# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Rownhams? Don't Start It

With the tank still carrying the fuel and the motor not yet turned over, nearly every job requires only a drain, so leave your engine off. That outcome is settled in the minutes immediately after filling up, and not by the amount that went in. Throughout Rownhams and the rest of Hampshire, Petrol in Diesel drains your car and flushes it where it is, whether by a roadside, on a private drive or at a forecourt.

Ring us and our engineers can tell you what comes next before you do any more.

## Now what? Petrol in a diesel, in order

- Never fire it up — and don't rely on it if it fires up. That is the part most people get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol engine fed diesel normally just won't run, so the motorist stops and the wear stops with them. A diesel given petrol usually starts, ticks over and drives away quite happily for a few miles. It's not all right. It's grinding the fuel system whenever you drive.

- Leave the ignition be also. Diesel does two tasks: it ignites, and before it burns it protects the high-pressure pump and its injectors. Petrol handles the first but not the second. Flicking the car's ignition on is commonly all it takes to prime that system, which pulls that petrol out of the tank and into precisely those components.

- Never thin it. Diesel tipped on top removes nothing, and so all you have is more of what was already there, since percentage is not how a diesel fuel system accepts petrol. Super unleaded? Simply petrol. The octane makes no difference.

- A vehicle that hasn't shifted is the quickest one to handle, so stay where you are if you sensibly can. Stopped on the verge on Horns Drove? Hazards on, then leave it there. An awkward location suits us better than a started diesel.

- Before you ring, have your location. Anything next to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode starting SO16 8 — that is what determines whether our van arrives or circles.

- Dial 0333 366 0103. Say what was put in, roughly how much, and whether the engine has fired. Those three facts settle the full visit.

Don't drive it home. Petrol-thinned diesel has run through your high-pressure fuel pump in real volume on the trip in, and the trip back would about double that for nothing at all. Phone us — the platform is fine. There's no need to stand over your Renault Megane at Redbridge while the work goes on, and our team would very much rather hear from you tonight than find out on Monday.

## Removing petrol from a diesel on a forecourt

A big share of the job gets finished at a forecourt, as that's where it mostly begins.

We operate on petrol station forecourts regularly, with the owner's agreement, so if you are still at BP that is usually where this drain takes place.

Nowhere other than a garage can it be caught with your motor still untouched.

Anywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and driven to get there, which means fuel was sucked from that tank, through your filter then into the high-pressure pump. That's not a calamity, and our technicians can still sort it out where it stands. It does mean the fuel lines and the fuel filter need rinsing as well as that tank, and that's settled by the few seconds between checking the receipt and going for the keys.

Push the car out of the way if the attendants offer, and they normally will. The next motorist gets through the petrol pump, and that is worth doing.

Shifting the car four bays does not justify cranking it.

## Parts our team cover in Rownhams

The same journeys bring us to Nursling, Lords Hill, Upton, Toothill and Lordswood along with Rownhams, which is a coastal village.

Our engineers do come. Those names above are just the closest neighbours, and a page exists for most places around Hampshire, and so an absence from the list isn't an absence from the coverage.

On a boundary, or somewhere your phone can't find? Contact us to enquire instead of presuming.

The patch the page spans sits on this map.

Roadside, forecourt, private drive, car park: every bit of it is ground our technicians work on, and none of that asks your vehicle to move to us.

## Rownhams: stranded wherever you pulled up

Not everybody finds a sensible place to pull in.

A routine call for us rather than a rare one: realised after setting off, finished up along the verge on Balmoral Way or in a lay-by with the hazards going.

Whether you sit by your car or step away from it depends on whether sitting nearby seems sensible.

It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that's the catch: restart the vehicle to get to somewhere handier and that mix goes further into the fuel system with every mile covered.

Pressing on causes the vehicle far more harm than a van driving out to a tricky place, and that's no trouble for us.

## Driven it already? Pull over, then read this

under a mile out of Rownhams, your M27 is what counts now.

Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently do both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is rarely a clean stop. Power drains away, the idle goes rough, and there may be smoke.

Do not start it to move it. Get off at the first sensible junction then turn off.

On a longer run — anything near the under 5 miles to the nearest city — take it the mixture has been through the filter, the pump and the fuel injectors, and say so when you call. It alters what our technicians bring.

Nothing is getting worse whilst it waits. Whatever the diesel Audi A4 did on the way to Aldermoor Copse, it is doing none of that now: your pump isn't turning. So take your time — but don't drive the car home to buy yourself any.

## Where is Rownhams?

Rownhams is a small village in Hampshire, situated near the coast and approximately 3.9 miles from Southampton. Rownhams lies at an elevation of around 68 metres, with detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation in the area. Rownhams is close to nearby places such as Nursling, Lords Hill, and Upton, and is within commuting distance of London, being around 69 miles away.

## Our job around Rownhams, step by step

- The replies change the work, which is why we ask before giving a price: what got in, how much of that, and if the motor has run.

- Out flows the tainted mixture.

- What is remaining in your system should not be what started the issue, so the lines get cleaned and the fuel filter cleaned.

- Your system gets primed, on clean diesel.

- The motor is started and checked to be sure it runs properly on fresh diesel.

From there, you're ready to pull away.

Permanent damage is very uncommon when it has been spotted quickly, and since everything is done where the car is, it never has to be taken to a garage.

About as well as this goes, once your engine has turned: away from the pumps, receipt read, and your diesel BMW 1 Series left by St John's, Rownhams scarcely two streets on. Call us, then leave the car off. A short drive does really help. It was still a start and still a drive, though, and so the filter and the pump have had weakened fuel through them — hence cleaning your lines instead of only draining the tank.

## A separate job: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Rownhams

Do not start it: that first step applies whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is the problem itself.

Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and strips out the lubrication the fuel system depends on.

Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that leads to corrosion and residue.

Both are ours. There is a separate Rownhams page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

Rattling? Uneven idle? White smoke, throttle gone limp? That's your misfilled Vauxhall Astra, a diesel, saying what is wrong with it. Stop wherever you happen to be, perhaps by St Johns Church Hall, and leave the restarting alone.

## How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Rownhams?

What shifts the price is listed below, since the job isn't one job and our technicians can't frankly put a single number on this page.

- Whether your motor has been started or driven. This is the big one.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.

- The kind of liquid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where your car is, and if a technician can safely get to and work on it.

A firm answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: the car, the quantity, and if it has run.

If it is not pressing — the car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Your filter, your lines, the pump and the rail: that's where that blend is once a diesel has run, and it doesn't come back out with your tank contents. So the tank isn't where most of the problem waits by this point, and a diesel Peugeot 208 that made it by Zoe Braithwaite Centre needs the circuit purged rather than drained.

## Rownhams drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

## Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Rownhams?

Yes — forecourts are where a fair part of this gets done.

Often, provided the site agrees: Sainsbury's, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether our engineers can work in that place is something our technicians answer straight away.

## How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Litres aren't the yardstick. Proportion is, and far more than either, it counts whether anything has been run.

An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct scenarios, of course. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is if the system has had that blend pulled through it.

## Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What then?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that.

Driving moves the issue along — out of that tank, into your pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one genuinely valuable thing left to you isn't restarting it.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain and flush done to a good standard, which is no modification at all.

What is likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for your engine to remain off.

## Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a separate problem and it does not put back what petrol has weakened.

Petrol stays in that tank after that, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no break from it.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Wherever the car is, we drain and flush it there, so a visit to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

## Still with the car?

Your engine stays off.

If you have already driven the vehicle, stop somewhere safe, turn it off and keep it off.

Cold and stationary, a vehicle is in the best place available — and motorists fear this much more than the recovery rate warrants.

Across Hampshire and in Rownhams: call-out fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the roadside.
