# Raleigh Estate: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

With your tank still holding the petrol and the engine not yet started, nearly every job takes only a drain, so keep the motor off. That result is determined in the minutes straight after filling up, rather than by the amount that got in. Throughout Raleigh Estate and the remainder of Devon, Petrol in Diesel drains your car and cleans it where it stands, whether by a roadside, on a drive or at a forecourt.

Phone so we shall show you what comes from here before you try much else.

## What to do next about petrol in a diesel

- Don't start the car — and don't believe it if it does start. That is the bit most people get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol engine given diesel typically just will not run, and so the motorist stops and the wear ends with them. A diesel filled with petrol normally starts, idles and drives off just fine for a couple of miles. It is not all right. It's grinding your fuel system whenever you drive.

- Diesel ignites, and before it burns it protects — your high-pressure fuel pump, its injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave your ignition alone too: switching it on is frequently enough to prime your system, and priming pulls petrol from that tank into precisely those parts.

- Don't tip diesel on top to thin it. A diesel fuel system does not accept petrol by percentage in the way that guidance assumes, and topping up removes nothing — it merely gives you a fuller tank of the same mix. The grade makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.

- Stay put if it is sensible to. Hazards on, ignition off, keep the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Nilgala Close, anywhere — an awkward place for us trumps a started motor, and nothing is quicker for us to handle than a car that never shifted.

- Get your location prepared before you dial. A postcode starting EX39 3 and whatever is next to you with a label on it is the difference between the van showing up and a van circling.

- Call 0333 366 0103. Tell us what went in, approximately how much, plus if the car has started. These three answers settle the whole job.

## At a forecourt: removing petrol from the diesel

Much of the job starts at a forecourt, which means a fair part of it gets completed on site.

The drain normally gets done on the spot. Still on the forecourt at Morrisons? Given the station's permission, that's a place our engineers work, and routinely.

Before the motor has run — the forecourt is the single location this gets stopped.

We can still sort it out where it is, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, the car has been fired up and driven there, and that drew fuel through the filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump, all the way from your tank. None of that is a disaster, although the flush then has to go past that tank to your lines and your filter, and the few seconds between checking the till receipt and reaching for the key are what determine that.

Move the car out of the way if the staff offer, and they usually will. The next driver gets past the petrol pump, and that's worth doing.

Firing the car just to shift four car lengths isn't.

## Raleigh Estate and the villages next to it

As a residential suburb, Raleigh Estate sees a frequent call, whilst the villages round about go with it on that same journey: Silford and Orchard Hill, Bideford and Buckleigh, Northam.

Our technicians do come. The names above are only the nearest neighbours, and a page is there for nearly all places around Devon, so an absence from the list is not an absence from the coverage.

Ring us to enquire rather than guessing, particularly if you are on the border or somewhere the satnav can't find.

See the map for the patch covered here.

All of that is ground our technicians work: a kerbside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You don't move the car anywhere.

Move the vehicle out of the gateway and sort it out later — that is what someone will say, and it is wrong. Stopped on the zig-zags at St Mary's CofE Primary School, a misfilled diesel Peugeot 308 is a nuisance and nothing worse. Started three more times for good manners, it's no longer a tank problem but a fuel system one, since priming occurs with every start and more petrol goes through the filter on to the pump. Let everyone complain. Ring us.

## Stopped on the kerb somewhere in Raleigh Estate?

Not everybody finds a sensible place to stop.

A common call for us instead of a rare one: worked out after setting off, ended up on the verge of Southcott Road or at a lay-by with the hazard lights going.

Wait with your car if it is safe to sit there, yet clear of the car when it isn't.

Do not start it up to get to a safer place. It'll go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls the blend deeper into the system.

However difficult the spot, it's no trouble for us to get to it, and that's a lot better for the vehicle than driving on.

Never chance it. The trip home from Appledore Inn is perfectly possible, which is exactly the problem — a weakened tank doesn't stop a diesel starting or pulling away, it just grinds the parts your fuel is supposed to lubricate. Call us, and let the Audi A4 stay where it is.

## Run it already? Pull in, then check below

The M5 is the one which counts now, and it lies under 50 miles from Raleigh Estate.

A wrongly fuelled diesel will usually get you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong, and the signs when they appear are usually a drop in power, a lumpy idle and smoke rather than a clean stop.

