# Rhos-goch: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

If you have not turned on the motor yet, don't. A drain and nothing more is nearly always what a car needs while the fuel is still in the tank and your engine has not turned over, which is why it is the next few minutes that matter, not how much got in. Petrol in Diesel comes to the vehicle wherever it has ended up in Rhos-goch or the rest of Powys, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and cleans it there.

Our technicians can show you what the following stage is. Call us — that happens before everything else.

## The next five minutes: petrol in a diesel

- Give a petrol engine diesel and it will usually refuse to run at all, and so the person stops there and so does the damage. Feed a diesel petrol and the car starts, it idles, it moves off — all right for a couple of miles. Most people have that reversed, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So don't crank it. And having started, never depend on it: your fuel system is wearing down as you drive.

- Leave the ignition be too. Diesel has two roles: it burns, and before it combusts it lubricates the high-pressure pump and those injectors. Petrol does the first but not the second. Flicking the ignition on is often enough to prime the system, which pulls the petrol out of that tank and into precisely those parts.

- That advice presumes a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol by percentage. It doesn't. Put diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you get is a larger tank of the same blend. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.

- Our team would sooner travel to an awkward location than have it started — so if you reasonably can, stay still. Nothing is easier to sort than a motor that has not shifted. On the verge on Castlefield Close, that means hazards on and keep it.

- A van showing up instead of circling hinges on two things: a postcode that starts LD2 3, and whatever is next to you with a label on it. Have both ready before you phone.

- Three answers settle the entire call-out: the stuff you put in, the ballpark quantity of it, and if anything has been turning since. The number is 0333 366 0103.

## Clearing petrol from a diesel at a forecourt

Forecourts are where the job mostly kicks off, and where a large part of that finishes.

Still at Texaco? Then that is usually where it takes place. Petrol station forecourts are routine for us, with the permission of the owner.

At the forecourt, it gets caught with your engine never run, and no place else does that.

The few seconds between reading the till receipt and reaching for the key settle how much requires cleaning. Anywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the car was started and driven to get there, so fuel was pulled from the tank, through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure pump. That means your lines and the fuel filter require flushing as well as the tank. It's not a disaster, and our technicians can still put it right where the car is.

Away from the pump, the next motorist can get through — so yes, let the staff help you wheel it. Very much worth doing.

Four vehicle lengths isn't worth a start.

We are in car parks like the one outside Co-op Food a lot, and it's almost never the fuel that complicates them. It's the bay. Vehicles both sides. Trolleys stacked up behind. Occasionally a height limit at the entrance, which settles if a van can reach you at all. So tell us how penned in you are when you phone, and which way the car is facing. If there's no room to work beside that Peugeot 308, our technicians move it without your engine. That's not fussiness over a few seconds: starts prime things, fuel comes out of your tank on to the pump, and a vehicle shuffled twice for a better bay is gradually a harder job than one no one touched.

## Will we cover your end of Rhos-goch?

Being a village, Rhos-goch sees a frequent visit, whilst the areas round about go with it on the same trip: Bryngwyn and Dol-y-cannau, Painscastle and Crowthers Pool, Newchurch.

If yours is not on this list it does not mean we do not come — there are separate pages for the majority of locations in Powys, and the ones named above are simply the closest neighbours.

Contact us and enquire rather than presuming, especially where you're on a boundary or somewhere a satnav misreads.

The map shows the ground the page includes.

The car never needs to come to us. We operate over all of that — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Your diesel Nissan Qashqai will have seemed completely usual on the way back from the local primary school. They all do, and that is the catch with petrol in a diesel and not the other way round. Put diesel in a petrol motor and it mostly won't run, and so the motorist stops and the wear stops with them. Put petrol in a diesel and it fires up, ticks over and drives off as though nothing has happened — all the while the high-pressure fuel pump keeps working without the protection your fuel is supposed to be supplying. Nothing tells you, since from the driver's seat there is nothing to caution you about. Ring us with roughly how far you went and how hard you pushed it; the second one counts more than the first.

## Stranded by the kerbside around Rhos-goch

Some drivers have no sensible place to pull in whatsoever.

Set off, then twigged? Finished up by the verge beside Castle Meadow, or parked in some lay-by with your hazards going? That is a common call here. Not a rare one.

