# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Romford?

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled vehicles where they stand, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, throughout Romford and the remainder of Greater London. The first thing to do is not to fire up your engine. When your engine has not been started and the fuel is still sitting in that tank, a tank drain is nearly always all it needs, and the following few minutes decide that, not how much got in.

Our technicians will explain what your next step will be. Ring us — it happens before everything else.

## What next? Petrol in a diesel, step by step

- Never start it. Turned on regardless? Then never trust it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle typically won't run, so the person stops and the harm ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It moves off happily, for a few miles. Motorists get that confused. It is not fine — your fuel system is grinding every mile you do.

- Leave the car's ignition off too. Diesel does two jobs: it combusts, and before it ignites it protects the high-pressure fuel pump and those injectors. Petrol manages the first but not the second. Flicking the car's ignition on is frequently sufficient to prime your system, which pulls the petrol out of that tank and into just those components.

- That advice presumes a diesel fuel system copes with petrol by percentage. It doesn't. Tip diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you get is a fuller tank of the same blend. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.

- A car that hasn't moved is the quickest one to sort out, so wait where you are if you sensibly can. Pulled up on the verge on A118? Hazards on, and keep the vehicle there. A difficult location works for us better than a started diesel.

- Keep your location ready before you phone. A postcode starting RM1 3 and whatever is closest to you with a label on it is the difference between our van turning up and the van circling.

- What was put in, approximately how many litres, and also whether the car has run — those three facts shape the entire visit. Dial 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Quarter past eight, a quick fill-up on the road in, and it dawns on you at about eleven — by then the diesel BMW 3 Series has been standing outside the nearest station for three hours. Phone us then keep the car precisely where it stands. The drive in is the part that matters most, as diesel has two tasks on its way through an engine: it burns, and before it combusts it protects that high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors. Petrol manages the first and not the second. So those few miles were travelled with your pump running on a fuel that had given up a lot of the protection it is built around — which is why the thing our technicians ask is how many miles you drove, not how long the motor has been stood.

## Can petrol be taken out of a diesel at the forecourt?

A large share of this work ends up finished at the pump, since that's where it mostly kicks off.

Still at Esso? Then that's usually where it happens. Garage forecourts are everyday for us, with the permission of the station.

No place but the forecourt can it be halted with the motor still unstarted.

Our engineers can still deal with it where it is, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, the vehicle has been switched on and moved there, and that pulled fuel through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump, right from your tank. None of that is a calamity, but the flush then has to reach past the tank to the fuel lines and your filter, and the few seconds between reading the till receipt and reaching for your key are what determine that.

Away from the petrol pump, the next customer can get by — so yes, let the attendants help you wheel it. Well worth doing.

Four vehicle lengths is not worth the risk.

The complicated part is that bay, not your fuel. Vehicles either side of you, a trolley shelter behind, and now and then a height bar on the way in that settles whether a technician can reach you at all — so when you ring from a car park like the one outside Asda, mention how much clearance there's around you and which way round your car is. Those we cover frequently. Should there be no room to work alongside your diesel Peugeot 308, it gets shifted with the motor off, and not out of pedantry over a handful of seconds of running: priming takes place at every start, more of that mixture departs the tank for your pump, and two shunts into a roomier space have quietly made a worse job of what was merely a motor standing still.

## Places our team reach around Romford

These same trips carry us to Gidea Park, Rush Green, Rise Park, Gallows Corner and Ardleigh Green besides Romford, which is a small village.

If yours is not on the list that does not mean we don't come — there are dedicated pages for the majority of towns around Greater London, and the ones named above are merely the closest neighbours.

Near a boundary, or anywhere your satnav misreads? Call us and check rather than presuming.

This map marks the patch this page spans.

Every bit of it is ground we cover: a kerbside, a forecourt, a driveway, a car park. You never move your vehicle anywhere.

## Stopped by the roadside anywhere around Romford?

The chance to stop somewhere suitable does not come to everybody.

Set off, then realised? Ended up along the verge beside Mercury Gardens, or parked in some lay-by with the hazards going? That's a common call here. Not an unusual one.

Okay right there? Sit by it. Not safe? Move out and clear of it.

