# Rode: Petrol in a Diesel Car? Here Is What Happens

Not for a second, and not to move it: your engine remains off. Pause there.

Drained and cleaned, right where it is: that's normally all an unrun diesel with petrol in it takes. Whether it remains that straightforward depends on the minutes to come far more than on everything else.

Anywhere you are around Rode, this is the order things go from here.

## Minute one: petrol in a diesel, motor off

First, these — in this sequence.

- The ignition off, keys out. Switched on, the ignition can prime your system — and priming is what moves petrol out of your tank towards the components it harms.

- No diesel on top. More fuel in takes away none of the petrol — it only makes you with extra of the same blend.

- Make the car simple to see before anything else — hazard lights on — if there is traffic going past anywhere near you.

- Off the pump by hand. On a forecourt, ask the staff to help you push the vehicle away from the pump. Don't start the vehicle to shift it, however short the way.

- The first thing we will ask is which fuel you put in and roughly how much — and your receipt says both. Hold on to it.

On the M4, under 25 miles from Rode, the next exit is the place to come off; anywhere, the first safe spot to stop. Do not press on to the services. Then go back to step one.

## The fork in each Rode fuel drain: has it run yet?

What happens after this turns on one answer, and just one.

Engine never run at all?

- That petrol is still inside your tank and nowhere else.

- Usually it is emptied and flushed just where the vehicle stands.

- No position is better, and it's why the first step matters so much.

If the motor has run, even briefly:

- Petrol has been drawn out of that tank, through your filter then into your lines.

- Your high-pressure pump and the injectors get it on a longer run.

- Flushing the lines, your filter sorted, occasionally more: this job expands as the miles does.

The reason the line falls there: diesel protects the high-pressure fuel pump as well as your injectors as it passes through them, and petrol does not.

A tank of petrol, left alone, damages nothing.

The components that move it are grinding the moment petrol is being pumped.

## Before you call about petrol in a diesel around Rode: what we need

A little planning is the difference between a technician that finds you and a technician that circles.

- Your whereabouts: a postcode beginning BA11 6 serves best.

- The street or the car park. A road name is a help — Marsh Road, or wherever you have stopped.

- Car parks are found most easily by what they serve: tell us the one outside Co-op Food, and it's simple.

- The make and model of the car, and the fact it is a diesel.

- What went in. Petrol, or AdBlue. AdBlue is a separate job with its own page for Rode, so tell us which.

- How long the nozzle was in, or the litres on the receipt — either gives us how much.

- The distance it covered, and how hard, if it ran at all.

- Whose car it is. Some hire and company agreements want the owner to approve this work, and that's easier settled before our technicians get there than after.

Call 0333 366 0103 next. Email is fine too if it can wait, with the vehicle left at home, going nowhere.

## The wait for a Rode fuel drain, and what to do in it

In the wait, the harm comes from kindly meant help — which is why these matter.

- Safety before the vehicle. If it has stopped somewhere exposed, get yourself clear of the traffic and wait away from it. If it is safe where it is, wait with it.

- Not to roll it a couple of yards, not to check it is all right, not as a passer-by's favour: no one starts it.

- No additives. Two-stroke oil, injector cleaner, something from the boot — none of that takes the petrol back out.

- Emptying it yourself is not the answer: a can of siphoned petrol on a verge is a danger, and your fuel beyond your tank stays put all the same.

- Not for your radio, not for the windows: your ignition stays off.

## Van arrived? Your fuel drain, one step at a time

- Three questions. What went in, how much, and whether it has run. Those answers set the job, which is why the quote comes after them and not before.

- Out of your tank comes the tainted mixture: your tank is cleared.

- Petrol that has moved beyond your tank travels in the lines if it ran, and the lines are cleaned to shift it.

- Where the vehicle has a usable filter, it's replaced; if not, cleared.

- Priming follows after fresh diesel is in.

- The first start on new diesel. When bleeding is finished, the motor is fired up and we make sure that it runs properly.

Our engineers stay until it's running on fresh diesel.

The car returns to normal driving right away, and lasting damage is very uncommon if it has been caught early.

## After your fuel drain: back on the road around Rode

- Drive normally. There's nothing special to do after it's been started on clean fuel.

- Watch the first miles. A warning light, smoke, a rough idle or a flat spot under the throttle means pull over then ring us back.

- An insurer, a fleet manager or a hire company may ask what was carried out, so keep your paperwork.

- Next time, trust the pump's label rather than the colour of its handle.
