# The Next Steps, in Order: Petrol in a Diesel Car in Roedean

Whatever you do, never switch your engine on, even for a moment, to move it. Pause; leave the vehicle off.

Emptied and rinsed, right where it sits: that is normally all an unrun diesel with petrol in it takes. Whether it stays that simple rests on the minutes ahead more than on everything else.

What follows is the sequence from here, anywhere in Roedean you are.

## Petrol in a diesel, motor off — the first minute

Go through the following in order, before you do anything else.

- Ignition off, keys out. Turned on, your ignition can prime your system — and priming is what moves petrol out of your tank towards the parts it harms.

- A fuller tank of the same mix is all topping up gives you, since it removes nothing. So no more diesel.

- Hazards on. If you're anywhere close to moving traffic, make the vehicle easy to see before you do anything else.

- Off the petrol pump by hand. On a forecourt, ask the staff to help you roll it away from the pump. Don't start the car to shift it, however short the way.

- Hold on to the receipt: the grade and roughly how much are written on it, and they are what our engineers ask for first.

Realised on the move? Get off at the next exit if you're on the M23, under 25 miles from Roedean, and pull over somewhere safe — not at the services further on. Step one starts after that.

## Has it run yet? The fork in each Roedean fuel drain

What comes after this turns on one answer, and only one.

If the motor has not run at all:

- Only the tank has petrol in it for now.

- Draining and flushing, on the spot, is normally the whole job.

- This is as good as it gets — which is the whole point of stage one.

If your motor has run, even for a moment:

- Some petrol has left the tank already, passed through the fuel filter, and reached the fuel lines.

- On a longer run it has reached the high-pressure pump as well as your injectors.

- The job grows with the distance — lines flushed, filter dealt with, sometimes more.

Why the line falls there: diesel lubricates the high-pressure fuel pump and your injectors as it flows through them, and petrol doesn't.

Nothing is harmed by petrol that's just resting in a tank.

The components that move it are grinding the moment petrol is being pumped.

## Roedean, petrol in a diesel: have these prepared before you call

Prepare a little, and the technician finds you instead of circling.

- BN2 5 and the remainder of the postcode makes the ideal way to begin telling us where you are.

- Wherever you have parked, the road's name is useful — whether that's Marine Drive or somewhere else — and so does the name of a car park.

- Car parks are located more easily by what they serve: tell us the one at Asda, and it is straightforward.

- The car. Make, model, plus that it's a diesel.

- Which went in counts: AdBlue is a separate job from petrol, and Roedean has a page just for that. So tell us.

- How long the nozzle was in, or the litres from the receipt — whichever tells us how much.

- Has it run? If so, tell us how far it got, and how it was driven.

- Settle who owns your car ahead of when our engineers arrive: some hire or company agreements want the owner to approve the work, and that is faster beforehand.

Phone 0333 366 0103 then. Writing to is fine as well if it can wait, with the car parked at home, going nowhere.

## Waiting for a fuel drain in Roedean: what to do

During the wait, the damage comes from kindly meant help — which is why these matter.

- Wait with your car if it's safe where it is — but if it has stopped somewhere unsafe, you come first: away from the traffic, waiting apart from it.

- Not to roll it a couple of yards, not to check it is all right, not for a passer-by's favour: nobody starts it.

- Additives stay in your boot. Injector cleaner and two-stroke oil draw none of the petrol out again.

- Siphoning petrol into a can at the kerbside is hazardous — and it also leaves whatever fuel has already gone beyond that tank. Do not try a home-made drain.

- Keep your ignition off — the windows and the radio included.

## Step by step: the fuel drain when the van gets there

- Three queries. What was put in, how much, and whether it has run. The replies decide the job, which is why the quote comes after them and not before.

- Out of the tank comes the polluted blend: the tank is drained.

- The fuel lines are cleaned. If it ran, that petrol has shifted beyond that tank, and the fuel lines are carrying it.

- The filter is sorted. Cleared, or replaced where the car has a workable one.

- The fuel system is primed on clean diesel.

- The start-up. With clean diesel in and your system primed, it's started and checked to be sure it runs smoothly.

Only when it is running on new diesel do our technicians head off.

It's very unusual for a vehicle spotted early to be left with lasting damage, and normal use resumes straight away.

## Back on the road around Roedean after the fuel drain

- Drive normally. There's nothing unusual to do after it has been started on fresh fuel.

- The first miles are the test. A warning lamp, exhaust smoke, a rough idle or a hesitant throttle is your signal to stop then call us again.

- Keep your documents. A hire company, a fleet manager or an insurer may ask what was done.

- Next time, read the pump. The label, not the colour of its handle.

If you are near a border or somewhere hard to explain, ring and ask rather than assuming.

## Petrol in a diesel across East Sussex? Leave it off then ring

Stage one is the whole of that: motor off, keys out, receipt in your pocket. From there Petrol in Diesel takes over, on the forecourt, at the kerbside or on your driveway.
