# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Renton? Don't Start It

Never fire up the engine. While the fuel is still sitting in that tank and the engine has not yet been started, a fuel drain is almost always all it requires — and that gets determined in the next few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled vehicles where they sit, all over Renton and the remainder of West Dunbartonshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway.

Our engineers can explain what your next move is. Ring us — this comes before anything else.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to do first

- Never crank it — and don't depend on it when it does start. This is the part people get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol engine filled with diesel generally just will not run, and so the person stops and the wear halts with them. A diesel filled with petrol usually starts, ticks over and moves off without complaint for several miles. It is not okay. It's wearing out the fuel system as you drive.

- Diesel combusts, and before it combusts it greases — that high-pressure pump, those injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave the ignition be too: turning it on is frequently sufficient to prime that system, and priming pulls petrol from the tank into precisely those components.

- Topping up gets rid of nothing. It leaves you a fuller tank of the same mix, since a diesel fuel system won't tolerate petrol by percentage in the way that advice assumes — so never tip diesel on top to weaken it. Octane is beside the point too: super unleaded is petrol.

- Remain where you are if you reasonably can. A vehicle that has never moved is the simplest one to sort, and our team would much rather drive to a tricky place than have it started. If you are pulled up on the verge on Stirling Street, turn the hazards on and keep the car there.

- Our van showing up rather than circling turns on two things: a postcode starting G82 4, and whatever is closest to you with a label on it. Keep both prepared before you ring.

- Phone 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three questions — what went in, approximately how much, and if the engine has been run. The replies determine all that follows.

Petrol in a diesel Volkswagen Golf, sat outside the nearest station since breakfast? The afternoon has cost you nothing — fuel sitting in a tank is idle. It was the run in that drew diluted diesel through the pump. Ring us before you fetch it.

## Forecourt draining for petrol in a diesel

It starts at a pump, typically. Regularly it ends there too.

Our technicians work on station forecourts all the time, with the station's agreement, so if you are still at John H Glen & Son that is usually where this drain happens.

At a garage, it gets stopped with the motor never run, and no place else does it.

Our technicians can still put it right where it is, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, the car has been started and driven there, and that drew fuel through your filter then into the high-pressure pump, right from the tank. None of that is a calamity, but the flush then has to reach past your tank to the fuel lines and the filter, and the few seconds between seeing the till receipt and reaching for the keys are what decide that.

Roll the car out of the way if the staff suggest it, and they usually will. The next driver gets through the petrol pump, and that is worth doing.

Moving it four spaces does not justify firing the engine.

## Renton plus the towns beside it

As a coastal village, Renton gets a regular visit, while the places close by go along on that same run: Redburn and Ohare, Bonhill and Alexandria, Pappert.

Not on the list? It says nothing. The names above are simply the closest few, and most locations around West Dunbartonshire have a page of their own elsewhere on this site.

Call us and check rather than presuming — boundaries above all, and anywhere your satnav may struggle with.

The patch this page spans is on this map.

The car doesn't need to come to us. We work across every bit of that — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

## Stuck at the kerbside in Renton

Some people have no safe spot to pull in whatsoever.

Set off, then noticed? Finished up along the verge of Red Row, or parked in some lay-by with the hazards flashing? That's a routine call here. Not a rare one.

Clear of the motor while it is not sensible to sit there, with it when it is.

Do not fire up your motor to nurse it somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing the blend further into your fuel system.

Pressing on causes the car far more harm than our van driving out to an awkward location, and that is no trouble for us.

Your Peugeot 308 stays where it is in the car park by the pub in the village for the whole job, which generally runs like this. First we ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether your engine has run since, given that much of the work depends on those answers. Your tank is emptied of the tainted blend, your lines are flushed, and the filter comes off if it's a replaceable one. With clean diesel in and your system bled, the car is started and tested, and once it is running correctly you pull away.

## A few miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

under 5 miles out of Renton, the local M8 is what counts now.

Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will often do both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is rarely a tidy stop. Power drains away, your idle goes uneven, and there may be some smoke.

Don't start it to reposition. Pull off at the first sensible exit then switch off.

Long run? Anything close to the under 25 miles to the nearest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it arrived at by the contamination. Say that on the phone, because it alters what goes in our van.

Your pump isn't turning, so whatever your diesel Mercedes C-Class did on the way to Millburn Gardens, none of it is going on now. Nothing is getting worse whilst it sits. Take your time over this — but never drive the vehicle home to buy any.

## A little about Renton

Renton is a small coastal village in West Dunbartonshire, situated near the shores of the Clyde Estuary at an elevation of around 12 metres. Renton lies within commuting distance of Glasgow, which is approximately 15 miles away, and is close to nearby places such as Redburn and Bonhill. Renton has a population of around 1560 people, predominantly living in flat-type housing.

## When our technicians get to you in Renton: what follows

- We ask first, quote after. What got in? How much? Has the engine run? Those responses alter what the work actually is.

- The tainted fuel is drawn out of that tank.

- Fuel lines are rinsed through and the filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the fuel system that created any of this.

- Our engineers put new diesel in and bleed the system.

- Our engineers turn it on and make sure it runs correctly on new diesel.

From there, you're ready to set off.

There is no need for a workshop at any point, as the work is all done where the vehicle is, and when it is noticed early, lasting damage is very unusual.

Leave the Vauxhall Astra near Renton Water Works Memorial Fountain then call us. We are firm about not driving on as a worn pump sheds, and what it loses travels downstream with your fuel to the injectors beyond it.

## Renton AdBlue removal is a separate job

The problem is not the same, though the first instruction is — do not start it — if what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol.

Petrol weakens the diesel and removes the lubrication your fuel system depends on.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it brings rust and build-up in its place.

Often the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the full story sits on its own Renton page. Both are ours to handle.

## Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel drain in Renton

One number wouldn't be fair here, because this isn't one job. These are the things that shift it:

- This is the key one: whether the motor has been started, or driven.

- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, measured against how much your tank takes.

- Whether it is petrol or AdBlue.

- Whether our van can sensibly get to your vehicle and work on it, which rests on where your car is.

A straight answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: your vehicle, the quantity, and whether it has run.

Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is ideal for that.

No warning light exists for this, which is why motors in that position generally get driven once more before anyone rings. Do not be one of them. The throttle went limp and the idle turned uneven after a couple of streets, and the diesel Citroen C3 is now resting near Renton War Memorial. Deadness there means fuel that can't build pressure fully instead of an engine packing up. Turn off. Ring us.

## Petrol in diesel: everyday questions in Renton

## Fuel drains on a Renton petrol station forecourt

Much of what we do gets done nowhere else. So yes.

Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Esso is somewhere we're regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you will hear if working there is possible.

## How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

It rests on the ratio rather than the litres, and far more on whether the engine has run.

An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct situations, certainly. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is if the system has had that blend sucked through it.

## I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then turn off and leave it off.

It's salvageable a lot more commonly than people assume, even though driving is what shifts the issue from the tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart it.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A drain and flush carried out properly isn't a modification and does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty.

A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

## Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a distinct fault and it doesn't replace what petrol has weakened.

That tank still has petrol in it later, and your pump still has to cope with it.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

There's no need to take it to a main dealer, because we drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is.

## Still with your car?

The motor stays off.

If you have already driven it, pull over somewhere sensible, switch it off then keep it off.

This is recoverable from a lot more frequently than motorists assume, and a still, cold vehicle is the best position to be in.

Call-out fuel draining around Renton and throughout West Dunbartonshire — at the kerbside, on the forecourt or at home.
