# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Rhiw? Don't Start It

If you have not turned on the motor as yet, don't. A fuel drain and nothing else is almost always what a car requires while the fuel is still sitting in that tank and the motor has not been started, which is why it's the next few minutes that count, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel travels to the car wherever it has come to rest in Rhiw or the rest of Caerphilly, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, and drains and cleans it there.

Just one ring our way is plenty: our team shall show you what follows from here. Make this right away.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to do first

- Give a petrol engine diesel and it will normally refuse to run at all, and so the motorist stops there and so does the damage. Give a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it ticks over, it drives off — all right for a couple of miles. Most people have that backwards, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So do not fire it up. And having started, never rely on it: that fuel system is wearing down while you drive.

- Two things, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps your high-pressure fuel pump and injectors protected. Petrol only does the one. Which is why the car's ignition remains off too — switch it on and you often prime your system, and that's petrol exiting the tank for just those parts.

- Don't add diesel on top to thin it. A diesel fuel system does not cope with petrol by percentage as that advice assumes, and topping up removes nothing — it merely hands you a fuller tank of the same mix. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.

- Remain where you are if you sensibly can. A vehicle that has never shifted is the simplest one to sort out, and we'd sooner come to an awkward spot than have it started. If you're stopped on the verge on Rhiw Farm Crescent, put the hazards on then keep the car there.

- The van turning up instead of circling rests on two things: a postcode beginning NP11 3, and whatever is nearest to you with a name on it. Get both prepared before you call.

- What was put in, roughly how many litres, plus whether the engine has started — the three facts shape your whole visit. Ring 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

## At a forecourt: clearing petrol from the diesel

A large share of this work gets completed at the pump, because that is where it mostly kicks off.

If you are still at the forecourt at Texaco, that's typically where the drain happens — our technicians work on petrol station forecourts routinely, with the owner's permission.

A filling station is the single place the mistake can be spotted before the motor has run.

Fuel drawn out of that tank and through the fuel filter, right to your high-pressure pump, is what occurs when the motor is started and the car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes your filter and your lines along with your tank. That's still not a catastrophe, and we put it right where your car stands. What determines it is whether the key was reached for in the seconds after the till receipt was checked.

Attendants will generally chip in pushing it away from the petrol pump, which lets the next customer get through. Welcome the help.

Cranking the car just for four car lengths? Not a chance.

Each start primes the fuel system and pulls more of the mix out of your tank and towards your pump — which is why a vehicle shuffled twice into a better bay has gradually grown into a harder job than one left precisely where it stopped. So where our technicians cannot work next to the diesel Renault Clio, our technicians roll it without running it. None of that is pedantry about a handful of seconds of running. Car parks like the one at Sainsbury's our engineers visit all the time, and the fuel is seldom the awkward part: that bay is. Motors either side, a trolley shelter behind, sometimes a height limit at the entrance determining whether a van can reach you at all. Tell us how penned in you are, and which way your car points.

## Rhiw and the areas next to it

Millbrook, Treowen, Crumlin, Kendon, Swffryd — each of these on the rounds that take us over to Rhiw itself, a residential suburb.

We do come. Those names above are merely the closest neighbours, and a page is there for the majority of places in Caerphilly, so an absence from the list is not an absence from our coverage.

Call us to ask rather than guessing, especially where you're on the boundary or somewhere your phone can't find.

That map shows the patch the page spans.

The lot is ground we work: a roadside, a forecourt, a driveway, a car park. You never bring the car anywhere.

Shift it out of the gateway and sort it out later — that's what someone will say, and it's wrong. Parked on the zig-zags by the local primary school, a wrongly fuelled diesel Nissan Qashqai is a nuisance and nothing worse. Started three more times for politeness, it's no longer a tank fault but a fuel system one, as priming occurs with every start and more petrol goes through your filter towards the pump. Let them complain. Ring us.

## Stranded at the roadside somewhere in Rhiw?

Some people find no suitable spot to stop at all.

Hazards flashing at a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge beside Kendon Road as you realised after setting off — our engineers take that call often enough that it's the usual kind.

Sit with the vehicle when it's wise to wait in it, and out of the car if it is not.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls that mixture further into your fuel system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why your motor does not get restarted to limp somewhere safer.

