# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Rothney?

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled cars where they stand, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, all over Rothney and the rest of Aberdeenshire. The first thing to do is not to turn on the engine. When the motor has not yet run and the petrol is still sitting in that tank, a drain is nearly always all it requires, and the following few minutes decide that, not how much was put in.

Ring us before all else begins, and you will hear what comes after that.

## The first five steps: petrol in a diesel

- Don't fire it up — and don't depend on it when it does start. Here is the bit drivers have wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol engine given diesel usually just will not run, and so the driver stops and the harm halts with them. A diesel fed petrol typically starts, idles and moves off just fine for a couple of miles. It's not fine. It's eating into your fuel system whenever you drive.

- Leave the car's ignition alone also. Diesel performs two roles: it ignites, and before it combusts it greases the high-pressure pump and those injectors. Petrol handles the first and not the second. Turning the ignition on is frequently sufficient to prime the system, which draws that petrol out of the tank and into precisely those parts.

- Don't put diesel on top to dilute it. A diesel fuel system won't tolerate petrol by percentage the way that advice suggests, and topping up clears nothing — it merely hands you a bigger tank of the same mix. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.

- Wait where you are if you sensibly can. A vehicle that has not shifted is the quickest one to handle, and we'd sooner get to an odd place than have it started. If you're stopped on the verge on Beechcroft Gardens, put your hazards on and leave the car there.

- The van showing up instead of circling rests on two things: a postcode that starts AB52 6, and whatever is nearest to you with a label on it. Have both ready before you phone.

- Phone 0333 366 0103. Anticipate three questions — what went in, approximately how many litres, plus if the engine has been turned over. Your replies decide everything that follows.

## On a forecourt: clearing petrol from your diesel

Forecourts are where this job often starts, and where a good portion of it ends.

If you're still at the forecourt at the nearest petrol station, that's typically where this drain gets done — we work on garage forecourts all the time, with the site's agreement.

No place except the forecourt can this be spotted with your motor still cold.

Everywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was fired up and driven to get there, which means fuel was sucked from your tank, through your filter then into the high-pressure pump. That is not a calamity, and our technicians can still deal with it where it stands. It does mean your lines and your filter need flushing as well as your tank, and that's decided by the few seconds between checking the till receipt and reaching for your key.

Move the car out of the way if the staff suggest it, and they generally will. The next driver gets by the pump, and that's worth doing.

Rolling the car four lengths does not justify firing it.

Diesel BMW 3 Series. A couple of litres of unleaded. Driven a couple of miles. Switched off now, at Co-op Food. That is the call we hope for, as the question underneath it is about quantity through your pump not hours on the clock.

## Coverage near Rothney

These same journeys bring us to Insch, Ardoyne, Knockenbaird, Kirkton and Auchleven along with Rothney, which is a small village.

Our technicians do come. Those places above are merely the immediate neighbours, and a page is there for most locations in Aberdeenshire, and so an absence from the list is not an absence from the coverage.

Assuming is the habit to resist, particularly on a border or somewhere the satnav fails. Call us and enquire.

Use the map for the ground included here.

Kerbside, forecourt, private drive, car park: all of that is ground we serve, and none of that asks your vehicle to come to us.

Put diesel in a petrol car and mostly it won't run, and so the motorist stops there and the harm stops with them. Swap it — petrol into a diesel — and the engine fires up, idles and drives off as though nothing had happened, while your high-pressure pump works without the lubrication the fuel is meant to be supplying. That's the trap, and it's why your diesel Mercedes C-Class will have felt perfectly usual coming back from the local primary school. They always do. From the driver's seat there's nothing to caution you about, so nothing warns you. Call us with approximately how far you drove, and how hard; the second one matters more than the first.

## Kerbside call-outs in Rothney

Not everyone gets the chance to pull over anywhere sensible.

If you realised after setting off and landed along the verge beside Mayfield Gardens, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazards going, that is a normal call for us rather than an odd one.

Stay beside your car if it's sensible to sit inside, but out of the vehicle if it isn't.

It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that's the trouble: start it up to get to somewhere better and the mixture goes further into the system with every mile driven.

We'll take our van to a difficult location without any fuss, and for the car that's much better than carrying on.

