# How Worried Should You Be? Petrol in a Diesel Car in Ridgeway Parade

Probably less than you already are — provided nobody has started the vehicle.

Until your ignition primes the pump, your starter cranks, or the vehicle is driven, petrol in a diesel tank simply sits there and does nothing. Which makes the truthful reply to the first Ridgeway Parade question — "have I ruined it?" — usually no.

Petrol in Diesel is who to phone, with the motor kept off, so it stays that way.

The remainder of this page sets out what petrol actually does to a diesel, how to tell how far it has got, and how to make sure it does not happen to you a second time.

## The engine and petrol in a diesel: what goes on

Diesel does two jobs on its way through an engine.

Lubricating comes before burning; it does both.

Very fine tolerances go into the injectors and the high-pressure fuel pump, and only the diesel flowing through keeps those surfaces from grinding together.

Poorly at the first, not at all at the second: that's petrol.

The clattering comes from petrol being designed not to ignite when compressed, which is exactly the opposite of what a diesel needs. On top of that it is runnier than diesel, it strips out the protection your system rests on, and any pump running on that mixture is wearing itself.

The shape of the issue is plain once you put those together.

Contact does not do the damage — movement does.

Any tank with petrol in it is a fuel issue.

A pump that has been running on that petrol is the start of a mechanical one, and whatever a worn pump sheds moves on with your fuel to your injectors further on.

## How bad is petrol in a diesel? Four scenarios our technicians see around Ridgeway Parade

Fuelled, and never started: no case is better.

On a forecourt, and truly only there, the petrol is still limited to the tank — because anywhere else your car was driven to reach it. The task is emptying and rinsing on the spot.

The ignition switched on, or a brief start.

Once primed, your system has drawn petrol from your tank as far as your filter and the lines.

Drain, flush, see to the fuel filter: still usually simple.

Your pump now worked a couple of miles on diluted fuel — that's what driving it meant.

How hard your car was driven counts as much as how far, and this work covers that tank, the lines, your filter and fresh fuel through the entire circuit.

On the school run to Crookham Church of England Aided Infant School, the mileage is short.

Any mileage on the M3, under 3 miles from Ridgeway Parade, means the engine has worked hard throughout, and a run to Winchester, under 25 miles away, is a very different job too.

It protested, and only then stopped: smoke, rattling, a throttle gone soft, an idle gone lumpy.

What you are hearing is your engine reporting fuel that no longer behaves like diesel.

Pull up wherever you are — the verge on The Verne, a lay-by, a side street — then leave the car where it is.

The fuel drain and flush still go first, and they take care of it: if a car is stopped soon, long-term damage is very rare.

## Ridgeway Parade drivers and the petrol in a diesel stories they hear

It will not be fine. The myth: "Fill it the rest of the way with diesel and it'll be."

Topping up takes out nothing; it gives you a bigger tank of the same mix.

Percentage is not how a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol, however much that guidance supposes.

Myth: "A modern diesel can cope with a bit of petrol." If anything, the opposite.

At higher pressure, through smaller components: that is how a modern diesel moves its fuel, and so the lubrication matters more, not less.

"It starts, it drives, so no harm done" — the myth that trips up more drivers than any other.

A petrol engine fed diesel usually will not run, and so the motorist stops and the harm stops with them.

Nothing seems to have happened when a diesel fed petrol fires up, ticks over and drives away, as it usually does; meanwhile your pump grinds.

Being able to run isn't the same as being fine.

Myth: "Add some two-stroke oil and drive the vehicle home." It is an old workaround for a distinct fault.

That petrol is still inside that tank afterwards, and what it has thinned isn't put back.

Once your engine has been run, part of that petrol is in the fuel filter and your lines, not that tank — and the next start pulls it straight back through your pump. So the myth "drain your tank yourself and you are sorted" does not stand up.

It's also genuinely hazardous to drain petrol into a can at the kerbside.

## Why petrol in a diesel takes place so easily

Carelessness is rarely the cause, and nobody means to do it.

One way only, since of the nozzles: the slimmer petrol one slips inside a diesel filler with almost no resistance, whereas the diesel one mostly will not fit a petrol car. That's how the forecourt makes it easy.

Habit and your car falling out of step is how it takes place.

Hire cars, courtesy cars, and cars that are new to you.

Two vehicles on one driveway, one petrol, one diesel.

The pumps in a different order on a familiar forecourt.

Fuelling up in a hurry on the way to Fleet, with a train to catch.

Precisely the moment it occurs: after years of driving petrol, a driver fills a diesel Volkswagen Passat for the first time.

With rain, a call coming in, or children to deal with, your hand simply does what it always has.

## How to avoid petrol in a diesel at your next fill-up around Ridgeway Parade

- Not every forecourt in the UK follows green for unleaded and black for diesel, even if most usually do. Check the pump's label; the colour is just a hint.

- In a vehicle you do not know, look inside the flap over your filler or at the cap before the first fill: many vehicles print the fuel there.

- A coloured fob or a sticker on the diesel's key achieves more than any amount of intending to remember, in a house with one of each.

- Before the nozzle leaves the pump the first time you fill a hired or new car, say "diesel" out loud. Daft, yes, yet it does the trick.

- Mistakes like this are easy to make while your mind is on something else, and so your phone goes away.

- Some diesels come with a filler built to reject a petrol nozzle, and devices you can add are available for cars without one. Such an inhibitor helps up to a point — as a safety net, not a reason to stop checking the pump.

- Stop as soon as you realise. Less petrol in that tank makes a weaker mixture. It doesn't change what to do next, which is still not to crank it.

## Ridgeway Parade: already put petrol in a diesel?

Then, there's only a short order of things.

Don't switch your ignition on, and do not start it.

Yet on the forecourt, at Esso or anywhere else? Ask the staff to help you roll it clear of the petrol pump.

What got in, about how much, and whether it's run: tell us that when you ring 0333 366 0103.

AdBlue, not petrol? Then tell us. Corrosion and deposits, not lost lubrication, make it a different fault — Ridgeway Parade has a page all for it.

## What makes one Ridgeway Parade petrol in a diesel task cost more than the next

Four different tasks sit behind the four situations above — which is why there's no fair single price.

The scenario itself does most of the work of moving your cost.

Where the vehicle is counts too, and whether our van can safely reach it, after the proportion of petrol to what the tank takes.

That's why our technicians ask three queries before quoting rather than after: what went in, how much, and if it's run.

A range becomes a straight figure once the answers are in.
