# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Roade? Don't Start It

With the tank still carrying the petrol and the motor not yet started, almost every job needs only a drain, so leave the engine off. That outcome is determined in the minutes immediately after the fill-up, and not by the amount that got in. All over Roade and the remainder of Northamptonshire, Petrol in Diesel drains the car and flushes it where it sits, whether by a roadside, on a private drive or at a forecourt.

One call our way will be sufficient: we can show you what happens next. Try that first.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to do now

- Feed a petrol motor diesel and it will generally refuse to run at all, and so the person stops there and so does the harm. Give a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it idles, it pulls away — fine enough for a couple of miles. People have that muddled, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So never start the vehicle. And once started, do not depend on it: your fuel system is wearing down whenever you drive.

- Leave the ignition be as well. Diesel does two tasks: it burns, and before it ignites it lubricates your high-pressure fuel pump and those injectors. Petrol does the first but not the second. Flicking your ignition on is commonly sufficient to prime the system, which draws that petrol out of that tank then into exactly those components.

- Topping up takes out nothing. It gives you a bigger tank of the same mix, because a diesel fuel system doesn't tolerate petrol by percentage the way that guidance presumes — so never tip diesel on top to dilute it. Type is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.

- A car that hasn't moved is the easiest one to handle, so remain where you are if you reasonably can. Pulled up on the verge on Church End? Hazards on, and leave the vehicle there. An odd place works for us better than a started diesel.

- Our van showing up rather than circling rests on two things: a postcode beginning NN7 2, and whatever is closest to you with a label on it. Have both ready before you call.

- Dial 0333 366 0103. Anticipate three queries — what got in, about how many litres, and whether the engine has been started. Your responses decide whatever follows.

Nothing about the time since has lost you anything. Fuel in a tank is idle, so a diesel Skoda Octavia left at Northampton this morning is no worse at five than it was at nine — what pushed thinned diesel through the pump was the journey in. Phone before you head off to fetch the car.

## Can petrol be taken out of your diesel at a forecourt?

The job kicks off at a pump, usually. Frequently the job finishes there too.

If you are still on the forecourt at BP, that's normally where the drain gets done — our technicians work on garage forecourts regularly, with the owner's permission.

Before your motor has started — a garage is the single place the mistake gets spotted.

Fuel pulled out of the tank and through your filter, all the way to the high-pressure fuel pump, is what happens when the engine is switched on and the car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes the filter and the fuel lines as well as that tank. That's still not a calamity, and our engineers sort it out where the car sits. What determines it is whether the ignition was reached for in the seconds after the receipt was checked.

The staff will usually happily roll the vehicle clear of the pump so the next motorist can get through. That is worth doing.

Cranking the car to move four vehicle lengths isn't.

## Service around Roade

These same journeys get us to Courteenhall, Ashton, Stoke Bruerne, Quinton Green and Quinton as well as Roade, which is a rural village.

If yours isn't on the list that does not mean we don't come — there are pages for the majority of locations in Northamptonshire, and the ones listed above are simply the closest neighbours.

Contact us and check rather than guessing, particularly if you are on a border or somewhere your phone struggles with.

The patch the page covers appears on our map.

The car doesn't need to travel to us. We work across every bit of it — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

How far, and how hard? The second of those matters more than the first, and so have both prepared. Your Peugeot 308 will have seemed perfectly ordinary on the way back from Roade Primary School — they all do, and that is the catch. Diesel into a petrol car usually will not run at all: the motorist stops, and so does the damage. Petrol into a diesel starts, idles, moves off like nothing happened, while the high-pressure pump gets on with its work minus the lubrication the fuel should be giving it. No warning arrives, because behind the wheel nothing looks wrong.

## Roade: stuck wherever you pulled up

The opportunity to pull in somewhere sensible does not come to everyone.

If you worked it out after setting off and ended up by the verge of High Street, or at a lay-by somewhere with your hazards flashing, that is a normal call for us and not a rare one.

Fine right there? Stay with it. Not okay? Move out and clear of it.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol draws that mix further into the fuel system — and oblige it usually will, which is why your motor doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere safer.

Driving on does your car far more harm than a van coming out to a difficult place, and that's no bother for us.

