# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Redlands?

Don't fire up the motor. While the fuel is still sitting in your tank and the motor has not turned over, a tank drain is almost always all it needs — and that is settled in the next few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled vehicles where they stand, across Redlands and the rest of Dorset, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway.

Phone before all else happens, so you will learn what comes next.

## Your first five minutes: petrol in a diesel

- Give a petrol engine diesel and it will generally not run at all, and so the person stops there and so does the harm. Give a diesel petrol and the car starts, it ticks over, it drives off — fine for a couple of miles. People have that backwards, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So don't start the vehicle. And once started, do not rely on it: that fuel system is wearing as you drive.

- Leave your ignition be also. Diesel has two roles: it ignites, and before it ignites it greases your high-pressure pump and its injectors. Petrol handles the first and not the second. Switching the car's ignition on is usually sufficient to prime your system, which pulls the petrol out of the tank and into exactly those parts.

- Never dilute it. Diesel poured on top clears nothing, so all you get is more of what was already there, since percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system copes with petrol. Super unleaded? Simply petrol. The type makes no difference.

- A vehicle that has not shifted is the simplest one to sort, and so wait where you are if you sensibly can. Parked on the verge on Nottington Lane? Hazards on, then keep the car there. A difficult location suits us better than a started motor.

- Find out where you are before phoning. A postcode beginning DT3 5, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise the technician circles instead of arriving.

- What got in, roughly how much, and if the motor has run — those three details determine your whole visit. Phone 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

Don't drive it home. The journey in has already put a real quantity of petrol-thinned diesel through the high-pressure pump of that Volkswagen Golf, and the trip back would roughly double it for no purpose at all. Ring us from the platform if that's quicker. Our engineers don't need you hovering over the vehicle outside Upwey while our engineers get it done, and we would much rather hear from you tonight than discover on Monday.

## Pump-side draining for petrol in a diesel

Plenty of this work starts at a forecourt, so a big part of it is finished there.

Our technicians work on garage forecourts regularly, with the site's agreement, and so if you're still at BP that is normally where the drain takes place.

At the forecourt, this is stopped with your engine never fired, and nowhere else does it.

We can still deal with it where it sits, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, your car has been fired up and moved there, and that drew fuel through your filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump, right from the tank. None of that is a catastrophe, but the flush then has to reach past that tank to the lines and the filter, and the few seconds between seeing the till receipt and going for your key are what determine that.

The attendants will normally offer to push it clear of the petrol pump so the next customer can get past. It is worth doing.

Cranking it for four car lengths? No.

The tricky part is that bay, not the fuel. Cars either side of you, a trolley shelter behind, and occasionally a height bar on the way in that settles if a van can get to you at all — so when you phone from a car park like the one at Morrisons, say how much space there is about you and which way round the car is. Those our engineers attend often. Should there be no space to work alongside your diesel Skoda Octavia, it gets moved with the motor off, and not out of pedantry over a handful of seconds of running: priming occurs at every start, more of that blend departs that tank for the pump, and two shunts into a nicer space have gradually made a bigger job of what was just a motor standing still.

## Will we cover your part of Redlands?

Nottington, Broadwey, Littlemoor, Coldharbour, Radipole — every one of those on our trips that take us over to Redlands as well, a residential suburb.

Not on that list? That tells you nothing. The places above are just the nearest few, and nearly all places across Dorset have a page of their own elsewhere on this site.

On the boundary, or anywhere your satnav misreads? Ring us and ask rather than presuming.

Use our map for the ground shown here.

Roadside, forecourt, driveway, car park: every bit of it is ground our technicians cover, and none of that needs the car to move to us.

Somebody will tell you to move the vehicle out of that gateway and fix it later. Don't. A wrongly fuelled diesel BMW 3 Series on the zig-zags by St Nicholas and St Laurence Church of England Primary School is an inconvenience; the same motor restarted three more times to be courteous is a fuel system rather than a tank. Each restart primes the fuel lines and pulls more petrol past your filter and into your pump. Leave it there, let everyone moan, then ring us.

## Broken down on the kerbside around Redlands

Not everybody has a sensible place to stop.

If you worked it out after setting off and landed by the verge on Broadlands Road, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazards on, that is a normal call for us and not an odd one.

