# Petrol in a Diesel Car in Ridgeway: How Worried Should You Be?

Not started? Then less worried than you probably are.

Petrol sitting in a diesel tank does nothing to the motor till something draws it through your fuel system — the ignition priming your pump, the starter, or driving itself. So the honest answer to the first query anyone around Ridgeway asks, "have I ruined it?", is usually no.

Leave your motor off and ring Petrol in Diesel — that is how you keep it that way.

What petrol really does to a diesel, how to gauge how far it has travelled, and how to stop it from happening a second time: that is the rest of this page.

## The motor and petrol in a diesel: what happens

Passing through an engine, diesel is doing two jobs at once.

Lubricating comes before burning; it does both.

Your high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors are built to very fine tolerances, and the diesel passing through them is what stops those surfaces from wearing down against each other.

Of those two tasks, petrol handles the first poorly and the second never.

Being less viscous than diesel, petrol strips away the lubrication a fuel system needs, so a pump on that mixture to wear itself. It's equally made to resist igniting under compression — the opposite of what a diesel needs — which is where you get the rattling.

Put these together and the shape of the problem is plain.

It is movement that does the damage, not contact.

Where the petrol is only in your tank, it is a fault of fuel, nothing more.

Whatever a worn pump sheds travels on, carried by your fuel, into the fuel injectors further along, which is why a pump that has been working on that petrol is where a mechanical issue starts.

## Ridgeway, petrol in a diesel: four situations, from mild to significant

The best case there is: filled up, not once started.

At a forecourt, and genuinely only there, that petrol is still limited to your tank — because everywhere else your car was driven to get to it. The job is emptying and flushing on the spot.

The ignition switched on, or a brief start.

Once primed, your system has drawn petrol out of the tank up to your filter and your lines.

Normally nothing more than clearing, cleaning and seeing to your filter, and so still easy.

Some miles driven, and your pump has spent every one of them running on weakened fuel.

Tank, lines, filter, then clean fuel put through the entire system: that's this work, and the way the vehicle was driven counts as much as the miles.

Short trips, such as the school run to the local primary school, are one thing.

Getting as far as Newport, under 3 miles away, makes a very different task — as does any miles on the M4, under a mile from Ridgeway, with the motor running hard all the way.

Driven until it protested. Knocking, a ragged idle, smoke, a throttle that has gone soft.

That's the engine telling you its fuel no longer is behaving like diesel.

Stop on the spot — on the verge on Allt-Yr-Yn View, at the kerb, down a side road — and don't move it again.

A car pulled over soon very rarely has permanent damage, as the drain and the flush-through, which still go first, deal with it.

## What Ridgeway motorists get told about petrol in a diesel — and the stories in it

It will not be fine. The myth: "Fill it the rest of the way with diesel and it will be."

Nothing comes out when you top up — the tank simply holds more of the same mixture.

Percentage is not how a diesel fuel system copes with petrol, however much that advice assumes.

Myth: "A newer diesel can cope with a bit of petrol." If anything, the opposite.

A current diesel runs its fuel through finer components at higher pressure, which makes the protection count more, not less.

This is the one that fools drivers. Myth: "If it starts and drives, there's no harm done."

Diesel in a petrol motor normally means a motor that won't run: the driver stops, and so does the damage.

A diesel fed petrol normally starts, ticks over and drives away as if nothing has happened, whilst your pump wears.

Running isn't the same as fine.

Myth: a two-stroke additive makes it safe to drive home. It was an old fix, meant for another problem.

It doesn't put back what petrol has thinned, and that petrol is still in that tank afterwards.

If your engine has run, part of the petrol sits in your filter and your lines, not that tank — and the next start sends it straight back through your pump. So the myth "drain the tank yourself and you're sorted" does not stand up.

Besides, petrol cleared into a can by the road is truly hazardous.

## Why petrol in a diesel happens at all

A careless moment is rarely the cause, and no one means to do it.

One way only, since of the nozzles: the smaller petrol one slips inside a diesel filler with almost no resistance, while the diesel one mostly will not fit a petrol car. That is how the forecourt makes it easy.

It takes place when habit and the car stop matching.

Courtesy car, hire car, or a car that's brand new.

One petrol and one diesel on the driveway of the same household.

A forecourt you know, but with its pumps arranged differently.

Filling up in a hurry on the way to Newport (South Wales), with a train to catch.

The first fill-up in a diesel Volkswagen Tiguan after years of driving petrol is precisely the moment it happens.

Throw in rain, a phone call or a back seat full of children, and your hand does what it has always done.

## Preventing petrol in a diesel next time you fill up around Ridgeway

- Green for unleaded and black for diesel is usual in the UK — but not on each forecourt. Go by the label on the petrol pump, not the colour.

- In a car you don't know, look inside the flap over your filler or at the cap before your first fill: many vehicles state the fuel type there.

- A coloured fob or a sticker on your diesel's key does more than any amount of meaning to remember, in a home with one of each.

- Say it before you lift it. On your first fill in a new or hired car, say "diesel" out loud before you lift the nozzle off the pump. It seems silly and it works.

- Tuck the phone away. This is an easy mistake to make whilst you are thinking about something else.

- Add-on devices are available for motors without one, and some diesels are built with a filler that won't accept a petrol nozzle. Useful — but a safety net at best, never a reason to stop checking the label.

- Stop as soon as you notice. Less petrol in that tank makes a weaker mix. It does not change what to do next, which is still not to fire it up.

## Already put petrol in a diesel in Ridgeway?

The order of things is short, then.

Never start it, and do not turn your ignition on.

Ask the staff to help you push it clear of the petrol pump if you are still at the forecourt, whether that's Asda or anywhere else.

Next, 0333 366 0103. We will ask what was put in, about how much, and if it's been run.

Corrosion and deposits form the trouble with AdBlue, whereas petrol brings lost lubrication. So if it was AdBlue, say so — and read its own Ridgeway page.

## Ridgeway petrol in a diesel tasks: why one costs more than another

An honest single price does not exist here: four scenarios, four separate jobs.

Chiefly, the cost moves with which situation you are in.

Beyond that it is the ratio — how much petrol got in against how much that tank holds — and then where your car is and whether our van can get to it safely.

That's why our engineers ask three queries before pricing instead of after: what went in, how much, and if it has run.

Given the replies, you get a straight figure rather than a range.