It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that's the catch: fire it up to reach somewhere safer and that mix goes further into the system with every mile travelled.

A technician heading to a difficult spot is no trouble for us, and it is much better for the vehicle than pressing on.

The parts that should be getting lubricated are wearing instead, and your vehicle gives no sign of it: a diesel on a diluted tank fires up and drives off quite happily. Try the trip home from The Golden Lion? No. Phone us and leave the Mercedes C-Class where it stands.

## A few miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?

Here is where the local M25 comes in, under 5 miles from Romford.

A drop in power, a rough idle, some smoke: those are the symptoms when they arrive, instead of a clean stop — and a misfuelled diesel will usually get you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong at all.

Never restart it to move it. Come off at the next safe exit and turn off.

Long drive? Anything approaching the under 15 miles to the closest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it arrived at by the contamination. Say that on the call, since it alters what goes in our van.

Nothing gets worse whilst it waits. Whatever the diesel Dacia Duster did on the way to Coronation Gardens, it is doing none of that now: the pump isn't turning. So take your time — but never drive the car home to buy yourself any.

## Romford itself

Romford is a locality in northeast Greater London, situated on the River Rom at an elevation of around 26 metres. Romford lies approximately 14 miles from central London and is close to nearby places such as Gidea Park and Rush Green. Romford is characterised by a high proportion of flat dwellings, reflecting its urban setting. Romford forms part of the wider London urban area, with a population of around 3803 residents.

## What we do when our engineers arrive with you in Romford

- The responses shape the work, which is why our engineers ask before giving a price: what went in, how much of that, and whether the motor has run.

- Away flows the tainted mixture.

- Fuel lines are rinsed through and the fuel filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the fuel system that caused any of this.

- Priming follows, once clean diesel is in.

- The engine is started and checked to make sure it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

The vehicle is then ready for you to pull away.

All of this is done where the car is, so it never has to go to a garage, and when it has been noticed early, permanent damage is very uncommon.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank instead, around Romford?

If what went in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the opening step is unchanged — never start the vehicle — yet this fault is not.

Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and removes the protection your fuel system relies on.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus deposits.

Both are ours. There is a separate Romford page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

Hire car? Company car? Ring them before us. Some contracts want the firm to approve the work, and that's much faster dealt with up front than afterwards. Then ring us about the Volvo XC60, the diesel one, by Romford Central Library. Do not worry that you can't say how full your tank was — almost nobody can two days into a motor, and it is something we check on site. The reason for asking: harm from petrol in a diesel is a matter of share. A few litres in a nearly empty tank make a far stronger blend than in a full one, and petrol is built to resist the very thing a diesel needs of that, which is igniting when compressed. Stronger mix, more knocking, more smoke, flatter throttle.

## Paying for a petrol-in-diesel drain in Romford

We can't put one number on this page honestly, because the job is not one job. What shifts it:

- Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.

- Wrong fuel in, against what that tank holds — that ratio.

- Which went in: petrol or AdBlue.

- Where your car is, and whether our van can sensibly reach and work on it.

Tell us your vehicle, the quantity and if it has run, and you'll get a straight answer instead of a range.

For the car at home that's going nowhere and isn't urgent, is fine too.

## Petrol in diesel questions from Romford motorists

## At a petrol station in Romford, can you do a fuel drain there?

Yes — forecourts are where a big share of this gets done.

Agreement from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Sainsbury's is somewhere we are often enough, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you'll hear if working there's possible.

## A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Proportion decides it instead of litres — and more than either, whether the motor has run.

Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is needed is if that mixture has been pulled through the fuel system.

## I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that.

It is fixable a lot more often than people assume, even though driving is what takes the problem from the tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A drain then flush carried out correctly isn't an alteration and doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty.

What's likelier to start a dispute is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the engine to stay off.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

Two-stroke oil solves a distinct problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol thinned. No.

After that? Still petrol in that tank, and a pump that has to cope with the stuff.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

You don't need one. Your car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a franchised dealer.

## Still with your car?

Keep the engine shut off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, switch off, and no restarting it later.

Cold and parked, a motor is in the best place available — and drivers fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.

Call-out fuel draining in Romford and across Greater London — at the roadside, on the forecourt or at home.