The first sensible exit is the one to take. Turn off there, then leave the restarting alone.

Long trip? Anything near the under 50 miles to the closest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it reached by the contamination. Say that on the phone, as it affects what goes in the van.

## Where is Raleigh Estate?

Raleigh Estate is a suburban area located on the coast of Devon, with an elevation of approximately 40 metres above sea level. Raleigh Estate sits near the towns of Bideford and Silford, and is about 36 miles from the city of Exeter. Raleigh Estate is characterised by its predominantly detached housing stock, reflecting the area's residential nature. Raleigh Estate is also relatively distant from London, at around 180 miles away.

## Once our engineers get to you in Raleigh Estate: what happens

- We ask first, quote after. What went in? How much? Has the motor run? Those answers alter what the work actually is.

- Your tank is cleared completely.

- Fuel lines are purged through and the fuel filter cleared, leaving nothing in the system that created any of this.

- Your system gets primed, on new diesel.

- It is run with fresh diesel in it, and our technicians check that it's running smoothly.

Then it is ready to drive away.

There's no need for a garage at any point, as the work is all done where your car is, and when it's caught early, long-term damage is very unusual.

Our technicians purge the lines instead of only emptying the tank, and the reason is that diluted fuel has already arrived at the fuel filter and the pump: it was a start and a drive, however short. The distance truly assists — pulled off the forecourt, receipt read, a diesel Mercedes A-Class parked up near Kenwith Valley nature reserve a few hundred yards later is about as well as this goes once the engine has turned. Phone us and leave it off.

## Raleigh Estate AdBlue removal is a different problem

The problem isn't the same, though the first instruction is — never fire it up — if what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol.

Petrol dilutes your diesel and strips the lubrication the system relies on.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus deposits.

Usually the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the detail sits on its own Raleigh Estate page. Both are ours to deal with.

Switch off where you have stopped, and don't start it to find somewhere better — close to Elizabeth Burton Theatre or anywhere at all. Rattling, an uneven idle, white smoke and a soft throttle are a wrongly fuelled diesel BMW X1 telling you what's wrong.

## Raleigh Estate prices for a petrol-in-diesel drain

Our technicians can't put one number on this page truthfully, since the job isn't one job. What changes it:

- This is the big one: whether the engine has been started, or driven.

- How much of the wrong fuel went in, weighed against how much that tank can hold.

- AdBlue or petrol, whichever went in.

- Access: the vehicle's position, and whether working on it there's sensible for a van.

A firm answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: your car, the amount, and if it has run.

If it's not time-critical — the car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Drain it then put clean diesel in — that's the advice you will get, generally from somebody certain, and it is only half right. Do exactly that to a diesel Skoda Superb close to Gymnasium and it would start, which is what makes the suggestion sound reasonable. What occurs next is the trouble: the engine straight away pulls the petrol still waiting in the filter and the feed lines straight back through the pump, since emptying a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Call us instead. Our technicians flush the circuit and take the filter off where the car has a serviceable one, which is the difference between the car being fixed and your car just starting.

## Raleigh Estate drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

## At a petrol station in Raleigh Estate, can you do a fuel drain there?

A good share of this work takes place there, so yes.

Our technicians attend Texaco and the other forecourts locally routinely, with the site's consent — tell us which one you are at when you call and we will tell you if our engineers can work there.

## Is there a sensible quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Ratio settles it rather than litres — and more than either, whether your motor has run.

Five litres in an almost empty tank is a different matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is needed is whether that mix has been drawn through your fuel system.

## Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What now?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then switch off and keep it off.

It is recoverable much more regularly than people fear, even though driving is what takes the trouble from that tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

No. Carried out properly, draining and flushing is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it.

Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one, which is another good reason to leave the vehicle switched off.

## Two-stroke oil in the tank, and then home?

No. It belongs to a distinct fault from a different era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind puts back.

Later? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Wherever the car is, our technicians drain and flush it there, so a drive to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

## You, and the vehicle, still together?

Leave the car shut off.

Already driven it? Then pull in somewhere safe, turn off, then let the car stay that way.

Cold and stationary, a car is in the best position available — and people fear this much more than the recovery rate warrants.

At the kerbside, on the forecourt or at home — call-out fuel draining around Raleigh Estate and throughout Devon.