We'll send our van to a difficult place without any trouble, and for the vehicle that is far better than carrying on.

## Already driven it? Petrol in a diesel over a few miles

Your M4 is the road which matters here, and sits under 10 miles from Rhiw.

Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will usually do both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is rarely a clean stop. Power falls away, your idle gets rough, and there may be smoke.

Take the first junction that's safe, stop there, and don't restart the vehicle to reposition.

On a longer drive — anything near the under 10 miles to the closest city — take it the contamination has been through the filter, your pump and your injectors, and say so when you call. It affects what our engineers bring.

Your pump is not turning, and so whatever your diesel Dacia Duster did on the way to Craig Swffryd, none of it is going on now. Nothing is getting worse while it waits. Take your time over this — but never drive the car home to buy any.

## Rhiw itself

Rhiw is a suburban area in Caerphilly, situated on the riverside at an elevation of 196 metres. Rhiw lies near the communities of Millbrook, Treowen, and Crumlin, and is approximately 9 miles from Newport. Rhiw has a population of around 1380 people, predominantly living in terraced housing. Rhiw is located in a region of south Wales, within commuting distance of major cities.

## What comes next when our technicians arrive with you in Rhiw

- The answers change the work, which is why we ask before pricing: what got in, how much of that, and whether the engine has run.

- We empty the tank of the contaminated fuel.

- Fuel lines are rinsed through and the fuel filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the system that caused any of this.

- Bleeding the system follows, once fresh diesel is in.

- Our engineers start the car and make sure it runs properly on fresh diesel.

That has it ready to set off.

Everything is done where the car is, so it never has to go to a garage, and when it has been noticed quickly, permanent damage is very rare.

## A distinct problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Rhiw

Don't crank it: that first instruction applies whether what got in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is this problem itself.

Petrol dilutes your diesel and strips the lubrication your fuel system depends on.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus residue.

Both are ours. There's a separate Rhiw page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

The smaller petrol nozzle fits a modern diesel filler neck with practically no resistance at all, which makes this mechanical not sloppy. Strange spots see most of it for that reason. So: fuelled up by Victory Church Swffryd without thinking, in a diesel BMW 1 Series you have had for two days? Phone us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars tend to get driven further before anybody notices, and distance decides how much petrol gets to the injectors.

## Rhiw pricing for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

What changes the figure is set out below, because the job is not one job and our engineers can't honestly put a single number on this page.

- Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.

- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, judged against how much your tank can hold.

- Which went in: petrol or AdBlue.

- Access: the vehicle's position, and if working on it there is safe for our van.

Tell us what the vehicle is, how much went in, and if the motor has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range.

If it isn't time-critical — the car is at home and going nowhere — works too.

The filter, the fuel lines, the pump and its rail: that is where that mix is once a diesel has run, and it doesn't come back out with your tank contents. So the tank is not where most of the trouble sits by this point, and a diesel Ford Kuga that made it close to Horeb Chapel needs your system flushed rather than cleared.

## Petrol in diesel questions from Rhiw drivers

## Fuel drains on a Rhiw petrol station forecourt

Much of what we do gets done nowhere else. So yes.

Often, provided the site consents: another forecourt nearby, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether we can work in that place is something our engineers answer on the spot.

## How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Whether your motor has run counts much more, though the proportion matters too, rather than the litres.

Five litres into an almost dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that blend been sucked right through, or has it not?

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the vehicle

Pull in somewhere sensible, turn off, then leave the vehicle off.

Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does move the trouble out of the tank and into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays recoverable a lot more often than people expect.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

It isn't an alteration, and so a drain then flush carried out properly does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty.

What is likelier to start a dispute is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the motor to stay off.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

What petrol has weakened is not replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a separate issue. So no.

Later on? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to put up with the stuff.

## Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

No. We drain and flush your car wherever it is, so there is no need to bring it to a main dealer.

## You, and your car, still together?

Do not turn your engine on again.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, switch off, and no restarting the car afterwards.

Cold and still, a car is in the best position available — and motorists fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.

Across Caerphilly and around Rhiw: call-out fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the roadside.
