the same mix.

- Make your car easy to see before anything else — hazard lights on — if there's moving traffic anywhere near you.

- By hand, never under the motor: that's how it comes off the pump. Get the forecourt attendants to help you push, however short the miles.

- The first question we will ask is which fuel you put in and about how much — and the receipt shows both. Keep it.

Still on the move when you noticed? Come off the M5 at the next junction if that is where you are, under 50 miles from Raleigh, and pull over somewhere sensible rather than pressing on to the services. Then start at step one.

## The fork in each Raleigh fuel drain: has it run yet?

From this point on, everything comes down to a single answer.

If it has never been started:

- Only your tank has petrol in it so far.

- The work is a simple drain and a flush, usually done where your car is.

- This is the best case — which is the entire point of step one.

If your engine has run, even briefly:

- Petrol has been pulled from your tank, through the fuel filter and into the fuel lines.

- A longer run takes it right through to your high-pressure pump and the injectors.

- Miles is what makes it a bigger job: flushed lines, a filter seen to, and at times more than that.

Petrol does not lubricate. Diesel does, oiling your high-pressure pump and injectors as it passes through, which is why the line falls where it does.

A tank of petrol, left alone, hurts nothing.

Pump the petrol, though, and it wears the very parts doing the moving.

## What to have prepared when you call about petrol in a diesel from Raleigh

A little planning is the difference between a technician that finds you and a technician that goes round.

- Your whereabouts: a postcode starting EX31 4 works best.

- Wherever you have parked, the road's name is useful — whether that's Charles Hudson Lane or somewhere else — and so does the name of a car park.

- Describe a car park by what it serves — the one outside Co-op Food, for example — and it is far easier to find.

- Tell us what the car is — make, model — and check it is diesel.

- Say which got in — petrol or AdBlue — since AdBlue is a separate job, with a page of its own for Raleigh.

- About how much — in litres from your receipt, or by how long the nozzle stayed in.

- Has it run? If so, tell us how far it got, and how it was driven.

- The owner may have to authorise the work under some hire and company agreements — so it is faster to settle whose vehicle it is before we arrive.

Ring 0333 366 0103 then. Email works too if it can wait, with the car left at home, going nowhere.

## The wait for a Raleigh fuel drain, and what to do in it

Stick to these: kindly meant help causes the harm during the wait.

- Wait with your car if it's safe where it is — but if it has stopped somewhere dangerous, you come first: away from the traffic, waiting apart from it.

- Not to roll it a couple of yards, not to check it is all right, not for a passer-by's favour: nobody starts it.

- Additives stay in the boot. Injector cleaner and two-stroke oil draw none of that petrol out a second time.

- Clearing it yourself is not the answer: a can of siphoned petrol on a verge is a danger, and the fuel beyond your tank stays put all the same.

- The ignition remains off. Even for your radio or your windows.

## Van arrived? Your fuel drain, one step at a time

- Three questions. What was put in, how much, and if it has run. The answers decide the job, which is why our quote comes after them but not before.

- That tank is cleared. The contaminated mixture comes out of your tank.

- Petrol that has moved beyond the tank sits in the fuel lines once it ran, and the lines are purged to shift it.

- Where the vehicle has a usable filter, it's changed; if not, cleared.

- Priming comes once clean diesel is in.

- We start it only after fresh diesel has gone in and primed the fuel system, then make sure that it's running properly.

Until it runs on fresh diesel, we remain with it.

If it has been noticed soon, permanent damage is very unusual, and your car goes back to normal driving straight away.

## After your fuel drain: back on the road in Raleigh

- After it's been started on clean fuel, there is nothing special to do: drive normally.

- Pull over and ring us back if anything looks wrong early on — a light on the dash, smoke from your exhaust, an idle that runs rough, or a throttle with a dead spot.

- The work may matter later with a hire firm, an insurer or a fleet manager. Hold on to your documents.

- Next time, check the petrol pump. The label, not the colour of the handle.