Whether you sit by the car or move clear of it hangs on whether being there seems wise.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol draws the mixture further into the system — and oblige it usually will, which is why the motor does not get restarted to limp somewhere better.

However awkward the spot, it is no trouble for us to get to it, and that's far better for your car than pressing on.

It will fire up. It will pull away quite happily. That's the problem, since a diesel on a thinned tank acts usually whilst grinding the components its fuel should be lubricating. So no, never chance the trip home from the pub in the village — leave the Mercedes E-Class and ring us.

## Petrol in a diesel, but the motor has gone

under 50 miles from Rhos-goch, your M50 is what counts now.

It will often take you onto it, and some way along, before you feel a thing. Then it is some smoke, an uneven idle and power falling away — not a neat stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Never restart it to move it. Get off at the first safe exit then switch off.

Presume the worst of that on a long run. Anything approaching the under 25 miles to the closest city, and the petrol has been through the filter, through your pump, through the injectors. Tell us when you call. What our engineers bring changes.

Your pump is not turning, and so whatever your diesel Audi A3 did on the way to Rhosgoch Golf & Leisure Club, none of it is going on now. Nothing is getting worse whilst it stands. Take your time over this — but do not drive the car home to buy any.

## A little about Rhos-goch

Rhos-goch is a small village in Powys, situated on the banks of a river at an elevation of 263 metres. Rhos-goch lies near the English border, approximately 20 miles from Hereford, and is surrounded by nearby villages such as Bryngwyn and Painscastle. Rhos-goch has a population of around 527 people, predominantly living in detached houses. Rhos-goch is located in a rural area, with the nearest major city being Hereford, and is about 137 miles from London.

## What we do when our technicians arrive with you in Rhos-goch

- Our technicians ask first, quote after. What was put in? How much? Has your motor run? Those responses shape what the work really is.

- Our technicians empty that tank of all the polluted fuel.

- Our technicians purge the lines and clean the fuel filter, so what is remaining in the fuel system isn't what caused the problem.

- Your system gets primed, on fresh diesel.

- Your engine is turned on and checked to confirm it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

That has it ready to pull away.

Everything is done where your car is, so it never needs to go to a garage, and when it has been noticed soon, permanent damage is very rare.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Rhos-goch is a different job

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening rule is unchanged — your motor stays off — whereas this fault underneath it is a separate one altogether.

Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and removes the protection the fuel system depends on.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus residue.

Both are ours. There's a separate Rhos-goch page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

A throttle gone soft, white smoke, an uneven idle, clattering: that's a misfilled diesel BMW X1 telling you what is wrong. Do not start the vehicle to find a better spot — turn off where you have stopped, near Church of St. Michael or anywhere else.

## Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel drain in Rhos-goch

Our engineers cannot put one price on this page truthfully, because the job is not one job. What changes it:

- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.

- The type of fluid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.

- Whether our van can safely get to the vehicle and work on it, which hinges on where the car is.

The car, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight rather than as a range.

Car at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is fine for that.

## Petrol in diesel queries from Rhos-goch motorists

## Fuel drains on a Rhos-goch petrol station forecourt

Plenty of what our engineers do takes place nowhere else. So yes.

Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like another forecourt nearby is somewhere we're frequently, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you'll hear if working there is possible.

## Is there a safe quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Litres are not the yardstick. Ratio is, and a lot more than either, it counts whether anything has been run.

What decides how much work is required is whether that blend has been pulled through the fuel system — since although five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different situation from five in a full one, either way that's the question.

## Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? Now what?

Stop somewhere sensible, turn off, and keep the vehicle off.

Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does move the trouble out of your tank then into your pump and injectors, yes, and it stays fixable a lot more frequently than people fear.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

It's not a change, so a drain and flush carried out properly doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty.

Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one, which is another good reason to leave it switched off.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a separate problem and it doesn't put back what petrol has weakened.

Petrol stays in that tank later on, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no respite from it.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

There is no need to take it to a franchised dealer, because our engineers drain and flush the vehicle wherever it is.

## Waiting next to it?

Turned off is the way the car stays.

If you have already driven the car, stop somewhere sensible, switch it off then keep it off.

Cold, parked, going nowhere: that is the best place to be in. People fear this much more than they need to.

At the roadside, on the forecourt or at home — on-site fuel draining around Rhos-goch and across Powys.