Safe right there? Remain with it. Not okay? Climb out and clear of it.

It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that is the catch: fire it up to get to somewhere safer and the mixture goes further into the system with every mile covered.

We will bring the van to a tricky location without any fuss, and for the car that's far better than driving on.

## So you've run it? Petrol in a diesel after some miles

under 50 miles from Redlands, the local M5 is what counts now.

A misfilled diesel will usually take you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong, and the symptoms when they appear are usually lost power, an uneven idle and some smoke rather than a tidy stop.

The first safe junction is the one to take. Turn off there, then leave the restarting alone.

It changes what our technicians bring, and so say so when you phone: on a longer drive — anything near the under 50 miles to the closest city — assume the mixture has been through the filter, your pump and your injectors.

Injection pressure is the part being lost. Petrol thins diesel, and weaker fuel slips past the precision components that are supposed to build that pressure, and so the farther a diesel Dacia Duster went, the less well it held. Fine on the way out and sluggish on the way back is how the trip to Two Mile Coppice went, then, and the tank is the place to look. Stop somewhere sensible, turn off then call us.

## All about Redlands

Redlands is a coastal suburban area in Dorset, situated near the towns of Nottington, Broadwey, and Littlemoor. Redlands has a population of around 1904 people and is characterised by predominantly detached housing. Redlands is located at a low elevation of 19 metres above sea level, and is approximately 118 miles from London. Redlands sits within the wider South West region, near the city of Wells, which is about 40 miles away.

## Once our engineers get to you around Redlands: what follows

- We find out what went in, how much, and whether your engine has run. The replies change the work, which is why we ask before giving a price.

- We clear your tank of all the polluted fuel.

- Lines purged, filter cleared. Whatever remains after that is not the thing that caused the issue.

- Our technicians put fresh diesel in and bleed the system.

- It's started with clean diesel in it, and our engineers check that it is running smoothly.

From there, you are ready to pull away.

There is no need for a workshop at any stage, because the work is all done where the vehicle is, and when it's spotted soon, long-term damage is very unusual.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Redlands is a distinct matter

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the opening step is unchanged — your motor stays off — whereas the issue underneath it is a different one altogether.

Diluted diesel, and no lubrication left for the system that depends on it. That's petrol.

AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it brings rust and deposits instead.

Both are ours. There's a separate Redlands page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

Most of these occur somewhere unfamiliar, and the cause is mechanical instead of slapdash — almost no resistance meets a smaller petrol nozzle entering a newer diesel filler neck. Two days into a diesel Mercedes A-Class, a fill-up near Broadwey Methodist Church that you didn't think about? Call us from where you are. Courtesy and hire cars go further before anybody notices it, and the further they go, the more petrol ends up at your injectors.

## What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost in Redlands

What shifts the figure is listed below, since this job is not one job and our technicians can't honestly put a single figure on this page.

- This is the big one: whether the motor has been run, or driven.

- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, compared with how much that tank takes.

- Whether it was petrol or AdBlue.

- Access: the car's position, and if working on it there's sensible for a technician.

Tell us what your vehicle is, how much went in, and if the engine has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range.

Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is good for that.

## Petrol in diesel: common queries in Redlands

## Fuel drains on a Redlands petrol station forecourt

Yes — forecourts are where a good part of this happens.

Agreement from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Sainsbury's is somewhere we are regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you'll hear whether working there is possible.

## Is there a safe quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Proportion settles it instead of litres — and more than either, whether your motor has run.

Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is required is if that mix has been drawn through the fuel system.

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Somewhere safe, then stop, then switch off and keep it off.

It's fixable far more commonly than drivers assume, even though driving is what shifts the problem from that tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

It isn't a modification, so a drain and flush carried out properly does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty.

Another reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

What petrol has weakened isn't replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a distinct issue. So no.

Petrol stays in that tank after that, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no respite from it.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

No. Our engineers drain and clean your car wherever it is, so there's no need to bring it to a franchised dealer.

## You, and your vehicle, still together?

The motor remains off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, switch off, and no restarting the car later.

Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that is the best place to be in. Motorists fear this far more than they need to.

At the kerbside, on the forecourt or at home — call-out fuel draining around Redlands and across Dorset.