A diesel Audi A4 in the parking area at The Cock Inn carrying a tank of petrol in it is an easy job, right up till somebody drives it home. Leave it overnight then call us in the morning. Nothing deteriorates as it sits. What we will ask about is if that run there was brief and cold, because that is where petrol is least likely to burn correctly — and what won't burn can slip past the piston rings then into the oil.

## Petrol in a diesel, and the motor has moved

This is where your M1 comes in, under 3 miles out of Roade.

A drop in power, a rough idle, smoke: those are the signs when they come, rather than a tidy stop — and a misfuelled diesel will often get you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong at all.

Don't start it to move it. Come off at the first sensible junction and turn off.

It affects what we bring, so tell us when you phone: on a longer run — anything near the under 15 miles to the nearest city — take it the mixture has been through the filter, your pump and the fuel injectors.

Your pump is not turning, so whatever the diesel Ford Focus did on the way to Monument Green, none of that is going on now. Nothing is getting worse while it stands. Take your time over this — but don't drive it home to buy any.

## All about Roade

Roade is a village in Northamptonshire, situated in the East Midlands region of England, with an elevation of around 110 metres above sea level. Roade lies approximately 55 miles northwest of London and 10 miles southeast of Milton Keynes, near the villages of Courteenhall, Ashton, and Stoke Bruerne. Roade has a population of around 2196 people, predominantly living in semi-detached housing. Roade is characterized by its inland setting, with a mix of residential and rural areas.

## What our engineers do when we arrive with you in Roade

- Our technicians ask first, price after. What got in? How much? Has your engine run? Those responses change what the work really is.

- The tank is drained of everything.

- What is left in your system should not be what caused the trouble, so the lines get flushed and the filter cleared.

- Bleeding the system follows, once fresh diesel is in.

- Our engineers turn it on and make sure it runs smoothly on new diesel.

From there, you are ready to pull away.

There's no need to go to a garage at any stage, because the work is all done where your car is, and when it's caught early, permanent damage is very uncommon.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Roade is a distinct job

Don't fire it up: that opening step stands whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is this issue itself.

Petrol dilutes your diesel and takes away the protection the fuel system relies on.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus residue.

Both are ours. There is a separate Roade page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

Most of these occur somewhere unfamiliar, and the cause is mechanical rather than careless — practically no resistance meets a slimmer petrol nozzle entering a newer diesel filler neck. Two days into a diesel Vauxhall Astra, a fill-up close to St Mary the Virgin that you did not think about? Phone us from where you are. Courtesy and hire cars go further before anybody spots it, and the further they go, the more petrol ends up at your injectors.

## Roade costs for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

We cannot put one figure on this page frankly, since the job isn't one job. What shifts it:

- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.

- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, against how much your tank takes.

- Which was put in: petrol or AdBlue.

- Whether our van can sensibly get to the car and work on it, which hinges on where the car is.

A clear answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: your vehicle, the quantity, and whether it has run.

Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is fine for that.

## Petrol in diesel: frequent queries around Roade

## At a petrol station in Roade, can you do a fuel drain there?

Yes — forecourts are where a fair share of this gets done.

We visit Shell and the other forecourts nearby regularly, with the owner's consent — tell us which one you're at when you call and we'll tell you whether we can work there.

## A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Whether your motor has run matters a lot more, though the ratio matters too, rather than the litres.

What settles how much work is needed is whether that mixture has been sucked through your fuel system — since though five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different situation from five in a full one, either way that is the question.

## I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Turn off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop.

It is salvageable a lot more frequently than people expect, even though driving is what takes the issue from your tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart it.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A drain then flush carried out properly is not a modification and does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty.

An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

What petrol has weakened is not restored by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a separate issue. So no.

Afterwards? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to put up with the stuff.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Not at all. Our engineers drain and flush the vehicle wherever it is, so there's no need to take it to a main dealer.

## Is your car still with you?

Never switch your engine on again.

If you have already driven the car, pull over somewhere safe, turn it off then leave it off.

Cold, parked, going nowhere: that's the best place to be in. Drivers fear this much more than they need to.

Across Northamptonshire and around Roade: mobile fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the kerbside.