It will start. It will drive off perfectly well. That's the trouble, as a diesel on a diluted tank runs generally while wearing down the parts its fuel should be protecting. So no, do not risk the trip home from The Commercial Hotel — leave the Ford Kuga and call us.

## A few miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?

Your M90 is the one that counts here, and runs over 50 miles from Rothney.

Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently manage both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is rarely a neat stop. Power ebbs away, the idle goes rough, and there may be smoke.

Take the next junction that's sensible, pull up there, and do not start the car to move it.

On a longer run — anything close to the under 25 miles to the nearest city — take it the petrol has been through your filter, your pump and the fuel injectors, and tell us when you ring. It changes what our technicians bring.

## Rothney itself

Rothney is a small locality in Aberdeenshire, situated on the riverside at an elevation of 128 metres. Rothney lies near the towns of Insch and Ardoyne, and is approximately 23 miles from Aberdeen. Rothney has a population of around 675 people, with predominantly detached housing. Rothney is also close to the small settlement of Knockenbaird.

## Our job around Rothney, step by step

- Three things get established before any price — your fuel that was put in, the amount, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.

- The tainted fuel is drawn out of your tank.

- Lines purged, filter cleaned. Whatever remains later isn't the thing that started the trouble.

- Our engineers pour fresh diesel in and prime your system.

- It's started with new diesel in it, and our technicians make sure that it is running correctly.

That has the car ready to drive away.

All of it is done where the car is, so it never has to be taken to a garage, and when it has been caught soon, permanent damage is very unusual.

Ringing from close to Premnay War Memorial? Three things help us. The filler — which side of the vehicle it's on. Room for a van beside you, without the road being blocked. And if anything has run since the fill-up. The spot itself scarcely counts: on-street is where our technicians work most, and we would far rather have a cramped spot than a motor someone has driven somewhere easier. Then it's a drain for the Audi Q5, a filter change where there is one worth changing, lines purged, clean fuel put round the entire circuit. By now the worst of that is in the lines and not the tank.

## A different job: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Rothney

Do not start it: that opening rule holds whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is this problem itself.

The protection a fuel system relies on is stripped away by petrol, which weakens your diesel.

Rust and residue are what a diesel tank gets instead, as AdBlue is urea in water.

Usually the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the full story lives on its own Rothney page. Both are ours to deal with.

## What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain costs in Rothney

One price wouldn't be fair here, because this is not one job. These are the things that change it:

- Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.

- Wrong fuel in, against what that tank takes — that ratio.

- AdBlue or petrol, whichever was put in.

- Where the vehicle is, and if our van can safely get to and work on it.

A firm answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: the vehicle, the amount, and whether it has run.

Not urgent, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then does this job.

What happens next is the issue. Your engine at once draws the petrol still resting in the filter and the feed lines back round through the pump a second time, because draining a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Drain it and put clean diesel in, somebody confident will tell you — and that advice is only half right, as do it to a diesel Peugeot 2008 parked up, insch War Memorial say, and the thing starts, which is what makes it sound reasonable. Call us instead. Our technicians flush your system and take the fuel filter off where the car has a workable one, and that's the difference between the vehicle being fixed and the car only starting.

## Petrol in diesel questions from Rothney motorists

## I am on a forecourt around Rothney. Can you drain the car on the spot?

Plenty of what our engineers do takes place nowhere else. So yes.

Tell us which one you are at when you call and we will tell you if we can work there. With the station's agreement we attend another forecourt nearby and the other forecourts nearby routinely.

## Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?

It rests on the ratio instead of the litres, and a lot more on whether the engine has run.

Five litres into a nearly dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mix been drawn right through, or has it not?

## I put petrol in my diesel and drove the car. Now what?

Turn off somewhere sensible, and keep it that way after you stop.

Driving is what moves the problem from that tank into the pump and injectors — but it's salvageable much more commonly than people fear, and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart the vehicle.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A drain then flush carried out properly is not a modification and does not void a manufacturer's warranty.

An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a distinct problem and it does not restore what petrol has weakened.

Later? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to put up with the stuff.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

There is no need to bring it to a main dealer, as our technicians drain and clean your car wherever it is.

## You, and your car, still together?

Do not turn the car back on.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, turn off, and no restarting the car later.

Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that's the best position to be in. Motorists fear this far more than they need to.

Call-out fuel draining in Rothney and across Aberdeenshire — at the kerbside, on the forecourt or at home.
